Lack of reports makes me wonder if these are lumped in with the rest of the financial package and students may not be notified specifically when they receive one.

@usualhopeful For completeness, my daughter received the Distinguished award with $27K. Please see post #895 for stats.

@FriendofMax Thank you! I hope I didn’t miss too many posts. Also, congrats to your daughter!

I was accepted a few days ago with Distinguished Scholar Award (27K/yr). I just sent in my application in on the 15th of january, crazy fast response time. 32 ACT/1420 M/CR SAT, 740 Math 710 lit 710 history SAT 2, 3.9 UW and 4.33 W GPA

Do you all hear your admission decision by checking the portal or by email (or both)?

@Lt2020

You only hear by email if your admissions person does that on their own, which is fairly unusual. It almost always means checking the portal or being surprised by a letter in the mail.

Thanks. It appears from this thread that they send out admission notifications on a rolling basis. Do you know when most of them will be out.

Not officially rolling, more like randomly. Most won’t go out until March, and be fairly spread out through March until the glut of denials and wait lists at the very end of March.

I applied EA in October, kept checking my portal, and found out that I was deferred until April. I kept checking, however, and around mid-January I received my acceptance, and then a week letter got a letter saying I was a Premier scholar (honors program and $30k a year)… @Lt2020 keep the faith… everything seems rather random

This is going to sound like an odd question, but on my application, for the activity description of the Multicultual Club I was in, I accidentally wrote that we promoted “cultural appropriation” on campus when I meant appreciation. Appropriation means taking something for one’s own use (such as a cultural tradition), typically without the owner’s permission. This mistake may put me in a bad light. Should I email my admissions counselor to tell them it was an accident?

@caliapplicant I would. Cultural appropriation is often seen as mocking a culture or taking the culture as using it without cultural context to make it less sacred and more pop culture.

I doubt it will make a difference between a rejection/acceptance but it is something that will raise eyebrows.

Yes, absolutely tell them in a case like that, especially given the recent campus unrest in several places over exactly that topic. You can make a little fun of yourself at the same time, like telling them it was a brain fart or whatever. They are regular people, they understand this happens.

Sorry if I had not done enough research on the question I’m about to ask; I couldn’t really find it (or maybe I did and I just didn’t understand it.) So the “presidential” and “distinguished” awards are separate from the need-based aid, right?

And also, does Tulane place more emphasis on standardized test scores or more emphasis on your GPA and your selection of classes over the course of 4 high school years?

@clichescreenname

The merit awards are separate from the need based FA, except in the sense that if you get a merit award from Tulane they of course count it as an asset. But getting merit is irrespective of any need. Getting a merit award does not reduce your expected amount to pay " out of pocket" (EFC) except in the case where the merit award is so large that the remainder would be less than your EFC. Quick example. Let’s say Tulane has a total cost to attend of $65,000 per year. Let’s also say the you get a $30,000 merit award. Obviously that leaves $35,000 to be paid. If your family has an EFC equal to or greater than that, there will be no need based FA. If the EFC is less, say $15,000, Tulane will offer a need based package equal to or very close to $20,000. Tulane doesn’t promise to meet 100% of need, but they usually do.

I think Tulane is pretty much down the middle on test scores and GPA/course rigor as factors. They might lean a little towards test scores, just my feeling. But it is really essentially a tie.

Should I continue to check the portal daily, or will they email me when they release my decision?

Deferred, then accepted today sometime between noon and midnight today.

@violintigress they’re not going to email you. I would just keep checking

@jgalls Congrats! did you send a letter of continued interest?

@SnapApp nope, but i applied for the DHS so spending time and submitting the project shows a decent amount of interest.

Congrats, @jgalls!! I agree that completing the DHS more than substitutes for a letter of continuing interest. I guess you won’t know about merit award until sometime this week. Should be a strong one, though.
