Acceptance Letters

Wow, that tuition figure has really gone up! I remember when my D was a freshman and it was $32,000 and we thought that was a lot! I have to laugh at the $1000 figure for personal expenses, that figure has stayed the same, and it was way too low even six years ago!

The total amount they tell you is staggering, even when you just look at tuition, room and board. However, I wasn’t expecting anything but loans so when I saw the Tisch scholarship on there it was a wonderful extra bonus.

racmom…I loved the surprise of it too as we were not counting on it and didn’t know that scholarships were a possibility back then either.

The $1000 in spending money is laughable though. I guess that stays the same on their chart every year!

Yay for Tisch scholarships!

When I called the financial aid office they said the scholarships would continue for the 4 years and that they are based on merit or need. She said the loans could increase each year (I have to read more on that subject). However, I must say, I wasn’t expecting anything in the way of scholarship so we are happy around this house today.

racmom, I had called when we got it too as I just did not expect it or know much about it and was told it was a combination of merit and need and that it was for all four years. Another surprise has been at the start of this school year, which is my D’s senior year at Tisch, three other named scholarships appeared on the statement, though smaller than the original one. I did not know that was possible either. These are nice surprises. It adds to the positive news of the acceptance; that’s for sure. And it HELPS…to pay that bill!

Does anyone know if they send out rejections and acceptances at the same time? I’m in the Philly suburbs and I know at least one person who got her “official acceptance packet” not the invite, and I’m still waiting. I hope this doesn’t mean I’m definitely rejected!

Official acceptance arrived today but is on table unopened. Large white envelope. Received the postcard invite a week or more ago.

I highly suggest you get the most $$ dorm you can afford. My son had the worst room (officially) in Hayden frosh year and it was OLD plumbing, dirty, tiny, generally gross. My older D would have turned on her heels and never come back (not an MT kid, haha!) Four guys had to keep their bathroom clean. Yeah, right. Soph year room was a little better, but view WAS amazing. Moved off campus sr year and a word to the wise, do it through NYU off campus housing office. My S ran into landlord problem with leaking ceiling and we ended up hiring a lawyer and it is still not resolved 2 years later! NYU official off campus housing office exists, and they check out the places they list, so a much better choice, in hindsight.

Thank you musicEtc. for your post… you have made a lot people happy.

Yes that is good news and in keeping with what NYU has said…that you can be accepted to NYU without having been invited to the accepted student event.

Yup… my thoughts exactly… Krisjan and Nick… did you see that? :)

Re: dorms. One thing to consider is that if you elect an apartment-style dorm that has a little kitchen, you don’t have to pay for a meal plan. My D is in Third North this year and she had a meal plan first semester which she didn’t use, so this semester, we deposited in her account the $$ that the meal plan would have cost and it is going MUCH farther.

Hey everyone! I’ve been reading up on this thread, and I’ve found it very informative, so thanks for all the great advice. However, I do have one question for you all:

I am still waiting for a word back from NYU, rejected or accepted. In the event I should be rejected, how difficult is it to transfer to Tisch’s program your sophomore year? I’ve gotten the impression from other MT threads that each school’s program is pretty specific, so each school is also wary to let in those other than undergrads into their program.

My ‘backup’ school is North Central College, and that is where I would be going next year if NYU doesn’t work out, so I don’t know if that helps in determining the answer to my question or not.

I know this question is fairly open ended, but any opinions would be much appreciated! :)

mamafox, my kid is a freshman at CAP21 and one of her very best friends at school is a young woman who transferred in after her sophomore year from the College of Arts and Sciences. The girl is now taking her acting and studio (singing, dance, etc.) classes with the CAP21 freshmen.

I don’t think transferring is ever easy, but it does happen and is possible.

Oh my goodness! I am still waiting! I was hoping that if people in my area received letters on Saturday then I would have at least gotten SOMETHING by today. I hope nothing went wrong with my application! I mean if they’re going to reject me, wouldn’t they send it out at the same time? Gosh, this is killing me! Anybody else in South Eastern PA still waiting? I live near Philly…

Still waiting in Massachusetts.

Still waiting in Oregon as well…

Does anyone think NYU would give me a hard time if I called and asked an admissions counselor for my results since they say ‘transfers’ will not hear till possibly May, but I need to send a deposit and get things ready somewhere else so I’m not left without an option. ANY advice?

Wheresmyvoice…you need to change your name to wheresmyletter! :D

Hang in there.
Admissions angst is almost over and it will be very nice when you get to the “other side.”
