Accepted to Princeton for REA (with good aid as well) but my mom thinks I'm jeopardizing my future if I don't still apply to Yale and Harvard

Your need for warm clothing may be different from another student. You may find it very damp in NJ while another student is used to it. When I moved to Oregon I was always cold because it was so damp. Within a year I was used to it. I picked my daughter up from Wyoming one Dec and the snow was swirling and twirling, but kids were heading into the gym in shorts (and probably flip flops).

True that we feel the weather differently, but it’s not particularly damp in Princeton. There has definitely been a decrease in snow the past few winters. Last year was almost no snow. Our 3 to 4 inches last night had school children cheering!

I live in the Bay Area (near Berkeley) so I’m pretty used to fog/rain! But I’m used to the 50-75 degree temperature we have year round here, so I know the winter will be hard for me.

You’ll be fine. I grew up in SoCal, and I think people in California tend to freak out about cold-weather climates. But I went to college in New England and haven’t lived in a warm-weather climate since. You’ll just want layers, hat/scarf/gloves, one decent jacket (waterproof and insulated, doesn’t have to be top of the line), and a pair of decent boots. I don’t think New Jersey gets all that many truly cold days per year (say, sub 20) You’ll get used to it very quickly.

It’s funny that right after I posted it hasn’t snowed in ages, we had a storm and another one coming tomorrow. Ice has delayed or closed things because the towns didn’t plow anything.

I dug out my parka from the back of the closet after 2 years. We were at an event as the first snow was starting and talking about how we finally got to use our winter gear! It really wasn’t needed though and I’m back to my long packable puffer. it’s 28 right now.

In any case, it’s almost time for sales on winter coats.
