dtshen - a usual price to pay for a good tailored suit would be couple hundred pounds, say 200-400? (pounds sterling)

But you can get far cheaper ones which are fairly decent… and you could buy a ready-made cheap one in a shop and get the tailors to do it up for you.

Why the hell does everyone suddenly want to be buying suits in China?!?!?

never been there. but i’d definitely go shopping and eating. you know it’s damn cheap. but learn how to bargain first, or go with a Chinese friend.

take a tour around the hutong’s, wander around the old non-touristy areas of beijing. talk to chinese people - esp older ones’ stories…they can be fascinating.

don’t stick to beijing. there is so much more to do and see in china!

go to “xiang yang market” if youre in shanghai

remember the 1/3 rule!! aka, if they ask for 100 bux, you tell them 30, and then walk away hastily if they refuse!!~

ps, the maglev is more of a “cool” thing… besides, its only equivelant to 5 usd, so its worth it! its the most high tech train in the world so give it some more credibility instead of criticizing the usefulness

how easy/difficult is it to get from beijing to shanghai? is it expensive, and how long does it take? (i’m assuming most people take the train?). would i have sufficient time to visit shanghai if i took a quick weekend trip?

a plane ride (round trip) would probably be around 1200-1500 yuan (150-200 usd). train on the other hand has several classes, such as hard seat no a/c, hard seat w/ a/c, soft bed, hard bed, cushion seat w/ a/c… etc

id obviously suggest taking the soft bed, but if youre only going for a few days its not worth taking a train, cuz that would be at least half a day squandered (15 hrs about)

so that means forget the train and take a plane. you can take the maglev (magnetic levitation bullet train) later for your train experience

ps, theres probably at least 10 daily flights, since those two are financial/business hubs
