365 days. So many birthday stories to tell.

Happy birthday to me! * November 17th. Haha.

*I thought it might be fun to have a thread where we could post something on our birthday. *This could be an interesting story surrounding our birth, a birthday story or a recognition of a " milestone".
I thought of this today because my D1 told me she was spending Sunday (tomorrow) volunteering on Staten Island (SI) to help Sandy victims. *

Many years ago, a young family lived on SI near a beach. *It was a bungalow owned by one of the in-laws. *They were living there while they were building their dream home on a hill on SI that had a lighthouse that guided ships into the NYC harbor. *A large storm came ( hurricane Barbara?) and flooded their whole area, including their bungalow. *The mother of the young family was pregnant. * The family was rescued by boat. *Mom and her three young children and baby in belly. *Not sure about Dad. *Was he at work or also rescued?

I was baby in belly. *I have heard the story many times. *But I forget the details. *Dad died 20+ years ago and Mom a year+ year ago. *Details didn’t seem to matter then. *The rescue was supposedly featured, or a picture, in the local paper, The SI Advance.

So a baby in the belly being rescued because of a flood had a child going back to the same place to help victims of a flood many, many years later. *The baby , me, left NYC and lived all over the country. *I ended up in upstate NY. My D1 was not raised in SI or other *parts of NYC.

So, anyone else’s birthday? *Happy B-day. *Anyone with tomorrows birthday want to
post tomorrow? *

My birthday is Monday. I’ll spend the time between now and then trying to think of a good story!!

That’s a nice story, morrismm, but what’s with all the asterisks?

Happy birthday! :)

I kept looking for the corresponding footnotes.

Haha. I wrote it on iPad notebook. That is how it pasted. Didn’t notice until you pointed it out . Sorry.

I thought maybe you had been imbibing on your birthday, and those were hiccups…

Well, I am enjoying a bit of merlot. But those were not my astericks. They belong to apple. My asterisks are a lot… Well you know!

“My birthday is Monday. I’ll spend the time between now and then trying to think of a good story!!”

Mine too, but I doubt I’ll be able to think of anything post worthy. :(

Both my parents birthdays were this past week.
For years I had a hard time remembering which one came first . (They are one day apart)

Morrism, I’m currently using my phone to post but usually use the iPad. You may want to check your default font.

Happy birthday, emilybee!!

DH and S1 have birthdays later this month, three days apart. After 26 years I still have to stop and think about which is which. DS is coming home early so he can squeeze in one last visit to the dentist and eye doc before he loses our insurance and has only his crappy grad student coverage.

Well, my birthday is tomorrow, so here’s one not very exciting story. I may remember others.

My birthday is November 19 and Prince Charles’ birthday is November 15. He and I were born the same year. Every year when I was a kid and I started to get excited that my birthday was coming, I would hear on the radio and TV that Prince Charles was having his birthday. I always thought: (a) It’s not fair that nobody on the radio or TV talks about my birthday, and (b) that Prince Charles and I were destined to be married, since we’re the exact same age. I was very disappointed when he married Diana, even though I had been married for several years when that happened.

I think I look a hell of a lot younger than he does, though.

Happy Birthday, VeryHappy. My mother’s birthday also was November 19.

VH, and Emilybee, my birthday as well! Yes, you do look younger than Prince Charles, VH. Will think of a story later.

Here is the difference between 50 and 60 (I am neither). When you are 60 you can be fairly certain your life is more than half over. :D

I had no idea so many important people share my birthday.

Same to you, VeryHappy and to MD Mom’s mom.

And great lakes mom!

Watching the PBS Ken Burns special about the Dust Bowl. My father’s birth (celebrated this week) corresponded with the bank crash in 1929. Son of a tenant farmer on dry farms in Texas, who lived an entire year in a barn or camping along the creek… It took a long time until I understood his childhood and how it shaped his outlook and attitudes.
Thank God for the GI Bill after his service during the Korean War.

Happy birthday great lakes mom, emilybee, and VeryHappy!

Today (as of midnight) is my mother’s birthday, and also my grandmother’s. My grandmother gave birth to my mother on her birthday. I always thought that was pretty cool.

And since I know you’re all waiting for another birthday story from me, here it is:

The year I turned 15 was the year of JFK’s assassination – 11/22/63, which was a Friday. So my birthday had been the previous Tuesday. We were dismissed early from school on the day of the assassination and, as one of my best friends and I were walking out of school, crying, she sobbed, “And we were going to have a surprise party for you!”

To which I thought, “Really??!! Awesome!”

And then I thought, “Oh, damn! And now you won’t?”

My mother had known about the surprise party, and all day Saturday, when of course none of the country was behaving normally, she kept suggesting that I call my friends . . . “See what they’re doing tonight.” I knew about the party, and she knew about the party, but she didn’t know that I knew, or that I knew that she knew.

Long story short, my friends did wind up having the non-surprise party, but it was much lower key than it would have been.

That party was when the person who would become my high school boyfriend started “wooing” me. His birthday, oddly enough, is November 23rd, so every year – 49 years later – he sends me a happy birthday greeting.

Lots of birthday memories, especially from that year.
