Accounting -- a hard major to get into?

Is accounting a difficult major to get into? (For top schools).
As compared to a course like psychology, which is comparatively easier and not as sought after.

At some schools it is more difficult to get into the business school as opposed to the liberal arts school, in other schools there is really no difference. You need to look at each school you are applying to.

Which top school has accounting?

Which top schools? Many of the best Accounting programs are at state schools.

HELLO THERE! I'm a south east asian student looking forward to apply to US universities for the 2016 Fall enrollment. (English as first language, though) Brand new here ><

Schools:
Berkeley/UCLA/NYU/Columbia/UChicago all RD(?)

Stats:
2280 on SAT first try, taking SAT subject tests (phy, math 2, lit) soon
school doesn’t rank students, and we don’t do GPA. About 40% though
I’m in one of the best schools (if not the best) of my country though.

EC:
Floorball school team, national 4th last year
School green council (organise charity and school events such as green festivals and wrote school policies)
ABRSM Grade 8 piano; piano teaching as well. I play 2 other undocumented instruments.
Mindsports (represented school team in othello & scrabble)
Volunteered in charity projects overseas, in Vietnam
Various volunteer work in community (street sales, house painting, etc.)
Assistant class representative
National Youth Achievement Award
Various academic awards (American math comp honor roll, australian math comp distinction) from around 3-4 years ago

I’m the most worried about my ECs and my GPA.
I don’t particularly hold a leadership title. Is this a deal breaker?
As for my stats, is 2280 a good enough score even if my GPA isn’t the best? Because my school’s exams are extremely tough and you’re expected to get Cs and below for them.
Going to put in a lot of effort into my essays and they’re going to be stellar because I have a flair for writing.

Thank you so much for reading this <3

Does Berkeley have Accounting? Is it accredited? I think there are just a couple of Calif publics that have accredited Acct’g programs.

http://college.usatoday.com/2014/09/01/top-10-u-s-colleges-for-an-accounting-degree/

DrGoogle – Perhaps UPenn (Wharton) or Cornell (Dyson), Notre Dame (Mendoza), Berkeley (Haas) qualify as just a few of the many top schools that offer accounting?

Berkeley does not offer a major or minor in accounting according to their website. They do have accounting courses.
http://groups.haas.berkeley.edu/accounting/students/

Cornell has concentration but the major is still AEM.

Same with Wharton the degree is BS in Economics with concentration in accounting.

Notre a dame does have an accounting major.

Sounds like the OP needs to do some research

In the case of Penn and Cornell a concentration is the same as a major - it is a difference of in nomenclature but not substance. And while Haas may not have an accounting major per se it has a course of study which prepares students for the CPA exam (and the website stated that “over 30% of Haas students go to work in the accounting field”) once again making the lack of a something specifically called an accounting major once again a matter of nomenclature over substance.

But alas, none of this answers the OPs question.

What is the deal with Accounting accreditation. There is a limited number of “good schools” that have their Accounting programs accredited. I don’t think any of the UC’s have an accredited program.

I think CSU Fullerton and San Diego State are the only Calif public that does. USC does and some other privates.

What’s the deal with that? And what does it mean?

My sister has an MBA in accounting from CSUF. But she’s already a CPA, so I don’t really know about accreditation. But in this field, particularly in the southern Cal, USC alumni dominate.

Thank you guys for replying. I am looking into accounting because my parents want me to get a technical degree and not a general one like psychology. Do you think that’s a good idea?

It’s not a technical degree. I used to be in this major and then I changed to engineering. I’m glad I did because my sister has been earning very little money with long hours until only recently to contracting. Long hours with no OT is the norm. You have to like the work too.

? Accounting isn’t a technical degree.

You better have a chat with your parents about majors and such. If they expect you to major in some sort of STEM major, then Accounting won’t be acceptable.

She doesn’t mean STEM. She means something something that isn’t general, like architecture or law. In my country, accounting is a rather prestigious degree. If I’m looking for something finance related but not too general, accounting is good, right? I actually wanted to take psychology

You mean you go back to work in your country.
