Did anyone who was accepted into Rice this year have a few B’s throughout high school?
I’ve had some trouble this year with a couple of classes, however, I will be a junior next year, and there is no way that I will be underestimating the workload, or the courses themselves. Do you think that if I get straight A’s next semester, the colleges will recognize the improvement, and keep an open mind?
Just fyi, here is a little information about my school & my current status:
Class size of 550. (In top 5%)
Most of the school’s graduates attend UC’s. VERY few at competitive universities outside of California.
Southern California Public School-not exactly the nicest side of town.
Scholar Athlete for my Varsity Swim team two years in a row now.
Strongest subjects are history and english.
Would like to major in kinesiology, the classics, or english.

I got all B’s sophomore year and 2 B’s junior year, none first semester of senior. But I went to a very competitive private school, so I think it depends on the context of your school, which is hard to judge without the School Profile.

I would say that the courses at my school are moderately rigorous, and I’ve been taking the hardest courseload available since freshman year.

Yeah, I got plenty of Bs, especially freshman/sophomore year. I got in with a 3.63 unweighted GPA. Try to get as few as possible, though.

Soulside Journey, did you attend a very competitive private high school, or one fairly similar to my school? Or, did you have an amazing hook?
Thanks very much for the reply, to both of you!
Any additional replies would be greatly appreciated!

I attend a public highschool in a bad part of houston. I had 12 B’s from freshman to sophomore year and none first semester of senior year. I got into Rice regular decision. My unweighted GPA is like 15th in my class of 181. But I have more AP classes than anyone else, so my weighted GPA is 2nd in the class.

Six B’s and a C… heh. but I got straight A’s junior and senior year (save for one B 1st sem junior). I go to a pretty good public school.
It definitely helps you’re in the top 5%.

Interesting…anyone else?
Oh, and congratulations on your acceptances! :)

I had mutliple Bs. The only year/semester when I didn’t have a B was senior year. But then again, I took one of the harder schedules at a top public.

Did you apply ed or rd?

I went to a very competitive public magnet school and took many AP/IB courses (11 APs and 6 IBs, to be exact). My GPA was upward-trending (went from a 3.4 freshman year to a 3.63 junior year). Also, on the “additional information” section of my application, I explained how I got my act together when I realized how important good grades were. I thought that my essays were pretty good, too. In short, if you have the ability to make an A in the class, then take the class seriously enough to do so.

bump…

I applied ED, I had a few B’s every now and then but mostly A’s. I did however have my share of C’s (two to be exact).

you will be fine…

hehe, Thanks for the encouraging words!
One more question… (don’t worry!)
For those who attend/were accepted into Rice:
Was Rice your top choice?
I was just curious, because the majority of people that I talked to when I visited the campus said that it was not their top choice, but that it should have been. ?

Yeah, top choice

yersh, top choice :D

Top choice.

sort of? I had like 5 places i wouldnt mind going. Also my parents are big on the “you must stand on your own feet” thing so I had to get a decent scholarship to go (they would pay the rest… but still)

so I had like 4 choices and rice gave me lots of money. so it became a top choice :)

I had at least one B or B+ each semester of high school. What can I say? I’m not a big fan of English. Went to a decent private school, nothing amazing.

And for the second question, Rice was my top choice for a verrrrry long time. I told people I wanted to go there. Then I started applying elsewhere and fell in love with MIT, but was scorned. Rice is awesome though, so I don’t mind.
