@collegboundin20
yep - I am really hoping if they do cancel it, they let us know by Weds. We fly out Thursday morning and I certainly dont want to get on a plane and land only to find out it’s cancelled… People think it’s insane we are getting on a plane this week, but I feel like he needs to attend this if at all possible.
Michigan has asked students and employees returning from break, coming from China, South Korea, Italy and Iran to self-isolate for 14 days. Classes are accomodating these students by relaxing requirements.
So, keep checking on admission events.
Here is the link to their Covid-19 page. As you can see, it currently says events are on, but encouraged to think of alternative ways to deliver as well.

What we have seen at other schools is identifying a single case seems to change everything.
@Norcal1972 @collegeboundin20 Same here. S traveling from SoCal Thursday night on the Redeye. Hoping it is still on! I assume it still is as website says no cases in Michigan. Feel same way that S needs to attend if possible - he has never been to U-M!
My son’s planning a conference at Michigan and no word of canceling. If it comes up I will report something. Was just there today and so far business as usual.
I feel like the last wave is filled with waitlists/rejections. I am international with a very average SAT (710/790), applied LSA 2/1. I don’t think I have a chance. (internationals: have any of you guys received a decision 2/28?)
Correct. The last wave here on CC in prior years is about an 80% chance of WL or rejection.
I am a student here at UM currently and I have heard talks about possible alterations to the Campus tours and conference process in regards to coronavirus. Some of our classes have already been modeled to an online for the health of the student body.
@chrishudson1. My son’s a junior in engineering and no online classes yet. I am sure they will “engineer” (pun intended ?) a solution if needed.
Got an email today that UMichigan isn’t cancelling anything at this point.
- At this time, the university is proceeding with most scheduled events, classes, and operations, including athletic events.
Please note that the situation can change quickly. We will post any updates to our COVID-19 information page and in the event of cancellations or changes in programming, communicate with you directly.*
@Norcal1972 @sdmom22 So we just made the hard decision to cancel our flight tomorrow to head out for campus day. We had planned to be there by Wednesday evening, and with things changing so quickly, we didn’t want to risk it being cancelled sometime tomorrow and we were already there. Also, my son has already toured and acccepted…so this was more just for fun (and mainly for ME - since I wasn’t able to attend the last trip and see this amazing school!) We will be back out soon enough for orientation! Don’t take this as a message encouraging anyone to cancel however! Our situation was different, and if either of your kids have not yet visited…they most definitely should be there. Should all go as planned - I hope your trips are both safe and successful
@collegeboundin20 thanks for the update… what a bummer, but i totally get it… we fly out Thursday late morning and I am really hoping that we dont land in Detroit and hear it’s been cancelled. My son has been to Michigan a few times and had the tour - but this was something we thought was important for him to do, since he is still waiting on some other decisions… Michigan is probably in his top 3 and my hunch is that he will end up there. Looks like UCLA has cancelled everything up until April 10th, which means they probably wont have their Bruin Day for admits on April 11th and we were kind of waiting on that decision for him to compare… He is leaning towards UofM over UCLA, but being that we are in CA, we wanted him to seriously consider both based on the cost difference. If he had already accepted with Michigan, I would cancel too like you…
S still going from SoCal. Flying out Thursday night. I called Campus Day office and they stated it’s still on and he got email stating the same. Worst case, he goes and walks campus. Important that he sees campus and gets a vibe - it is a top choice for him as well…
I figured it’s best to go now because it seems events elsewhere in April/May are canceled so it’s even riskier to wait I think. And he absolutely needs to see the campus before he makes a commitment.
@Norcal1972 - will you be going to CA reception?
As of right now, that is still the current mindset from the university. Being a current student here though, I would not be surprised to hear big changes in regards to those events in the next couple of days after hearing what MSU just implemented.
@sdmom22. Definitely have him come down. The campus won’t be bear. Many areas to walk around the town to get a feel. Go to the Arb when he’s done with main campus. Great bus system for students etc. It’s a very walkable campus.
FWIW, my kid has said campus feels “like a ghost town.”
It’s funny since my son’s on North Campus and it always feels like that and chill.
Michigan announced that all classes are cancelled for the rest of this week, and will move to “remote or alternative formats” for the rest of the semester. And all events of 100 or more people are cancelled until at least the end of the semester. I assume that includes Admitted Student days, but they weren’t specifically mentioned. I guess check your email.
Given the rapid spread going on right now, and the delay in test kits across the country, I would NOT engage in any non-essential travel. It’s simply not worth it. Ann Arbor is shutting down. I’m pretty sure the public schools will be closing. All events are getting cancelled. Don’t come here.
