Other old celebrity dads: Steve Martin - 67. Robert De Niro - 68. Clint Eastwood - 66 when his daughter was born.
As long as there is someone competent to raise the child, if men can have children at advanced ages, then the media shouldn’t criticize this woman. Actually, before having children at any age, a person should have a competent ‘back up’ parent. People die at 25 too.
The older celebrity dads have the dough to hire help and get the best care if some thing happens to them or their kids or wife. People die at 25 but not as likely as people die at 60.
Carrying quadruplets would be considered a high risk pregnancy even for a 25 year old woman. In this case, the risks to mother and babies are considerably higher.
Please don’t make this into an abortion argument, m2ck.
My views do not contradict. I’m 100% pro choice but IF you choose to carry the fetus to term, that is when I become concerned about the quality of life that the child will have post birth.
Unlike many anti choice people, I actually give a crap about the being after the cord is cut.
I think she’s crazy. Shades of octomom in there. As for those older men who become Dads, they’re crazy too! Imagine chasing after a toddler while you’re recovering from hip replacement surgery.
I know I’m being judgmental but it seriously seems nutty to me, especially since all those men have older children from their starter wives, I mean from earlier relationships. What happened to Billy Joel’s adorable daughter who has Christie Brinkley as a mom? She’s likely given him grandchildren by now.
^Well, I just about spit iced tea all over my keyboard at the visual I got of a 65 year old friend who is just now recovering from hip replacement surgery chasing after a toddler. Please, @greenwitch warn us readers when you’re going to be that funny!
Just last week in the NYT, there was an article about how Sex Education in Europe is turning towards encouraging more births. Germany has one of the lowest birthrates in the developed world. Here’s a woman who is creating 17 future potential taxpayers.
If her family is willing to raise the new kids once she’s gone, plus generous social benefits from the German gov’t, does that change things?
I had a hard enough time chasing a toddler around in my 30s. Can’t imagine it even now in my 40s. But the double standard applied to male vs female autumn parents rubs me the wrong way.
I’m not sure where I see the double standard. My brother had his last kid at age 45( I believe) and he is only 2 years older than me. I’m getting ready to retire this year and he has to work 5 more years with not the best of health. When I tell him I only work 3 days he often joked and thanked me for reminding him.
A cousin of H’s had his first child at age 47. First and LAST, he is heard to say. The baby is still a baby so they haven’t had to childproof yet or chase anyone around. Poor Dad!
At Parents Weekend at my kids 2 different prep schools, lots of fathers in their 60s w younger looking 2nd (3rd?) wife (or maybe the wives just take better care of their skin). Totally unremarkable.
Nope. Genetics is a piece of the puzzle, but it isnt everything. She could trip and fall down the stairs out of total exhaustion and trying to juggle a bunch of babies, and kill herself. Even with good genes and a relatively clear mind. But, on the bright side, she is probably wrinkly enough that the extra stretch marks wont be that obvious (and before someone slams me, I am not much younger than she is… so this is the voice of experience, sort of )
My neighbors had twins when she was in her mid 50s and dad was in early 70s. Kids are now young teens.
Dad needs a cane to walk, but other than that, he’s in fine shape. He certainly devoted a lot of time to the kids. (He was retired when they were born; mom was still working.) I’d criticize him for other things, but from what I’ve seen, he’s a super devoted and loving father.
I simply can’t imagine having an infant or toddler in my 60s. I can’t imagine it now (I’m 50). I don’t have the stamina to housebreak a puppy, let alone care for an infant. I suppose if you are wealthy and can hire live-in caregivers to get up in the night with your child, it is not as much of a problem.
And as the kids get older, they will challenge you in other ways. I have noticed that some older parents of teenagers don’t monitor and involve themselves in their teens’ lives the way younger parents do. If they had “oops” babies who are now adolescents, these kids get a lot more freedom and independence than their older siblings got, simply because their parents are exhausted. I suppose this could be a good thing, but sometimes it’s not.
This woman would have incredible challenges if she were only having one child at her age. But having quadruplets, who will likely be afflicted with any number of physical problems? All I can say is I hope she has a whole lot of adult help around and doesn’t burden the children with too much responsibility.
I really don’t want my grandchildren playing with my children who are the same age. Just too weird for me. Does this woman have a husband or a partner or is it just her and these 13 (for now) children?
I don’t care that much about how old someone is when they have kids. I do care about artificially creating a wildly unsafe quad pregnancy. It’s more or less guaranteeing severe prematurity with attendant risk of mortality and serious injury and suffering for the children. Morally wrong IMHO.
I would not want a mother that so self absorbed.
She has a bakers dozen of children, but she is having another four! because her youngest needs a sibling?
What are the other children, chopped liver?
