I’m talking about UVA. We have not visited UIUC yet.

We were there in June during the worst of the heat and no rain. We loved the countryside in Charlottesville and my husband and I really enjoyed visiting the vineyards. We were surprised at the homelessness in Charlottesville proper as well. The downtown area is beautiful with lots of fun restaurants and shops, but there are people wandering around and sleeping all over the ground. We didn’t feel unsafe, even at night, but it’s pretty sad.

I’m so glad your daughter had a good experience at UVA! You’re right about low OOS acceptance, but I hope she ends up where she wants to be.

We also saw a number of homeless in “The Corner” area (by the campus where the restaurants are) and that was a concern for us. Best of luck to your son as well.

I know - I was kidding. But that was my interpretation of UIUC 30 years ago and my son’s when he visited five years ago.

The point being - the other poster loved UVA and had a hard believing believing what you said. I’m like the other poster - I think UVA is gorgeous.

But you don’t - and that’s ok - everyone sees things differently. I think UIUC is a dumpster fire - but others love it and dispute that.

That’s why you visit - you did, UVA wasn’t for your son, and that’s great knowledge for you!!!

Should have taken him to Va Tech - nicest school in America…ha!! Not $50K - and that’s just my opinion!!! Someone the other day called it gray and dreary if I rcall. See everyone sees things differently.

I think it’s fantastic you’ve loved some and didn’t love others - that’s how you build.

That’s too funny! It is odd how different families come away with such radically different impressions, but you’re right that it emphasizes how important that campus visit is to the whole process.

Don’t discount U of Alabama. No, Tuscaloosa is not a big city, but Birmingham is 45 minutes and an easy airport. My kid is a senior Finance major and has amazing opportunities there. He loves the Tuscaloosa vibe but got to experience big cities with summer internships in Chicago and Dallas. He was pres of Real Estate Society last year and this year is pres of the Student Real Esate Fund. Both have opened doors to amazing connections. Plus your student would receive at least a $28,000 merit scholarship for that ACT score. He spent a month in Italy/Croatia this summer for an Economics class. We can’t be more pleased with what he’s accomplished there.
