A few questions from an incoming first year.

  1. What is the difference between the New College and Traditional General Education Curriculum? I'm leaning towards the New College but am not quite sure what the differences are? They seem like the same thing.
  2. The Student Information Form for the College of Arts and Sciences... I didn't write a well thought out essay or anything for the questions. I moreso answered the questions with the most basic grammar and word choice. Is the mechanics and level of language important in these questions? Should I have treated these like college essays and wrote better? Or is just the content important?
  3. Housing. I applied for a two person dorm. However, I am slightly intrigued by Brown, however I have a few issues. First off, I do not want to be "segregated" from the rest of campus. In high school, I was part of a magnet school that did not allow much communication with the "regular" high school student. I did not like this. Would Brown cause this form of segregation? What views do students hold of Brown residents?

Thank you for your time reading and answering questions. Go Hoos!

Class of 2021

Here is the website that explains the three “general education” curriculum options for incoming students: http://gened.as.virginia.edu/

You can read about each option and also see a comparison chart. It’s a very helpful site!

Regarding the information form, that’s a question for the College. However, I think that as long as you got the pertinent information in there, you’re fine. This isn’t some formal declaration of academic intent. It’s used for advising purposes.

I LOVE Brownies, so I am totally biased when it comes to your third question

Thanks Dean J,
Can you clarify what a “fellow” is?

@TheProdigalRoommate, if you mean the College Fellows, the curriculum website explains…

@TheProdigalRoommate, I’m with you. I’m reading the comparison chart Dean J said to look at, but I’m still not understanding the specifics about New College and Forums. Clear as mud. It’s nice to have choices, but they need to give some examples or better explanations so students understand what they’re signing up for.

I don’t think students are expected to make a decision about this before they get some advising at orientation.

Thanks Dean, I guess I’ll wait until orientation to make a decision. Thanks for the responses.

My son got an email stating he needed to make a decision before orientation:

“Incoming first-year students must select their preferred curriculum by June 4, 2017.”

Perhaps they can change it at orientation if they desire???

Hi all,

privatelD is correct that students must select a curriculum prior to June 4th.

The College will only let students enter the New College Curriuclum or Forums Curriculum at orientation if the seats have not already been taken during this application period.
