Hi! I’m Caitlyn, and I’m a junior in high school. I have been extremely interested in health, science, and math and excel in those subjects. In college, I am planning on majoring in biomedical engineering. I have been offered a position to be president of film appreciation club, a club I have been a part of for two years already. I was super excited for this because with me, the club might be able to accomplish some things and organize events next year. I also wanted to apply for a position as treasurer of Mu Alpha Theta, an honor society I have been a part of for a year. The problem is that the meeting for declaring who is president is on Thursday, and Thursday is the day members elect people for Mu Alpha Theta. Since both meetings happen at the same time, I am forced to choose between the two. If I do not attend the film appreciation club meeting, I will not be given a position.
I am curious as to what you guys think I should do in this situation. I am concerned about how this looks to colleges. Mu Alpha Theta is a good club to have a position in, but besides math, I have a passion for film. Should I show that passion by taking the position? In addition, there is a back up for film appreciation club president, who I believe can do very well. Overall, I’m just conflicted.
But if you don’t go to the Mu Alpha Theta meeting, you can’t be elected treasurer? That seems implicit in your question, but not totally clear. And, if you go to film club, but are not elected president, you would have neither? Gotta decide how important having one or the other is important to you. I’d go with film club, since that seems to be a passion and honor societies are a dime a dozen.
I would choose the film society…because you have been involved with it and have now grown into a leadership position with it.
I do alumni interviews for a college and leadership can be in anything you have a passion for…it doesn’t just have to be in Math. Taking advanced math and science is what will get you into Biomedical Engineering.
BTW If you like Biomedical Engineering and Film, check out Case Western Reserve University…we loved going to the CWRU film society’s film: http://films.cwru.edu/
I am so sorry. I meant that the treasurer position isn’t a guarantee because it is an election, while the president position is being offered by the current president of film appreciation club.
Well, if you were my daughter, I’d say go with the one that interests you the most. Not sure I view treasurer as much of a leadership position, but that depends on how much actual responsibility you would have. Film club, chance to maybe really do something …
