Should I assume that the admin officers know basic storyline of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy? It’s a famous book but I am not sure if they are familiar with it.

Somebody in the admissions office should know it.

I just don’t want them to be surprised at my essay and say, “what is 42?”

The answer to life, duh!

And if it makes you a bit more confident, I haven’t read the book, and I know that.

^ I second that. Its popular enough that most people should know a little about it, even if they haven’t read it or seen the movie. Like me.

ha. i didn’t know. but i’m sure you don’t have to go in the plotline for anything.

^yeah we’re not talking about a book report here- just a brief catalog of your cultural interests.

I wrote about what I got out of the book… I was not sure if I should explain how 42 came out because I mentioned it later in the essay.

Just say something to the effect of, “I learned that 42 is the meaning of life.”

I wrote about the Twilight Zone which is just as trivial, and they understood it perfectly. Just on the extra info section, put “I hope you guys read (name of book)”.

I wrote about my love of Coldplay. lol

It’s Chicago so I think they will be very flexible as long as I tell them what type of person I am.

Hmm…I think you are correct!
