Young transfers

I’ve decided to make a thread similar to the one last year:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/671763-young-people-transferring.html

So, I’ll start:
-I am 16 (Will turn 17 when I start in September)
-4.0 GPA
-will start at UCLA as a Mathematics of Computation major.

Who else on here is young, where are you going, and what’s your major?

16 (will turn 17 when i start in september)
3.94 gpa
ucla!!!
philosophy

if you don’t mind me asking, how are you doing this? did you graduate hs early or drop out and go to a cc? I had a class with a guy once that had been there since he was 15.

google:

chspe :)

Started CC when I was 14 while I was still in HS. Passed CHSPE (Proficiency certificate - CCCs/CSUs/UCs accept this) Mar 2009.

Finished High school in June 2009 at 15. By June 2009 I already had 25 units. I took 5 units in the summer, 22.5 in the fall, and 22 now leaving me with 74.5 Semester units, plus multiple APs that I didn’t factor in. IGETC completed Fall 2009.

If you’re wondering how I finished my Math prereqs, skipped trig (self-taught) and
Summer 2009 - Calc I -A
Fall 2009 - Calc II - A
Spring 2010 - Calc III, DE, LA

And someone sent me a PM asking my race, so I figured instead of replying he/she can view it here publicly… White Non-hispanic. I’m an Italian/US dual citizen.

wow rpicton, that is amazing. 15???

christ kid you are a dedicated and serious person.

if i were your mother i would be proud of you, in fact i am proud of all the young transfers.

congratulations on your success, ambitions and dedication.

that’s quite impressive. so you did hs and cc simultaneously?

Thanks, and yes. Though, I was limited to 11 units per semester and had to get special permission to register. If I were to do it again, it wouldn’t have happened. Luckily I got in before the budget cuts and increased enrollment. (And luckily I am a 1 year transfer so I don’t have to deal with the mess next semester at my CCC).

Ohh I see. You’re wasting no time! Are you at all worried about adjusting to an older crowd? Or are you used to it by now having been at a cc?

whoa… you guys are crazy. Props though for being ahead of the game

I’d like to know what you guys are planning to do after your degree when you are 19 or 20 by the time you graduate, grad school? or straight to work or other stuff?

Nobody has ever questioned my age in 2 years, and I have about some older friends who still to this day do not know my age and probably think I’m 20. Over 6 ft, full facial hair, and enrolled in a high level Math class taking it in the morning where the typical 16 year old would be in HS. That’s why I guess.

As of right now I have no plans for graduate school. I would like to take a year off or more and get a job to see what I really like. Best case scenario would be the company pays for it and I get my degree (Most likely a Masters) in something I like. The thesis would probably be related to the company. I know a lot of schools allow you to do your thesis based on outside research.

I’m interested in Information Security or Artificial Intelligence. The latter I’d probably have to get a PhD to do anything. One of the main reasons why people don’t get PhDs is they don’t want to be 27-31 when they graduate. If I did a PhD right out of UCLA I’d be about 23.

It’s tough. I have such a head start it would seem like a waste to just stop at a Bachelors, but on the other hand I could get a job at 18 and make some money.

whoa. so dedicated. i started cc at 14 too but it was like… 1-2 classes a year and often, against my will (parents. boo :() gotta give it to you for being so self-motivated. but question: why the rush?

why not dilly dally taking pointless high school classes and just cruising around and enjoying your youth? you’re missing out on lots of high school stuff. any regrets?

Not really rushing things. The AP courses I would have taken junior and senior year I have basically already taken at my CC now. Only catch is that the APs would have been pointless as they don’t give course equivalency.

If you were referring to the amount of units I am taking, that’s just the pace I work at. I actually have tons of free time.

None so far.

Never had to take the SAT, ACT, I still hang out with the same friends from high school often. I still volunteer occasionally although I don’t need it for admissions purposes. I still participate in select HS school events. It’s almost like I’m still in high school. If anything, I’d probably be missing out on the college experience.

Going to CCC also saved my parents a ton of money.

Oh - and my parents played no role in this. They supported my decisions but I did all the research on everything. I decided for myself that this was best for me.

This is the reason why I say high school is a waste of time. The grades you work for in high school is no meaning. You might as well skip high school and go straight to community college. The only con is that you miss out on many of teenage experiences. I know someone who skipped who is in my class. Even though he is smart as hell (~4.0) he is more immature than the majority of my classmates.

Chspe for life!!!

Omg yes. I hate how i’ve taken a bunch of AP courses and they don’t count for jack at my CC. wthell. Why did i take them in the first place then!?

I agree. A lot of the classes I took at my community college are the exact same classes I took during high school, just more time-compressed.

Yup. This. The only benefit from high school was that it forced me to get more involved in non-academic things. Like clubs, team sports, class spirit, school dances, volunteer work, etc.

I will be 20 when I graduate (skipped a year in elementary school and am a one-year transfer thanks to summer CC and AP’s) so I’m still young, although not as young as you guys. But I think we’ve always been the younger ones in our class, which helps us mature earlier. I don’t think that HS is a waste of time, though- academically, yes, but socially it was when I became an adult and I don’t think that would have happened if I went straight into CC.

I’m on the same boat as cpbbookworm. Except I finished hs early not middle school. But I did spend 3 years in hs which gave me plenty of time to become social. (I was an awkward middle schooler)

same as cpbbookworm and corinnejay

I skipped a grade in HS, finish cc in 1 year, will graduate when 20
The only lost I feel is the 2 first year at a 4 year university. I met back my old friends and from what I see, they have the time of their lives.
But whatever, I will try to enjoy the next 2 years at UC

@rpicton : wow ! good job. after all the hardwork, now u can slow down to enjoy the college experience as a junior + senior :)
