I got a call from a student in the admission office yesterday congratulating me and asking if I had any questions. Did that happen to anyone else?
I got a call from a dean, but my friends got calls from students. I was very confused because I didn’t know I had been accepted yet!
anyone from NC heard anything yet? starting to worry…
@anothermuggle haha I dont want anybody to feel that way. I knew from the beginning of my high school and college career that my GPA and Sat scores were never going to be as good as my peers, so I tried do as much soft skill activities as I could. Though search and rescue and my medical internship with the US Navy, I found my love for emergency medicine, and I am actually planning on being part of TEMS if I end up attending Tulane. TEMS was the MAIN reason I applied to Tulane, and their EMS volunteer program is amazing. Even though I am planning on studying political science, I want to do something in my life that will help me better serve my community, law enforcement, fire department, definitely public sector. I am actually going to enlist in the Navy this summer on a reserve contract, and go to school at the same time. My entire application was about my dedication to serving the community. This was the only thing that could offset my horrible sat, act, and GPA
You pretty much nailed it. My degree from Tulane is in chemistry and that is what I was pursuing as I went to grad school. Despite the fact that I was at a top 5 grad program in chemistry, I found myself not enjoying the very long hours in the lab. Note to all: Going for a Ph.D. in a subject, or at least in a science, is nothing like studying it as an undergrad. As an undergrad I loved the research I did, and the publications that resulted from my ideas and work at Tulane are something that I am exceedingly proud of all these years later. After a few years in grad school, I still loved chemistry, and I really enjoyed teaching as well, but I found the very long hours in the lab and the relative solitariness of the work to be incompatible with my personality. I found myself looking more and more at opportunities on the business side of science, so I went that direction instead, getting my MBA while working my first “real” job. Hence I became a “fallen chemist”, succumbing to the dark side of business.
On a more serious note, the two together made for an excellent career with lots of opportunities. I would always advise those interested in business to at least consider a second major in something “real”, by which I mean some area that forms the foundation for a business. It can range from the dream of wanting to own an art gallery or auction house (art + business) to science/engineering and even to history (museum curator, historical tours company, etc.). I think there are lots of ways to potentially combines ones passion for a certain area of knowledge, no matter how seemingly obscure, with ways to make a living and even prosper.
Congrats on your acceptance. Fantastic perseverance and amazing energy level!
That had to be Dean Carole Haber of the School of Liberal Arts. She was my D’s Dean as well, and while I only met her a couple of times, she always impressed my as being totally dedicated to the students and a staunch advocate for the values of a liberal arts school and education. Best of luck to you.
Thank you so much @fallenchemist! I guess my question is do you think I should apply to the Paul Tulane Award? I know my stats are not that good for DHS, but maybe I can get the PT, I already have one of the essays finished. Also, what do you think about the community service scholarship, is it difficult to attain? My entire high school career was basically dedicated to community service, so I believe I would be a great candidate. Thank you so much!
phone calls? oh my gosh, seriously??? Just an email, or a letter, or a deferral or a denial(although that would make me super disappointed. I really would like to go to Tulane and am hoping that the admission people can feel that in my essays/application
I don’t think you have a shot at the PTA. The stats generally looked for are quite a bit higher than yours. The Community Service Fellowship, however, is another story. Certainly you should try for that. It is difficult to attain, although I have no clue how many apply for the 15 fellowships awarded. Again, stats matter but naturally ones record of community service is weighted a lot more than for awards like the DHS or PTA. So might as well give that a try!
Just out of curiosity, does the Navy help with your educational costs at all? Are you eligible to join NROTC, or is that out for you because of your experience already?
My D just got a beautiful envelope with an acceptance from Tulane! We weren’t expecting it so early, so it was super exciting! Plus a Founder’s Award merit scholarship!! Will start planning our trip to New Orleans to visit the school
Fantastic, @ODKmom. Congrats to the entire family, with a little extra for your D.
So two people from my school got their acceptances today and they applied a lot later than I did. I probably got deferred right?
@fallenchemist I wish I got something from the Navy for all the internships and stuff I have done with them! My internships were mainly just for me to get a feel in a learning environment what it takes to do what they do, as well as work along side them for experience. I am not applying to NROTC because I have no desire to become an officer, and my dream job in the Navy is an enlisted only job. Hospital Corpsmen are the field and emergency medicine specialists in the Navy. The Navy does have benefits for college and loan repayment, but I am going to have to research more about those. I am hopefully going to do some sort of program for the government where they would supplement my college tuition and fees, while I would have to give a certain amount of service years back to them in return. Thanks for the support and input, and I am definitely going to apply for the Community Service Award now!
@fallenchemist I could have written the same exact post about being a chemist. I received my degree in chemistry first, attended grad school for 2 years, was sick of spending long hours in the lab, got married and after 3 years went back to get my doctorate in pharmacy. Better pay and more marketable when I started.
@TULover1352 Don’t worry, that could just be when admissions happened to pick up their applications. When others get their decisions can’t be accurately be used as a predictor of your decision, and even if it could, it’s been less than a day since they got their decisions. There’s less than 2 weeks until all decisions are out, so at this point there’s not much point speculating on what will happen. Hope for the best, be ready to accept the worst (which really isn’t that bad since there are no denials EA).
@TULover1352 same thing is happening to me. I’m just constantly refreshing and hoping for the best! good luck
I got in like a month ago but it was expected because all students in Louisiana get guaranteed acceptance with atleast 28 act and like 3.5 gpa.
Does anyone know when deferrals start coming out?
I posted a little earlier- student from California, 33 ACT, around 3.5 GPA (had a 3.0, then a 3.2, then 4.0 jr and sr years), and tons of demonstrated interest. I can’t think about anything besides getting into Tulane- can hardly focus on homework or family or anything. It’s one of my top choices and every single friend of mine who has applied has gotten in- even ones with lower scores/grades/no “Why Tulane?” essay. I applied way back on October 15th. My college counselor told me to email my rep to make sure nothing was lost/needed to be re-sent. This was a week ago; she still has not replied. My counselor and I are planning on calling the admissions office tomorrow to make sure nothing was lost. What should I do? These have been the most stressful 49 days of my life.
@rj1997 First, take a deep breath. Wait and see what you find out from the phone call tomorrow.
