Isn’t Germany’s population imploding because of low birthrate? This mom is very patriotic; she’s already a mother of 13! If the expectant parent was male, would he be getting pats on the back rather than brickbats?
The doctor who performed her IVF should lose his license in my opinion. She is too old to have kids. If she survives the birth, she is basically telling her older kids, that they may have kids to raise. Statistically, she will not be around to raise them.
I’m dreading the empty nest, but not willing to go THIS far. Sheesh!
Maybe she just wants to be sure she has a caregiver in her old age. It reminds me of the time I saw an old old man with a baby on his lap, and I wondered aloud if it was his grandchild or great-grandchild, at which point I was shushed by a woman who told me it was HIS new baby.
Eyemamom, you raise a good point. I guess my first response would be that I’d congratulate this mom, too - if the pregnancy were natural. But it wasn’t. IVF at the age of 65 is what makes this selfish.
It’s no body else’s business. The decision on whether she’s healthy enough to undergo the pregnancy is between her and her doctors. She may not live to see the kids grow up, but men like Billy Joel and I think Jeff Goldblum are having babies in their 60’s and no one says anything but ‘congrats’.
Well the beautiful thing about this parent cafe, is most things arent our business, but fortunately we can exchange opinions on the subjects. I liken that to malpractice to perform IVF on a woman her age. Comparing her situation to older men is apples to oranges. I dont necessarily agree with them having kids either, however, the mothers are young and will probably be around to take care of the kids. In this instance, none of the articles mention a husband, or partner that will help raise the babies. Her oldest child is 43. Im sorry, its time to stop.
I don’t have a firm opinion on this, so am curious what others think:
Let’s say this woman comes from a family where people routinely live into their 90’s and stay mobile/sharp until the end (let’s just say that was the case with her parents and grandparents). If that were the case, would that change anyone’s opinion?
Presumably she’s using donor ‘ingredients’, same as a 30 year IVF mother might. So if the ‘ingredients’ for the buns are good, does the age of the ‘oven’ have a big bearing on the health of the baby?
Again, why do men who father babies in their 60’s get such hearty congratulations? Statistically, they die younger than women.
I am normally a “their body, their choice” person. HOWEVER, this isn’t just about her body- it’s about the four she’s carrying.
I wouldn’t congratulate a 65 year old dad, either. Our bodies limit fertility ages for a reason IMO and I’m not a fan of screwing with nature quite that much.
I am struggling mightily with the looming empty nest, but four babies is way beyond what I would ever do. The puppy in my avatar is my protest against empty nest. I hope I don’t sound evil, but better her than me.
Who says they get such hearty congratulations? I think it’s kind of gross, especially if the mother is the same age as the guy’s other children. Plus, I think it’s pretty selfish to father a child when there’s a good chance you won’t be around (or healthy) enough to raise him.
This woman already has 13 children ranging in age from 43 to 9. To have four more (if they all survive) suggests some kind of compulsion disorder IMHO.
Crazy for anyone (male or female) to have children in their 60s, IMO. I’m ready for grandchildren - love 'em, spoil 'em and give 'em back. There is no way at 50 that I would have the energy for one baby, let alone four.
