Does anyone have advice? And do you know any possible reasons why I was deferred? (Perhaps my lack of interest, as I have not visited? I am not sure)

@fallenchemist

Are admissions decisions sent out on Saturdays and Sundays, or do I have to wait until Monday to hear back from Tulane? I apologize if you have already received this question earlier in the thread.

@rosietherivetr

It’s a long thread, so that’s OK. Yes, I imagine this is the last weekend they will be working for awhile. I would expect decisions to keep coming though this weekend.

Has there ever been data showing the % of deferred students that eventually got accepted? Based on the stats we’re seeing posted here, I have to believe that’s a very good number. A better % would be if we knew those that then mailed, emailed, called, visited ie showed “interest” after deferment. I’d be nervous if apply RD seeing the talented students in the pool from deferment. Good luck everyone.

How much does visiting help your chances if you have been deferred?

@TXDad56

I don’t know if Tulane even calculates that for themselves, but certainly it isn’t shared. It probably is a fair number if students follow Jeff’s advice and show interest the right way, but a fair number probably drop out after being accepted ED somewhere else. Some of the students complaining about being deferred have also admitted they have gotten in ED at WUSTL, Columbia, and a few others. That indicates to me it is quite reasonable to assume that that the actual number of students that applied to Tulane as a safety and got in ED elsewhere is quite significant. I thought the one person that sounded so shocked and hurt about being deferred when they had gotten accepted elsewhere and said flat out that Tulane was a safety and they had showed no interest is typical of many of these students. Their egos are bruised, because they are looking at the world through a self-absorbed lens. I think it tells the rest of us that Tulane knows what it is doing a large majority of the time on this issue.

Bottom line, I agree with you that these high stat students, if they can convince Tulane that there is at least a 50-50 chance they would pick them if accepted stand a great chance of being let in. I also think they have to use their intelligence and creativity to figure out how to do that, and also to only do it if they really are interested, and not just to assuage their egos.

@Classof2020

It certainly helps if your visit helps confirm that Tulane is a school you would like to attend. If so, and you can then combine it with a nice followup note that says why in some detail, it should be effective. I suppose more effective would be to visit the campus, completely affirm that is where you want to be, and walk into admissions ready to put down a deposit if they update your status. I wonder if anyone has ever tried that? Especially for a high stat student, I would think that could be very effective.

Anyway I remind everyone again of Jeff’s blog. http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/2011/12/ive-been-deferred-now-what.html

@fallenchemist I applied on November 5th, and I still haven’t gotten a reply. My friend who applied ten days later than me heard back a week ago already. Is there a trend that Tulane first send out the acceptances, then deferral and last rejection?

my DD applied at the beginning of october after visiting and loving Tulane. she has a 4.27 W and 3.9 UW and 30 ACT our counselor at school said it should be her “safety” school and she hasnt heard a thing. All of her friends were accepted awhile ago and about 5 were deferred Thursday. Is it possible she is being rejected? I heard 125 kids from her school applied. She has tons of activities and community service as well as varsity sports and the lead in the musical all 4 years. Anyone know whats going on?

@shulydiasun @elised48 If you read back through older messages in this thread, or even through last year’s EA thread, you’ll see that Tulane has not in the past rejected anybody at this stage. Here at the end of EA/SCEA there are many deferrals to the RD round, but there are also still acceptances. @fallenchemist has reminded everyone that they are not keen to accept people using Tulane as a safety, they’d rather have students who are thrilled to attend. If you are deferred and you can sincerely convince them you’d be thrilled to attend you have a chance. Given the increase in applications the overall acceptance rate likely will be less than last year’s 25% – that’s approaching lottery school odds, where it seems almost random who among the high stats kids get accepted. Hang in there, it isn’t over yet!

]Why you think you were accepted:
[*]General Comments: Really happy to have gotten in here with a Presidential Scholarship ($32,000 each year), as this likely wouldn’t be a viable option without it. I wasn’t even sure that I was going to apply until just before the deadline since it looked so expensive and I hadn’t even looked into or researched it very much. However, FallenChemist was right about saying that their unexpected, generous financial aid has now catapulted it to a top choice of mine. Now that I’ve really started to look into Tulane, I’m pretty impressed and it seems like a unique atmosphere. I’ve never been here, but New Orleans seems like a great, lively city and I can’t wait to visit next spring. I’d be happy to be at a place where I could wear shorts in February too! I’ve so far gotten into IU, OSU, and SMU with decent merit awards, but Tulane is definitely going to be among my Top 3 or so of places to attend when it comes down to decision time.

If Tulane checked how often I open the Gibson portal a day they would probably think I’m insane. Sigh, getting less confident with every passing day.

Does anyone know why Tulane only defers and does not give out denials during EA/SCEA? I mean I love that it gives us a second chance but just wondering.

I don’t really have even a guess on that. I mean I can understand for this situation we talk about every year for high stat students. It isn’t that Tulane doesn’t want those students per se, they just want to know they really fit and so wants to give them plenty of time to show it. Why they wouldn’t go ahead and deny students that are well below the normal acceptance range I don’t even have a theory.

Haha it’s honestly been eating at me since I got deferred and tulane is def one of my top choices. I guess I didn’t show enough interest though bc tulane wasn’t my top choice until I did the why tulane. Now that I’ve gotten deferred it’s making me want to be accepted even more… @fallenchemist do you think I would be allowed to rewrite my why Tulane essay and send it to my admissions counselor?? sorry if you’ve answered this already! oh and congrats to everyone who’s been admitted!!

I meant Tulane wasn’t my top choice until after submitting my app @fallenchemist

Got it, @blueandyellow

I don’t think anyone has asked about submitting a rewritten Why Tulane. But yes, if you have something new to say that you think is persuasive, by all means.

Hmm, I’ve been thinking about the same thing with the Why Tulane, since it’s moved up quite a bit on my list and when I wrote it the first time I was kind of rushing because I really wanted to get my first app turned in. I already sent in a letter that essentially had a Why Tulane response embedded in it, so hopefully they’ll read that, and it seems a little redundant to do another one on top of that.

Really relieved and happy, our daughter was accepted on Gibson Tuesday and then today got her letter with the presidential award. We are beyond thrilled and my daughter can’t wait to attend. We feel very fortunate she was accepted and got the scholarship especially with the apparent high number of deferrals this year. We plan to fly down for the first Top Scholars weekend March 6-7. Does anyone know when the day’s activities wrap up on Monday? We are trying to decide if we should get a late flight back Monday evening or just wait and return home Tuesday am. Good luck to everyone still waiting or deferred. This whole process has been a lot more stressful than we had imagined. Luckily we were able to have a nice family and friend celebration tonight.

Right, it doesn’t have to be titled “Why Tulane Part Deux” or whatever. They know what your intentions are.
