Yeah so i’m almost done with my 1st semester and i still hate college! all my friends went to different colleges and they’re having a blast, yet im miserable. My parents told me in the begining of the summer if i didnt like school i could transfer after the 1st semester, now they’re tellin me i have to stay a year…knowing them they’re never gonna let me leave and keep pushing back the years til i graduate…is anyone else having a hard time adjusting still or did i just totally pick the wrong college?

well what exactly do you not enjoy about the college?

study hard, get good grades your first year, and transfer if you are still unhappy

well 1st of all this was by no means my first choice to go to school…i was just told to come here cuz it had a “better name” (big mistake)…but anyway i know ur suppose to study in college but darnit i study all the dang time and still make C’s and D’s…while everyone else is out having fun (maybe the college is too hard for me or maybe im still adjustin to the workload) i’m worried i wont be able to get in grad/med school with these grades…also i havent really met anyone i honestly truely like to hangout with all the time…dont get me wrong im polite, friendly and do all that small talk stuff but its still not the same…and yes i’ve tried to meet ppl i did some sport teams and was in a few clubs but i hated goin to them cuz i hardly had time and had to rush around campus…so basically i’d like a little more free time for enjoyment

pre-med classes are usually more difficult than most majors. also, college can be a big adjustment (esp. depending on the difficulty of your highschool) do you have a roommate? how are the kids on your hall? do they leave their doors open? does the school sponser any events? also – go to basketball games and sit in the student section.

your sn is “soccergurl”, maybe your college has intramurals? i would just try to stay active. go to the rec, do hw in a social lounge, etc. you never know where you will meet ppl. once you have a base of friends, it is very easy to meet their friends, etc.

Transfer to Ohio State or another flagship state school.

soccergurl, what school do you attend?

There’s a few things going on here. You don’t have time for fun, you don’t like the people you HAVE met, and your grades aren’t good. Whew! No wonder you want a change.

I’m just going to address academic because if you solve that one you’ll have more time for fun activities and meeting friends. First off, evaluate HOW you’re studying. Are you in the library or other quiet place free of distractions? Is studying solid concentration on a subject or is it mixed in with IM, doodling, etc? Many people think they’re studying for hours but when they look at how much time is actually spent studying they’re surprised.

The next thing to look at is study skills. A lot of people do well in HS because classes are geared towards a lower level. At college you need to step up your game. This means learning effective habits for taking notes, reading different types of texts, reviewing material, etc. Fortunately there is a book out there that explains how to do these things, a book I think every college student should own. Its called “What Smart Students Know” by the cofounder of the Princeton Review, on of the leaders in teaching test-taking strategies. It lays out in a clear manner how to study for various types of classes, all the tips and tricks that people have figured out thru hard knocks on their own just handed to you.

BTW, are you taking advantage of all the resources available to you? Have you been going to office hours for your profs and TAs? Visited the study skills center at college? Taken advantage of free tutoring offered in intro-level classes if available? Set up study groups in your classes? Talked to an advisor?

Let me add 2 final observations. First, its unlikely college is too hard for you. A lot of kids face the same problems because they have never been taught how to study effectively. You can learn this, so don’t give up hope yet. Second, there are a few important things to know about going to a large state school they never get around to telling you. Most important is that there are lots of people out there who are willing to help you, but you have to make the first move. Profs, advisors, tutors, etc. are out there for you but unlike a small town where everyone knows who you are and will offer help when they see you need it, at a large state school you’re a number in the crowd. People want to help, they really do, but the way it works is if you want help you have to go ask for it.

You are correct to be worried. I suspect that you need to meet with an advisor and get a plan to take some classes you can do well in and spread the “load” of courses for med school over a greater period of time. You are sunk if you have these low scores…sunk. You need to make a plan that works for you. Many kids think that a particular major is required for application so med school but in fact that is not correct. All you need are the science courses to get you through.

college…my highschool was pretty much a joke (the teachers i still keep in contact with tell me this)…my roomate and i arent friends but we’re polite to each other, i have a suite style dorm so its sorta hard to meet people unless you just randomly walk into other ppl’s suite…and i study in the union, lounge or the library…

king i go to unc

mike and hazmat i have went to a few workshops they have on campus, i did try to contact my advisor but he wasnt much help (im guessin its becuase im undeclared and i reckon my school doesnt really care about the undecided kids…as of right now he messed up my schedule to where im not even a full time student next semester when i went to go get help!) and i’m def going to try the tutoring thing next semester. and mike i agree with you on the small town thing…im from an extremely small town and my parents had to tell me the same thing so i’d go seek help in the 1st few weeks of school…hopefully it’ll pay off more next semester

You need to be more assertive about getting an advisor to sit down with you and get an academic plan. The fact that you are undecided is not a valid justification for poor quality or no help. Many schools don’t require a student to declare a major until the end of Soph or beginning of Jr. year.

If medical school is your dream you need to get someone to sit down with you and walk you through the 8 semesters and 3 summer sessions you have available to complete your work, take your MCAT and apply to med schools. Getting a plan will help you see the end game…the reason for your choosing to take a particular course in a specific term.

Many kids come from poor quality high schools…you are lucky to be at a good college and an adjustment is to be expected. Make the most of this opportunity and continue to ask for help…until you get some quality help.

Oh yeah, I’m really hating my university as well, I’m getting very poor grades too, I really hope I can improve a lot next semester, I wish I could just write this one off! Uggghh…

Hey guys, hang in there. It’s hard, I know. Just put forth the effort into what the above posters suggested and you will eventually do well in the end.

I’m having trouble too, I don’t really like hanging out with some of my “friends” and I am having a hard time in some of my classes, mainly because I can’t concentrate because I keep thinking about all the other things bothering me…I guess we aren’t alone! There is still second semester to fix everything :)

This first semester has just been just crappy and downright awful for me. I want to write off this whole semester. I just don’t feel like working here, I’m always finding myself procrastinating and wasting my life, arrggh, I need help.

Only one person who can fix all of that and that is yourself. It’s tough but over time you will definitely notice some changes.

I feel exactly the same way as the above posters. I went to school far away form home so I can’t just go home and take a break when I feel like it. My school is so stressful, I’m getting like B’s and C’s in everything, and I study a lot. I also have totally lost my motivation, which was really high in HS.

Mightmeals and every other poster that feels this way, i concur on the loss of motivation, some days it gets disheartening that something i used to love and enjoyed spending time doing (learning) has become a chore and a bottomless pit where no matter how hard i try its not good enough, but there is a bright light at the end of my tunnel…transfering this january, and while some may say its a hasty judgement, i dont, because there are so many things that are to much to accpet here, there are things to do if you arent a partier, but they are slim to nil, and paying 40,000 per year shouldnt go to waste being unhappy! but, to all yall that are staying at your present college for next semester, good luck! a lot of college activities are winding down for the semester, so its hard to get in now, which stinks, but finals are immensly time consuming! (dont we all know)…but, regardless, good luck with finals and with making 2nd semester strides better than the first one. cheers to 2 weeks!
