WAY too many people around me lately having health issues. Trying to stay glass half full…this is a good very simple article about daily things to help health - how do you do on the list? Not inclusive a list of course, but a good starting point to determine everyday health habits.
You can click for further explanation but the list summary is:

  1. Go to bed by 10.
  2. Breathe deeply.
  3. Connect with other people.
  4. Eat nuts.
  5. Be strategic about sitting.
  6. Laugh.
  7. Cook.
  8. Get Outside

I can vouch for meeting the requirements for 4-8 on a regular basis. I could probably laugh a little more.

Not so good at 1-3.

  1. Not far off but I’m more 10:30 -11. Point being I suppose total hours of sleep - I get around 7 during the week.
  2. Breathe deeply. Not something I do as a habit.
  3. I can be kind of a loner. Ok being alone, don’t see out much socialization.

Breathe deeply? Too much O2 is detrimental.

I shall go outside now and then eat my cookie with walnuts. I cook most of our meals - actually, all meals eaten at home.

I don’t walk outside often. I have a treadmill in the house to use any time regardless of weather. I don’t need to change clothes to walk.

Nuts hurt my throat.

I go to bed at 8:30 PM and wake up after 1:00 AM to surf CC and watch movies.

^^Is that seriously your bedtime schedule? Like you wake up regularly in the 1-3am range???

Sometimes. It also depends on whether the movies series are good or not. I don’t have a fixed sleeping schedule. I sleep well though.

I have embraced many of these over the last 10 years. 3 and 6 are tougher for me, I’m a loner and don’t have a great sense of humor, but there are those people I love to be around and those are the same ones who tend to make me laugh. Ten, ten-thirty is my bedtime and I sleep 7-8 hours most nights. I love to cook, like to walk outdoors and nuts are my go-to for snacks. Wow, finally a test I"m doing well on haha.

  1. Go to bed by 10.

No, I work unconventional hours. To bed by midnight is my goal, up by 8-ish. I have stopped watching Netflix or Amazon after work and this helps me get to bed at a reasonable hour.

  1. Connect with other people.

Yes, but mainly superficial, but largely enjoyable, interactions with others at work. Sorely missing a group of 1-2 intimate friends. It’s on my list of things to work on; expanding my circle of friends. As an introvert, this does not come easily. I like to be alone, but I’m also lonely at times.

  1. Eat nuts.

Sometimes! I usually eat them in the form of trail mix which sometimes seems like it is venturing into candy territory more than a healthy snack.

  1. Be strategic about sitting.

I’m not sure what this means. I’m on my feet a lot at work. I sit more when I’m at home. I use the pedometer on my phone and I aim to get in over 10K steps per day.

  1. Laugh.

I could use more of this. It’s pretty easy to find funny things to watch on TV or YouTube, but I’m trying to cut back on sitting and staring at screens! I already do enough of that!

  1. Cook.

Bare minimum. With both kids out of the house and away at college, I have become an official non-cooker and I don’t miss it one bit.

  1. Get Outside

Yes, every morning unless the weather is seriously awful for dog paws. I put on an audiobook or podcast and away we go, me and my little fuzzy four legged buddy. Easily get in 2 miles, sometimes up to 5.

I think I do them all. I do go to bed by 10, I’m usually up around 6. My fitbit covers a few of these - one of them is a “relax” mode - where for 2 minutes you follow their deep breathing. I try and do it at least once a day. I’m also supposed to walk 250 steps each hour through the day. So I do get up and move around a bunch during the day. I have 30 pistachios most afternoons. I laugh like a hyena, I have a good sense of humor and married to someone who makes me laugh every day. I enjoy cooking. Back to the fitbit - since increasing my exercise, I walk in local parks and I golf, in the summer I’m out a lot.

So exercise is not one of the 8 or eat vegetables? Hmm.

this list sponsored by nut farmers…

Healthy people might not be exercising “everyday” - or healthy people might be exercising by being outside (8) or by being strategic about sitting (5). It’s a list - certainly not inclusive to everything.

Even something like “eat vegetables” can be construed differently. Is it “healthy” if I say I eat vegetables but what I’m eating is canned peas or a bit of cauliflower smothered in cheese?

Exercise and eating veggies is the bare minimum we all should be doing… that’s why it is not on the list.

  1. Go to bed by 10.

Not even close, but I get at least 8 hours of sleep every day.

  1. Breathe deeply.

Sure.

  1. Connect with other people.

Yes.

  1. Eat nuts.

Sometimes.

  1. Be strategic about sitting.

I’m strategic about standing and getting up and around since getting up and walking around is painful. So no.

  1. Laugh.

Yes.

  1. Cook.

See number 5. No.

  1. Get Outside

Sure, at night when I don’t have to lather on sunscreen. Sun triggers lupus flares. Oh and when it’s warm because the cold hurts my arthritic joints.

Needless to say, I am not healthy

I’m not much of a nut eater, but I think I do most of the other things. I’m an introvert at heart like @basket but I try and interact with people. Easier in the warmer weather though.

I love to laugh, one of best things I love about my H, we love to laugh and not take life so seriously

@coolweather - nut butter is super yummy and easy to make. Just toss some nuts in a mini food processor and let it spin. If you don’t get the right consistency, just add a wee bit of olive oil.

The only time that I am in bed by 10 is if I am sick. When I first started dating my husband of 40 years, he convinced me that it was okay not to watch the 11:00 news as I wasn’t going to have a current events test in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning. My goal has been to try to get to bed by 11:30 but lately Stephen Colbert has been making that hard to do. I don;t get enough sleep, but I do eat a lots of nuts!

I have always functioned best late at night. I blame my dad, who used to let me watch Johnny Carson with him when I was very little.

  1. Go to bed by 10. Never, I'm a night owl. The problem is I can't sleep as late as I'd like to. I usually get 7 hours of sleep.
  2. Breathe deeply. Dunno? Don't do yoga or meditate.
  3. Connect with other people. I'm involved in the neighborhood association. I like my clients.
  4. Eat nuts. I eat a little peanut butter almost every day, but otherwise, not a big nut-eater. They have a lot of calories!
  5. Be strategic about sitting. I lie on the couch with my lap top too much. I have a fair number of days where I spend hours on my feet. Four hours today.
  6. Laugh. I guess so.
  7. Cook. I like to cook. I cook with real ingredients.
  8. Get Outside Not as much as I'd like to. I try to walk several times a week. Some days my job takes me outside. I was out in the rain today for about ten minutes taking pictures of a house. Does that count?

Well, right now I’m eating out, mostly sedentary day, working all night and not getting to sleep until around 7 am, breathing is shallow, by myself with nothing to laugh at. So I guess I’m SOL.

I did, however, eat a handful of nuts.
