What is UVA’s reputation wherever you live? It would help me if you could maybe include a comparable university in your mind (reputation-wise).

I am from the NYC metro and even in the 90s, UVA was known as a top public school.
There are peer institution lists all over the internet for every school. Just do some googling.
I wouldn’t choose a college based upon reputation, but UVa is widely recognized in Conn., NY, NJ and PA, which explains the large number of applicants and alums from those states. I view UVa as having a similar reputation in the Northeast as U. Michigan has in the mid-west (although U. Michigan is twice the size of UVa).
