ADMISSION DECISIONS FALL 2016 (CLASS OF 2020)

fallenchemist…do you know if Tulane will give merit scholarships to deferred students who wind up being accepted in the spring or will all of the merit money be gone by then or go to students who were not deferred.

@Theaterdancer

Merit money is distributed to RD applicants, whether RD by choice or because of deferment, the same as to EA accepted students. If you have the stats and they take you in that round, you should get the same merit scholarship you would have.

But weren’t you already accepted?

I was!!! One of my close friends was deferred and devastated. Tulane is a top choice but she needs merit money to attend. She does not belong to college confidential, did not want to post, so I asked for her…and your answer made her so happy and now she has an account. I knew you would be helpful as always!!! Thank you for both of us.

No problem, it was just a little confusing. You can see why we don’t allow people to share accounts, although technically that isn’t what you were doing. Glad she has come aboard! Hopefully the pieces fall into place for her so that you two can attend together. Clearly that is what the two of you want.

@fallenchemist im sure this has been asked before but are the partial merit scholarships mostly based on numbers?(aka gpa, rank and test scores) thats the trend I see on CC.

@X22011 I would love that info if you get it. Tickets are affordable now, so I want to jump on it. We will fly out at either 4 or 6 pm on Monday–D is not ok with missing 2 days of HS.

I found the same question asked last year on cc. It looks like we should be fine leaving as late as possible on Monday. So, I went ahead and booked a flight home that leaves at 715pm. We plan on arriving in New Orleans late Friday night or early Saturday morning to spend the day enjoying New Orleans. Interesting, my daughter didn’t want to leave Tuesday am either because she was worried about missing school too. I think, I would pick the flight that leaves at 6 because on last years thread there was mention that it was nice to have extra time to check things out on campus a bit more.

My daughter applied ea still has not heard website states still reviewing, is it possible she can still be accepted or does this mean it’s a deferral

@fallenchemist I was accepted but didn’t get any merit money. Tulane is my top choice but I need financial aid to go. Do you know what the average amount of need based aid they give out to a person?

@X22011 @Booajo

Yes, 6 PM and 7:15 PM are excellent times to fly out. I would say the earliest flight to book out should be around 4, but as you point out those extra 2 hours or so give you more flexibility. It really depends on how much your child would like to sit in on one or two classes. I’ll talk more about that as the time gets closer.

@zd4589

Yes, nearly entirely based on numbers, the ones you mentioned. For rank you can substitute schedule rigor. Too many schools no longer rank, but in the end it is about the same thing.

@fallenchemist
If we haven’t heard yet should we assume you are being deferred

@vivalastool97

Well, of course the average absolute number is irrelevant, what matters is how much they give you compared to your actual need. The latest stats I have seen are that Tulane meets 95% of demonstrated need, on average. In many cases they meet 100%, but for various reasons there are a few cases where they don’t, and that pulls down the average. Not that 95% is bad of course, but it does sometimes force people to take out additional loans.

The main thing is that this is one of those areas where averages don’t mean much. The main thing is that you have to just see what your package looks like. There are just too many variables. Not just how much of your need they met, but how much is in grants and work study versus loans.

@Deedee22
Nope. Last year there were acceptances right up until and including the last day. Are the odds less? Probably, but mostly it is just still if they have gotten to your application or not. As I have said before, sometimes the ace is at the bottom of the deck. Still an ace. Or should I have used queen??

Thank you

***advice to those looking to apply to college next year: don’t EVER do an activity or join a club just for a college application; do something you’re passionate about and you will succeed! try something new and different that you’ve never considered doing in the past! high school is your time to explore yourself and your interests in the safety of your parents’ nest :slight_smile:

okay @fallenchemist can you help me??? i’ve gone through almost every post on this forum and I still don’t know what to think. I applied November 15th. I have a 31/ 33 ACT, 3.86 weighted GPA, top 10% of my class, and a huge focus on extracurriculars and community service.

In my application, I spoke on the resume about how I stayed at tulane this summer for a community service project, I’ve emailed my admission counselor many times before, I’ve visited campus, and my why tulane was thought out. What is happening here??? I’m getting more than nervous at this point.

@X22011 is the Top scholars weekend only for Presidential awards? My D was accepted but not that scholarship, but we need to visit still… Looking forward to a visit there!

The letter says the Top scholars weekend is for those invited into the Honors Program, but the letter goes on to mention Destination Tulane for everyone admitted to Tulane. They sound pretty similar. There are lots of dates in March and April.

@twicemama

For those invited to the Honors Program, which is all Presidential recipients and most if not all Premier recipients. Not sure if any Distinguished Scholar recipients get invited or not, but it would have said so in the letter.
