Yikes! I’ve de-railed this thread! It’s all about ME! Which could be important, but Garland had a different idea when she started!

Time for another apology!

Ok! I’m ready to apply garland’s time management program and contribute in a positive way by helping deserving people (students ARE people, aren’t they?) achieve their goals while continuing to earn a living, work on the house, and spend time with my family. How do I do that again? Did I miss where that’s posted in the 750 posts? (must be by now since I’m taking so long to write this) I skipped a few pages at the beginning. Was the program posted there?

Comparing my education to what my kids are getting:

There’s a HUGE difference with the big state schools! It’s really true. The money’s worth it, folks, as long as you want to make a real difference in your children’s lives. Of course, those who want to pretend that they care can go right on doing what they’re doing.

Ooh! My first serious contribution! That counts, right?

JHS – i think you should tell the church to buy your dad’s car. He can walk; after all, you did.

With that newfound money, you should buy a condo on the Upper East Side NOW while there are so many foreclosures and prices are really cheap. Then, decide your internship based upon which subway line connects to Goldman Sachs v. JP Morgan.

Don’t assume taxis right from the get-go; rather, acquire some humility, please (you’re in Parents Forum, what kind of advice did you expect from us after all).

So, when I get my i-banking internship from Harvard, should I go with JP Morgan or Goldman Sachs? Which one is more prestigious? Do I have to apply to Merrill Lynch or Citicorp as a safety? What if one of them makes me an offer before my Goldman Sachs call-back?"

You need to find out if you’re going to have to share a bathroom with any other i-bankers. If you do, then it’s clearly a Second-Tier i-bank, and leave it for the great Unwashed State Schoolers.

Boy, JHS. Your post raises a lot of really interesting, really unique issues. The one that jumps out at me is about your dad, the minister. Any chance there’s snake handling involved? It might could make for a interesting essay.

Eventually one reaches the point where one is embarrassed by one’s post count (look to the left). A post count at a certain level is an unrelenting indicator of Having No Life.

And, a high post count is irreversible. All you can do is lay off - for a long while - so the daily average descends from the stratosphere.

JSH, surely, you can find something else to do besides bother the rest of the world with this bru-ha-ha. You should be on another thread, where someone will care.

My S wants to write his essay on how he has ridden every single roller-coaster (from Hell to Breakfast) in the US. Can this be an EC? He has a lot of engineering studies to back up his opinions on all these coasters. I am sure this will be a hook for him. He could even paint the wooden ones; how’s that GreyDad? And, he owns RollerCoaster Tycoon I, II, AND III. Do you think this could get him into some schools besides T.I.T.S.? Maybe one of the sister schools?

I just noticed that HarrietMWelsch asked me a question, way back in post #661. If only there were some way to send her an individual message, without posting it for everyone to read ;)

Yes, I have quite a lot to say about turning, of course. I’ve just finished reading a student’s paper that referred to a comment by Jeffrey Barrett about the “angular momentum of all the sheep in Austria,” in an ill-considered attempt to refute the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. [This statement is true. . . . except maybe the adjective “ill-considered” . . . in case Jeffrey Barrett is reading this.]

Unfortunately, I’m not too sure of the context of HarrietMWelsch’s question. I mainly read the posts that refer to me. So I’m limited to responding to posts #660 and 661:
" 'til by turning, turning, we come round right."
(didn’t have to look that one up.)

But, to return to more important issues, quite a while ago (Post #469? Maybe. Who knows?) I offered to mentor Harriet’s S2 in acoustics, if he would make a CD of his famed “Burping Cantata” to send to a few adcoms I could nominate. Since then, I have received ABSOLUTELY NO inquiries about this CD. So I can only conclude that:
A) Once Harriet announced S2’s college acceptance (in post #569), everyone assumed that he would drop all his EC’s, now that they had served their purpose . . . , or else
B) All the inquiries have gone to Harriet. Or perhaps
C) No one else is interested in sending a “Burping Cantata” CD to adcoms. You’re happy with all of them? You’re just way more resilient and mature than I am? Nah, probably you just have younger children, and you’re still afraid of offending any adcoms.

Oh, jmmom, re: #748, I already mentioned that I’m working on the time machine to fix the post-number problem. Have some faith in me, plz! Or just contact skrlvr’s son.

Well, I’m off to the RD Decisions threads, to find more waitlisted and rejected “top scorers” whose grudges I can nurse vicariously.

Hey greydad-
Am I hallucinating now? I could have sworn that you had several threads listed under your name. Now I come back to peek at them and poof, they are gone. Didn’t you start some paint-the-walls threads?

On another note-- is it TRUE!!! I heard Linen’s 'n Things filed for bankrupcy today. AAGGHH!!! Right before school shopping?? Good thing we have BB&B (and I have a million coupons, thank you for asking). Maybe they’ll have good deals. I love a bargain.

What happened? I went to sleep and woke up thirteen pages behind. Don’t any of you CC addicts ever sleep?

Voila, dad. It doesn’t matter whether or not your DD’s gift is from the gods. The Ig Nobel rule is publish or perish, i.e. if you don’t publish your findings you can perish the thought of ever standing on that stage at Cambridge to deliver your 30-second summary of your work/acceptance speech.

JHS: my consistent advice to all of you high school students thinking of becoming investment bankers or corporate attorneys is to GET A LIFE, FOR PETE’S SAKE! You’ll have plenty of time to consider working 80 - 100 hours a week and being unable to find the time to spend the humungous amounts of money you will earn. Right now you’re supposed to be thinking about whch of the 3000 or so colleges in the US (not counting overseas) you want to try to get into, so you can be exposed to all sorts of new ideas and possibly be induced to scrap that dream in favor of the cockamammie ideal of becoming an underwater museum junior assistant curator or a community activist like Barack Obama. When you’re a junior you can return to the meshuggener ideas you currently have, if you’re still so inclined.

In all seriousness, Greaybeard, they don’t like us linking to outside animated or video sites that can’t be pre-screened for acceptability (though, if they’ve let this thread go unscathed, their standard meter probably needs a recalibration)

Did anyone here used to watch that show, “Northern Exposure?” Well, it was one of my favorites OF ALL TIME. Now, what brings this up is dadofsam’s post #754, where he tells the i-banking people (why don’t they just go to trade school?) to GET A LIFE.

Well, as you N.Exp Lovers may recall, RuthAnn, who owned the little store, had a son in New York who was an investment banker. When told this normally-hidden detail about RuthAnn’s family, Maggie looks at the floor and responds: “oh, I’m sorry.” It is one of my fav lines ever from a tv show. Right after, “He’s dead, Jim.”
