A lot of the people I connect with are nuts
All but #1. I’m a night person.
- Go to bed by 10. Yup, earlier if husband doesn't razz me too much.
- Breathe deeply. Yup. Mindfully, several time a day
- Connect with other people. Yup. Walk, gym, lunches.
- Eat nuts. Well, not every day. But quite a bit.
- Be strategic about sitting. Yup. Foam roller at night in front of TV. Kneeling chair at desk. Balance hips in car.
- Laugh. If the occasion arises.
- Cook. Holy Fook NO, NO. NO. Enough of the tyranny of the kitchen. Did it while the kids were home. Made healthy, home made balance meals. Taught them to do the same. Now, it's the Whole Foods salad bar, local taqueria or some other very easy thing to pull together.
- Get Outside Yup. Border collie puppy needs daily walks. Commune with the chickens, or just sit on the deck and read a book. Walk whenever possible.
I had a piece of maple walnut fudge. Does that count for nuts?
^yes
You lost me at #1!
I’m on board for daily nuts, laughing, cooking, and getting outside. But if you read the article, the reason you should go outside is vitamin D. I live in Seattle… so that doesn’t really work for several months in the winter.
I am medium good at connecting with other people – work people, a couple of groups I belong to, a few friends, and my exercise class people – although they have lately been replaced by my PT guy :(. And I talk to my kids a few times a week, and my dad weekly. And I talk to you guys.
Thanks, @rockymtnhigh. You can be my friend.
What’s the point of being in bed by 10 if I’m not going to sleep until 2? That’s ridiculous. And I’m allergic to tree nuts. But I connect with people at work, at sewing, at singing, at swimming. I cook because it’s necessary but I don’t like it. Kind of a dumb list.
I think their idea with cooking is that you can put in more fruits & veggies if you want to (that is what the article says). I guess… but I could order more in restaurants, too. I do like to cook for myself, partly because I can control how much salt I use, whether I use whole grains, and % of fat in the meat I use. So I guess that is healthier.
7 should be "They cook or eat food cooked at home by someone else."
If you look at the article, you’ll see that it’s not saying that the act of cooking is healthy. It’s saying that the act of eating food prepared at home is healthy. If one person in the household cooks food for several, all would benefit.
I do almost all of hose things…except cooking. I dislike cooking and to do so would stress me out. OTOH, H is a very good cook and he does the cooking n our house.
- Go to bed by 10.
I do. - Breathe deeply. I don't know - never thought about how I breathe - but am grateful I do!
- Connect with other people. Yes
- Eat nuts. Not daily, but I like nuts.
- Be strategic about sitting. I'm good here.
- Laugh. Not enough lately - rough year
- Cook. Not so good on this one
- Get Outside Good here - I walk - outside - three miles most mornings.
Guess I have to work on the cooking bit but that means I’d have to go to the grocery store, right? Ugh.
How is one “strategic about sitting”?
^Concentrating on good posture. Not slouching. Not sitting too much every day. I’m not good on this point!
Did anyone else find themselves taking a big, deep breath after they read #2?
Strategic about sitting…yes, posture, frequency, frequent breaks, etc. How many people sit for hours at work before getting up? Or how many people clean up the dinner dishes and then plop on the couch for the next 3 hours. It’s about making a conscience effort to get up and move. And combine that with regular exercise!
So, pick one - which one of these would be a good starting point for you to change? I could work on #3 - interact more with other people, at least in small doses. I recently signed up for some volunteer opportunities with our local running club - maybe that’s my starting point.
** time to pull out the exercise ball to sit on at the computerr
I do all of those, and according to my last checkup last week, I’m healthy (knocks serious wood). Typically I fall asleep at 10:30, though we’re usually in bed by 10 or earlier. I’m a big, big fan of good sleep.
@abasket - thank you for this thread. I love when I read something on here and take away something that makes my life better.
- Most nights I go to bed my 10
- I breathe deeply when I’m in one of my exercise classes but I need to do it more
- Connect with other people- this is something I need to work on. I guess I would call myself an introvert. I don’t mind being alone. I do have friends but I need to make more of an effort to see them in real time
- I do eat nuts. Mainly raw unsalted. I love a small handful of raw almonds with a small amount of goji berries as a snack or on the go breakfast or on top of yogurt.
- I try to not spend to much time sitting. My feet get numb if I sit for long so that is usually my sign to get up and move.
- Laugh- this is the one that I’ve been focusing on the most since you posted this thread. I need to laugh more. I am also acknowledging to myself when something makes me smile
- I cook most nights
- I live in Ca so I have no excuse to not get outside. I’m trying to take advantage of the weather and also dine outside.
