@usualhopeful she already contacted her admissions counselor, and had before the decision went out as well. He never even responded! She heard back from an INTERN in the office who said she’d forward her emails to him but that was it. I guess he is hard to reach because he does all the international advising plus Florida. So he’s probably out of the country a lot. Yes, very frustrating because I’m assuming getting deferred puts you out of the running for scholarships and the Paul Tulane award she applied for.
@fallenchemist what about consideration for scholarships and the Paul Tulane award? Aren’t deferred students out
of the running for that? I know my daughter wants NO PART of the Ivy scene. She hated when we visited a few, and that’s a nice way of putting it. She found them very pretentious and she is a very down to earth kid who wants to be around real, down to earth people. However, she’s also someone who will need a scholarship to attend Tulane. So, regardless of how much she loves it, if she can’t be eligible now for scholarships she won’t be able to attend.
@fbhsmom, I’ve seen post from fallenchemist stating Merit Scholarships are available for all accepted students EA to RD. I can’t remember about PT but since you applied, I’m assuming you still will be considered. FC will have the facts for sure. (PS, congrats to your D on Columbia, that’s a great achievement)
Absolutely not! There have been DHS winners in the past that got deferred initially. I assume they followed Jeff’s advice and convinced Tulane of their sincerity. I see no reason the PTA would be any different. Same for partial merit awards. They would award that on the same basis as if they had been convinced initially. What sense does it make for them to acknowledge that a student is serious about Tulane, admit them, and then treat them differently and make it almost certain they won’t come? They would just be driving their yield down for no reason.
Your D sounds a bit like mine. She was not impressed with the Ivy atmosphere as she was picking up on the vibe either. Since each situation is pretty unique at this stage, let me PM you tomorrow or Sunday. It makes no sense to get into details here.
I’m really not sure what I could have done better. I emailed the rep, met her in person, put thought into the Why Tulane essay, and have stats that put me into the same bracket as some people who got the presidential scholarship here. I’m going to email her again to say I’m still interested, but anyone else know what I could possibly do?
@txdad13 Thanks for the info – but it wasn’t my daughter who got into Columbia, just to clarify lol.
DS received his letter today - presidential award ($32k/year.)
NMSF, 4.0 UW (no weighting), 2300+ SAT, 35 ACT, lots of ECs. He also has taken a ton of college math. We’re on the west coast.
I know he applied for the DHS. Guess we will be waiting and seeing on that- he already had a full tuition to Pitt and applied for their chancellors scholarship. I think Tulane may be his first choice, but I also think he’d choose Pitt if their overall cost is lower.
Congratulations to him, and of course to the family as well. It’s nice to know you are probably facing college for him with at least tuition/fees fully paid for, isn’t it? I am sure his DHS project was strong, so I think he has a very competitive shot for that. Might even be in the mix for the Stamps. Keep us informed.
Got my letter & received a grand total of $0 in scholarships
I wasn’t expecting anything, seeing as I’m not quite ivy-level, but it really hurts having to cross Tulane off of my list. Upside? SMU threw $80k my way, not bad :D!
Thanks again to @fallenchemist for helping me, I made it much farther than I expected to.
I got deferred with a 3.54 weighted GPA and a 31 ACT composite (35 E, 35 R, 29 S, 26 M)
Yeah, I know you were totally prepared for that, but still I know there is that faintest hope. But that is fantastic news about SMU! Congratulations!
