ACT vs Competition tradeoff?

Hey guys,

I was recently made aware that I have a possible chance of being able to go to another country for a history knowledge competition for about 2 weeks. However, if I go, that means forfeiting perhaps what is going to be my last shot at ACT before submitting applications. However, I am able to take the SAT again. Should I go if given the chance? It is really really selective ( only 3 from US will go).

Which would give me a greater leverage on my app?

a higher ACT or the selective competition?

Thanks guys,
I’ve really been dying from trying to decide on my own.

What’s your ACT/SAT score? What colleges are you aiming at?

If you’re OK with your ACT scores, go to the competition. If you’re not happy with your ACT scores, but are OK with your SAT scores, go to the competition. If you are not happy with either, study like heck for the SAT and go to the competition.
Unless your dream school is entirely stats based, the competition will look much better on your app than high scores.

Yeah, studying the heck for the SAT is exactly what I had in mind. If I don’t get selected for competition I figured I would just study for ACT to try my luck a bit. But yeah, I’d really like to go because it looks like it’ll be fun, in addition to looking good on app. I’m aiming for a few reaches-upenn, washu, uchicago but that’s it. WashU is top choice however, the main thing I’m worried about is that it seems more focused on scores…Thanks for your encourgement!
