3250 v. 3255 Ordinary Differential Equations

I am a frosh who exempted out of the calc sequence and took linear algebra this semester. I am considering majoring in physics and/or math and thus considering taking 3250 or 3255 in the spring. I know 3255 is the physics ORD class. Does this class also fulfull the ORD requirement for math majors? How is professor Kriete compared to professor Lasiecka? Is the ORD class primarily numbers or proof based? Thanks for help!

It gets a little confusing when family members share an account/username. It appears that there is a parent, and a younger sibling that also post under this username. It might be a good idea for everyone to get their own accounts.

Ok will do. Do you have any insight into 3255 v. 3250?

Here is the low down.

Kriete vs. Lasiecka

Both professors are great. I had Kriete for MATH 3250 and Lasiecka for MATH 3310.
Both make their tests an appropriate level of difficulty, lecture effectively and answer questions well.

The differences are that Laesicka is much quieter and has an accent. Unless you get to front of the class you won’t be able to hear her. She is also much more apparent about what she wants you to know. She makes review sheets and holds reviews before her tests. This is great and all but does affect the curve. In MATH 3310 an A was a 95 =( . If you are satisfied with your grade at the end, the final may be optional (that was the case for MATH 3310 when I took it).

Now for Kriete. Kriete will assign more homework than Laesicka and be less obvious about what he wants from you. Kriete will take a very applied approach to Diff Eq and you will use his book that is in development (will be less expensive than Laesicka’s). On top of HW Kriete will only have “3 quizzes” and a mandatory final exam (Laesicka will likely have quizzes weekly or bi-monthly). Kriete does give 1 take home problem for each quiz and two for the final.

Bottomline: Can’t go wrong with either choice but if you want a more applied approach take Kriete’s.

Thanks 110percentwahoo, I am going to go with Kriete.
