A Meta-thread to save us all time

The Greeks gave rise to the Olympics and Aristotle. Sports and intellectualism are not mutually exclusive. Think mind-body connection. You’d be wise not to insult the Greeks. Zeus might hit you with a lightening bolt.

Well, I mean, I just see all these athletes getting full rides to Ivy League schools, and their parents are just sooooo full of themselves.

My older son got a full ride for mini-court indoor soccer (one of his favorite IM sports). He rocks it. Totally rocks it. Younger son is hoping on a full ride for an equally challenging and prestigious sport (to be determined when he gets to TEPS or TITS or wherever we send the money tomorrow but I think he is leaning toward tetherball a la napoleon dynamite). Do you think it is asking too much to have that full ride given to us BEFORE we commit to the actual sport? I don’t. He is THAT good. At whatever. He does a great slow clap. And of course, he dominates in Halo. So many choices.

Could one of you please help me compose a double spaced PM asking TEPS/TITS to give my son a full ride for his anticipated sports performances??? Thanks. You are good friends. Deadline is tomorrow so we are a bit under the gun here.

DS1, a competitive athlete (JV football, 3 years), was unexpectedly not admitted anywhere this year. . . . despite applying to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, AND Princeton. Top 30% of his class, 1650 SAT I total (CR + M + W), 24 ACT (thanks to a year-long prep course, which was well worth the expenditure), many EC’s, vice-president of 6 clubs (each of which he attends at least semi-annually). Great essays! Great recommendations! (All said he was one of their top 30% this year!)

Are any worthwhile universities still accepting applications? Or should he take a gap year and try again for HYPS?

Kitkat, with your S’s Napoleon Dynamite interests, perhaps he could branch out in his ECs, in case the sports thing isn’t enough (though I can’t imagine how that could be.) Perhaps he could run a student body presidential campaign, or maybe enter a dance contest.

Vote for Pedro.

Gaaaahhh! Somebody stop me before I become TOO arch! Or did that happen 20 posts ago?

Zoosermom, you apparently weren’t around in '69 for the for the most important event of the 60’s! The Mets did the Miracle while the Yankees are just so passe.

BAfromBC: “BTW if the teachers at your school are not as ignorant as the one’s at my D’s school” - are you sure you want to put an apostrophe in ones? Sounds like just a simple plural of one to me, and if the admissions people get wind of such an error, well … you know what might happen!

I’m really surprised at everyone not honoring Binx’s request to wait until 12:13 before posting! There’s only a few minutes to go! I’m sure that she’ll appreciate that I combined 3 messages in one. But maybe what we all should have done was just edit previous messages!

I don’t want to make him sound one dimensional. He has so many athletic skills, beyond Napoleon Dynamite. He can quote entire sections of Fight Club too. Plus the aforementioned Halo.

Actually he has a great assortment of throwing stars and swords and assorted weird weaponry too - maybe there is a throwing star varsity team at TEPS? Or a potato gun team? He can do that too!

Oh the choices!

(scurrying off to write a whole new series of essays for him to submit). FULL RIDE HERE WE COME!

QuantMech - I think you may just need to redirect those finely honed athletic skills into something MARKETABLE. Like cage fighting. Or things like I noted above. Those are the programs that give lots of money for your little prince!

Vote for Pedro?

No.

Be more proactive.

You’re better than Pedro.

Become Pedro.

Only Bigger and Better Pedro.

Start your own club and fundraise for the operation.

This may not have been done yet at any US HS so you’d have a truly unique hook.

What ivy could resist a kid who selflessly became Pedro for the good of all mankind. Bigger and Better Pedro will solve all of the world’s problems and every school will want to put a photo of you in their viewbook.

OMG GreyDad!

Now you know what we’re up against at my D’s school. I actually (and proudly) went to the same school.

(That was no ordinary typo. ) They actually taught us to put in erroneous apostrophe’s wherever we could. They are grooming the elite leader’s of tomorrow. Apostrophe’s are the new power punctuation. Use as many as you can no matter whether they are called for or not. It confuse’s everyone and you can more easily assert your superiority. The school’s’ motto is “baseball and apostrophe’s for all.” Though now it’s translated into several fake languages and Esperanto and the banner’s hang in the gym as a reminder to all.

couldn’t just watching Napoleon Dynamite over and over be an EC? It seems to be for lots of kids I know.

It still really gripes my you-know-what that athletes are getting all these breaks. I will remain forever bitter knowing that some stupid athlete got my kid’s rightful spot at a college my kid deserved to get into. And I will continue to bring that up whenever I hear one of those schools mentioned. No offense to the parents of athletes, of course. :)

It’s 12:13 and binx should be back now, so it’s ok to post again.

Watch Napoleon Dynamite all you want if you simply want an ordinary EC?

But who on CC wants to be ordinary?

Go big or go to a state school or a (heaven forbid) community college.

I just did a search on “Ivy League” and “athletes” and discovered y’all!!!

I’m so happy to find my people because it turns out that our GC has been giving us REALLY BAD advice for a long time. He’s stuck in the “well rounded” theory of admissions, and hasn’t even heard of “edgy” or “angular” and doesn’t know anything about likely letters or recruited athletes. Because of his reactionary philosophy, we let our DD drop soccer at the end of middle school, to follow some other ECs like community service and music. YIKES! Just yesterday I realized soccer was her real PASSION!

Last night she and I looked through our video tapes and we were just AMAZED at her talent, especially in the U14 City Councilmen’s Soccer Cup, a championship we’ll never forget.

Anyway, watching these highlights gave us an idea for a little project. She’s got a few AP tests this month (she’s a rising senior, VERY GIFTED) but has a little free time. We were thinking “just for fun” we could put together a movie about soccer. We’d like it to be just about girls playing soccer, and really just girls with blonde pony tails who wear the number 5. Best would be red uniforms with the number five.

If you’d like your daughter to be in our movie, PM me!! We’re most interested in really spectacular soccer footage showing skills like goal saves, headers into the goal, bicycle kicks, and receiving awards like state or national tournament trophies. Don’t worry, for your security, we’ll digitally obscure faces!!

Well, thanks for participating in our movie. She’d like to get it done about two weeks before July 1st.

skrlvr: The past is so yesterday but the future is so uncertain–tough call. Clearly the present is out of the question.

Your son needs to do a few overnight visits to see which era is the best fit.

He should check out which schools in the past had indoor plumbing if that sort of thing is important to him. In the future such things may not even be necessary…

Congrats on your son’s ingenuity.

A little background: Most kindergarteners at local magnet elementary school take NAP TIME, but my son thought that he should take the most rigourous schedule possible and substituted AP GENERAL RELATIVITY/QUANTUM MECHANICS (Hey Quantmech!) for NAP TIME and is doing exceedingly well.

Anyway, his teacher just called and told me that during lab time he just finished making A TIME MACHINE that works.

So here are a few questions for my fellow CCers:

Should he apply to the TOP ELITE PRIVATE SCHOOL of the past or the future? Here’s my thoughts:

a. If he applies to the school of the past, it would be much, much easier to get in. We all know how much less accomplished students were in the past that were accepted to TOP ELITE PRIVATE SCHOOL. Heck, I know a TOP ELITE PRIVATE SCHOOL graduate from 20 years ago whose science fair project involved nothing more than getting electricity from a potato.

b. If he applies to the school of the past, it might be a hook (how many kids from the future are there?) but at the same time his being from the future might be considered a big advantage so he would also be expected to accomplish more. Do we even have to put down on the application that he is from the future?

c. If he applies to the school of the future, he could apply as a history or archaeology major. I think it would be a distinct hook–I’m sure those profs. would be excited to work with someone from the past.

Also, if you think the past is best, what century/decade would make the best fit? I wish I knew a little bit more what the future would be like. That would certainly help in making a decision. Should I even be considering the future, not knowing what makes the best fit? I guess we could always visit.

Thanks for you help!

I am late to this party. I haven’t had a chance to read the 355 posts, but since I will be up all night with my s obsessing about which college to select and which to put on the NM postcard (which I will then send overnight super high priority express mail with a personal carrier to hand deliver to NM – should only cost a few thousand dollars) I wil read it then. Wait, maybe I should send deposits to all his schools and wait til the end of August to see which roommate and dorm he likes best. That seems like a reasonable way to decide. And come to think of it, maybe I should make a color copy of the yellow NM postcard and send one in for each school. You don’t think they’ll mind, do you??

*EDIT**
Wow! Just in the time it took to type this, 3 more posts appeared. I am a slow reader, guys. I’ll be up all night. Is there a special SAT speed-reading course I can take?

jym, NOW you get it! [wink]

BAfromBC: OH! I didn’t realize that it was now acceptable to have apostrophes (oops! apostrophe’s!) in plural as well as possessive! I’ve been reacting and getting upset for no reason! My family will be SO happy if I stop getting upset about this issue. Bless you for setting me free from this anxiety!
