Aberystwyth University

Hello!

My name is Adriel, and I’m from Sao Paulo Brazil.
I always wanted to study and live in the UK, and last weekend I met with some representatives from Aberystwyth University at the EDUEXPOS here in my city and got some good information. Then I researched about the University, browsed their website, and I became very interested. Before I apply, I have some questions about the University and about living in Wales could you help me please?

Is Aberystwyth University a good school for International Students?
What’s studying and living in Wales like? It is a nice place?
It’s safe?
What’s the weather like?
What are the best things to do there?
Do you have any advices or recommendations about living there?

I guess that’s all…

Thanks Very Much!

Aberystwyth is a small seaside town on the west coast of Wales with the gentler Cambrian mountains behind and Snowdonia to the north. It is a beautiful area, temperate climate and, like all of the west coast, has plenty of rain and wind but also plenty of holiday makers in the summer and has its share of lovely days. It is as safe as all small towns - no worries there. Most of the local people will be bilingual in English and Welsh and you will hear plenty of both languages. <a href=“University guide 2023: Aberystwyth University | University guide | The Guardian”>http://www.theguardian.com/education/2009/may/10/universityguide-aberystwyth-uni</a> gives a brief summary. It would be a good idea to google the student room for more information. The student responses can be very helpful though there may be some which are not! There is also a university guide which give a students ‘warts and all’ view of all UK unis but sadly the title escapes me.

Thnks for your reply!

It got flooded earlier this year and made the national news! Otherwise it is a nice seaside holiday town. You will probably find it rainy, grey and cold (though it is nothing out of the ordinary for northern Europe). Obviously this is a small place in the country so it’s going to be much less diverse than a city like London. If you like outdoor activities like climbing and hiking you will love the area. If you like big cities and nightlife, not so much.

The flood video - taken from student accommodation (on the plus side, the accommodation is right on the beach)

It is a very small town, compared to Sao Paolo and the nearest big city is Birmingham (about 3 hours away by train). But, Aberystwyth is a quaint place, with beautiful beaches and countryside nearby. There are the typical student bars and pubs and adequate shopping in town. The university has a good reputation.

Wales is so so beautiful. Aber’s not the MOST picturesque place (compared with somewhere like Snowdonia), but it’s really lovely imo (my family’s from there so I may be biased…). That being said it’s pretty small, and the weather is utter ■■■■. It’s safe though!!

Is Aberystwyth University a good school for International Students? yeah it’s an okay school.

What’s studying and living in Wales like? It is a nice place? can’t say. although one of my friends has an older sister there, and (keep in mind she’s only told us what she complained about!) the worst I’ve heard is that people keep stealing her snacks

It’s safe? Much safer than Sao Paulo

What’s the weather like? It rains a lot, and not in the humid warm way like you get in Brazil. It’s bitterly cold rain.

What are the best things to do there? No clue.

Do you have any advices or recommendations about living there? Make sure you don’t let people nick your food!
