Academic Dismissal appeal letter feedback

“Today I received a letter regarding being placed on Academic Dismissal”

This is a passive sentence.

Instead, I’d say:

I recently received your letter regarding academic dismissal.

irlandaise made some good suggestions for improvements.

As a side note, I suggest that you take a another serious look at where you went off track last semester. Are you working? If so are you working too many hours? Were your difficulties mainly study habits and adjustment issues or did you simply find the material hard to grasp? At this point, is a lighter workload needed?

EE is a tough major. It might be worth considering if it is the right major for you. You entered the program with a 2.7 GPA. Could it be that your grasp of the foundation knowledge is causing some difficulties? Engineering courses tend to build on what you learn in other courses. Might be worth discussing this with your advisor.

I am not trying to be harsh. Like you, I had a rough start in an engineering program. I also found Junior year to be brutal as a ME. I was able to pull it off but at times I wish I did some soul searching about the path I chose. It is easy to get caught up in the daily grind and to forget to step back and evaluate your options.

I don’t have a job.
Here are my new revisions:

Dear Academic Standing Committee,

I recently received your letter regarding academic dismissal. Please reconsider dismissing me from SUNY New Paltz. I had previously attended Rockland Community College where I had a GPA of 2.7. I realize that my academic performance for last semester was not satisfactory.

At the beginning of the semester, I intentionally faced issues commuting to and from school. Finding reliable transportation was often difficult and quickly became impossible. I have since found local housing. I also had a hard time adjusting to living on my own for the first time in a new environment. The struggles of housing, commuting, and being on my own affected my grades. Now that my living situation has stabilized, I feel that this will no longer be a factor and I will be able to fully focus on my academics.

I also recognize that my study habits need improvement. I felt that since I’m in college I had to deal with problems on my own. I now realize that that is not always the right approach. As a community college student, I didn’t fully appreciate the difference between community college and SUNY New Paltz in terms of the academic demands and the resources available to help me succeed. In the next semester, I will actively use these resources to improve my study habits to meet these demands.

My plans for academic improvement will consist of: working with my advisor to create a plan to get back on track, going to office hours to improve my understanding of the material, going to the Tutoring Center to improve my study habits, revising my notes after class, completing all assignments, visiting the library frequently, studying in groups, preparing for class and using a day planner to manage time (for studying, homework, reading, and extra help).

I am asking for a second chance to prove that I can succeed at SUNY New Paltz. I am confident that I can succeed by taking the actions I have described.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
XXXXXXXX

This sounds so much better than your first draft.

Thank you. You don’t think there’s a need for revisions?

You need to fix; " I intentionally faced issues "

I assume you meant “I faced issues” or maybe better “I had problems with commuting to and from school”

BTW, good luck. I hope everything works out.

Thank you for all your help. Please everyone pray for me.

Okay so for my final revision i have:

Yes, this is good to go. Others might suggest further tinkering but this is more than good enough. Good luck!

I think it is fine now. Good luck and update us, if you like, with whether your appeal is successful.

Thank you all for your help. I emailed two advisors from my school and they told me that my letter was good and it is exactly what the Committee is looking for.

I will definitely keep you all updated.

Good luck.

Good luck. Honestly, you seem like a really dedicated and conscientious person. Once you get back into the swing of things when you return to school I think you’ll do fine.

I just wanted to let you all know that I have been reinstated to New Paltz

Congratulations!

Now, get studying and make all the cc’ers who helped you proud!

Great news!

Woo-hoo! Make the most of this second chance. Refocus and follow the plan you outlined in the letter. Work hard. You will be fine.

@joevangundy1 Great news!

Onward to a successful semester!

Great job, Joe! Congratulations!

Congratulations!
