A&O session experiences

What to expect from an A&O session? Please share your experience :)

I also want to know, I will have O&A on August 17th.

Lots of walking and lots of listening.

^Agree.

Keep an open mind, meet some new people. I met a few of my close friends at orientation; we kept in touch after. Be patient if things are going at a slower pace than you expected.

Food = buffet in McMahon (at least last year), but there are so many people and some summer camps … fill up that plate. You might not be able to go back for seconds.

The dinner consisted of baked potatoes, salad, and chili. All you can eat.

^my dinner was penne pasta, salad, and garlic bread, and lemon bars for dessert. so it must vary.

thanks guys! I"m excited!! A&O for transfer students only lasts from 8am-3pm …i don’t think i’ll be having any dinner ahah

Allen89 i’m also going on the 17th.

you gotta be kidding me…

I should have gone to the regular orientation instead of the engineering one…

I was a transfer student…at my A&O we got a free all you can eat lunch with yummy crossant sandwiches, chips, salad, very yummy brownies, soda, etc

Our group had the baked potato/chili for dinner and of course I think every group had McMahon’s buffet for lunch on the second day.

The skits were the best part of orientation, by far.

I had my transfer session 8/3. There was a lot of information, a lot of it I already knew or didn’t pertain to me. However, there was some really good stuff I didn’t know. We took a small tour of campus, met with an advisor (they schedule them within your department, if possible. Even competitive majors), had a ton of power point presentations (including how to register).

We ate lunch in Kane Hall. Had sandwiches, salad, chips and cookies.

Like everyone else said, bring comfortable shoes. I really wish I brought water because we didn’t really stop too much, or have big breaks. Lunch was at 12:30, the A&O is 8:30-3:30 so bring snacks if you need them.

when is the UW class of 2016 O&A? for June especially.
and when the fall classes start???

I’m just posting to say that my session was incredibly boring, though I suppose it differs for everyone. It’s basically a tour of campus, and then you get to register for classes, which, in my opinion, was the most useful event of the entire affair.

I would say that Advising and Orientation was one of the worst things I’ve ever had to endure. Long, boring, embarrassing. Look forward to my summer camp type activities placed under the euphemism of “ice breakers”. It’s really a bummer that it’s required. Rather belittling I thought. The orientation leaders treat you like kids (aka campers, to keep the analogy going), as opposed to peers, which is really what you are.

Slightly worse than Dawg Daze, though they are equally atrocious.

Wow, that sounds unpleasant. I don’t want to be forced to socialize.

I thought the material was pretty straight forward (bordering slightly boring logistics). I didn’t feel “forced” to socialize with anyone else (our ice breaker was stating our name and intended major), but unless you want to be quiet for two days, it’s probably a good idea to get to know a few people. I didn’t feel like I was belittled, but I had pretty laid back orientation leaders for my groups. It probably depends on who you’re paired up with.

I didn’t even show up to dawg daze my freshman year (flu and fever and stuff, yeah!). That week is not required at all, but my sophomore year I did some of the random activities with my friends and it was pretty fun. Lots of free swag, fun picture taking and just relaxing before school started. DO NOT FEEL OBLIGATED TO GO TO THIS JUST BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE IS. It’s probably a good idea to go make the “W” formation if you want some ‘memorable’ thing, but that’s about it.

Alright, thank you, I was worried that I would be forced to do extensive amounts of socialization with people not of my choice. I am a very selective person.

What kind of free stuff do you get at Dawg Daze? I’m very interested in this.

Shirts, lanyards, notebooks, energy drinks, food (lol … starting “freshman 15” early? ;D), … pens, and experiences, such as learning how to dance, rock climb, there is a vast array of things to do.

*many, not “my” I cannot type

Wow, that sounds fun! I will be sure to attend!
