@fallenchemist ok thanks. it was actually kind of dissapointing to still see the same message and not a deferral because i kind of just want to rip the band aid off already haha.
@fallenchemist - Should we expect that there will be more deferrals than acceptances sent out at this point?
@sig333 Oh yes, certainly. Tulane acceptance rate overall this year, given the increase in applications, will probably be around 22-25%. So even if the EA round tends to run higher, say 35% (which is probably too high but the point is the same) and since the only decision besides yes at this stage is deferral and finally since they saved all the deferrals until now, there have to be a lot more, maybe 6:1 or so.
@slg333 Jeff’s words from the blog:For many of you, that decision may have been “The Admission Committee has chosen to defer final action on your application until our regular review periods this spring.”
big shock
out of state
UW GPA: 3.9
GPA: 4.6
superscore SAT: 2040
went to visit last spring, met my admissions counselor near my hometown twice. Tulane has been my top choice for years and many other students from my school with lower grades in scores have gotten in.
can’t figure out what it could be just super super shocked
anyone else have a similar position?
@soccr43 read the post in #819. Go to the blog post.
Now just because someone has lower stats doesn’t mean anything. Maybe their EC’s were better as well as their essays. People on CC can’t understand that. Grades and test scores are not everything in regards to admission decisions. Do not put others down because you did not get accepted so far. There is still hope for you in RD.
I am only going to post this once because it’s the message nobody wants to hear, and of course i can’t be talking about them. But the reason, or at least a frequent reason, a deferral defies all seeming logic is that there is a red flag in the file that we cannot see, and sometimes even the student doesn’t know happened. It doesn’t have to be a disciplinary thing from the high school or elsewhere, which the student would know. It could be a rec that was more tepid than you realize. Or your essay may have a lot of spelling/grammar issues (I see those more than I would like in ones where I am requested to look at them). Or in another communication with admissions, you used a “form letter” you developed and forgot to change the school name. Again, happens more than you would think.
It may be none of these things, or one of dozens of other things. Don’t drive yourself nuts over it, what is done is done. Just follow Jeff’s advice, and be extra careful in all communications. It’s a good life lesson anyway, because the same will apply as you try for internships, special programs, grad/professional school, and of course jobs.
@fallenchemist - Would love your thoughts on my post #798
Oh right, another one I got torn away from. Tulane has two types of aid, merit and need based. The need based, of course, requires the FAFSA and CSS forms. Then Tulane awards a package, assuming you qualify, that is a combination of grants, Federal loans, private loans, and often work study. The forms are due by Feb 15, and the packages usually go out mid to late March. I assume Tulane is talking about all the forms of aid when they quote that number for an average.
I don’t think you were putting anyone down. You stats seem excellent! I’m surprised you were deferred.
I’m not entirely sure a GPA matters all that much. I think what matters more is the competitiveness of the high school, your test scores and what type of classes you chose to take.
I got deferred today
2240 SAT
36 ACT
3.85 UW gpa
I did the optional essays , recs and had a one on one info session with my regional admissions officer. She seemed pretty impressed at the time , but I guess not.
@sahar1811 that is definitely surprising. I would say it is because they want to protect their yield and they see you as unlikely to attend with your high scores.
I hope that is the reason why I was deferred
I’d thought I’d shown enough interest for them to know they weren’t a safety.
My daughter was deferred today. We use a private counselor and through her I learned about several other deferrals as well, some were quite shocking (my daughter’s deferral was not shocking, though a little surprising). The theory being that they don’t want to accept students who are overqualified. So they seem to be deferring a lot more students than they used to. If your daughter is deferred and really wants to attend, then she should write to her admission counselor and tell her that, so as to improve her chances of being accepted in April.
Well I thought I would weigh in, feel like I am beginning to be a pro at “waiting” and patience. I have not yet heard anything. I think I am an average student with good test scores, good AP scores and ECs that are interesting
Again, I am still looking to read responses from Manhattan applicants. I find solace in knowing that within a week I will know one way or the other.
@nycapp Now 3 people from my school have heard. Still nothing. My counselor said she’s been emailing our rep about something else so she’s going to ask/try to see what’s going on. I’ll keep ya posted.
Deferred
34 ACT
4.0 UW, 4.32 W GPA
lots of extracurriculars and leadership, submitted three letters of rec and did “why Tulane” essay
from out of state
Tulane was not my top, but I’m surprised I didn’t get admitted and I am kinda worried there was something wrong with my application that kept me from admission
All the applications are free.
My son was admitted. He got a letter two days ago advising that he was awarded a Presidential Scholarship and admitted to the honors program. He is thrilled; we are thrilled! Oops, I guess I should edit with stats (new user here:)). 34 ACT, 96.09 UW GPA; 97.31 weighted, all APs and honors. 800 math SAT subject test, 760 Physics, and two others I can’t remember in the 700s. AP scholar with distinction, NHS, varsity athlete, 3 years of university lab research, trilingual (Spanish/French/English).
Hi Everyone on this forum. I just got accepted with a 27 ACT and a 3.3 weighted GPA. I’m from MA.
