ADMISSION DECISIONS FALL 2016 (CLASS OF 2020)

Sorry to be redundant, but my decision could be released literally whenever?

@violintigress

No, just anytime between now and April 1. I would advise assuming that Tulane won’t release decisions until then, and if something shows up in the mail before that? Bonus!!

General Comments:

Was nice to find out this early since every other school is late March/early April. Do the deferred Early Action applicants always get their decisions earlier?
Also, regarding the Paul Tulane Award, do rejections for that get sent out, or just acceptances? Since those are done on a rolling basis, I would think the former, but regardless, I’m still hoping to get Paul Tulane, though that may be wishful thinking. How many people win?

@hjbvh1

My replies are in italics:

is tulane only sending out acceptances at this point, like in the EA round?

@direstraits25

I believe but I am not 100% sure that Tulane waits until the last set of notifications to send denials and wait list notifications.

Should I send my AP test scores to Tulane? I thought we had to do that once we got accepted so we can know how much credit we can get. It appears that some people sent their AP test scores with their app according to the what people who got accepted have posted on here?

It makes no difference if you send them in now or after you decide to attend, @fallingbrick.

@fallingbrick since this is your senior year, only send them to the school you are going to end up attending (meaning waiting until the spring if you’re taking some this year). Most people who report AP scores on CC only self report them on the Common App. It’s a waste of money to send them now. Tulane does have a chart to see what credit you get for AP. Check their website!

@fallingbrick - Definitely only spend money to send AP scores to the college you will attend–assuming you will get credit for them. BUT if you didn’t self-report your scores on the Common App and you did well (4’s or 5’s on several exams), it can’t hurt to stick them in an email to your Tulane regional rep. Although the scores are not an official, required part of the admissions process, strong scores can give a borderline candidate a boost or perhaps even help in the merit-aid department.

I applied EA and got deferred
ACT: 28
GPA: 4.1 weighted 3.9 UW
I also took dual enrollment classes and got a 4.0 (out of 4.0) for the semester

I was wondering when about I should find out if I was accepted or not? If I haven’t received a decision yet does that mean I probably won’t be accepted? Do I still have a chance to get a scholarship?

@aaaammy123

The fact that you have not heard yet means nothing. You will hear by March 31. Based just on those stats you should have a good chance, but of course there is more to it than stats.

Even people hearing at the end can get scholarships. However, with a 28 on the ACT, being as that is the 25th percentile for Tulane, I would have to think your chances are not so great for a merit scholarship.

@jgalls

Congrats on your acceptance! I was thinking that deferred students had to wait until April. Did you hear about the scholarship?

Decision: Accepted (Feb 16)
Decision: Deferred (Dec 09)

School/major: History

Objective:

  • []SAT I (breakdown): 2050 (720 M, 680 CR, 650 W) or 1400 M+V
    [
    ]ACT (breakdown): 29 (didn’t send official report but self-reported on Common App)
    []SAT II (place score in parentheses): N/A
    [
    ]Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): School doesn’t do unweighted (but I’m right around 3.9), Mid-Year Weighted: 4.19
    []Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 4/135 (top 3%)
    [
    ]AP (place score in parentheses): N/A (taken AP classes but no tests)
    []IB (place score in parentheses): N/A (not offered)
    [
    ]Senior Year Course Load: Second semester = 17 credits at community college: Anthropology, Environmental Science, History 102 (1500-1900 C.E.), Interdisciplinary Seminar, Yoga, and Sociology.
    []Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Unfortunately, not many (because my high school was an online charter) so all I received was the President’s Education award.

Subjective:

  • []Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): 3 years with leadership training/community service group (served as peer-elected Vice President and mentor-appointed Secretary), community theatre involvement through my entire high school career (and many years before that), Actively involved in church (teaching Sunday school, VBS art classes, Co-directing Christmas play 3 years in a row), etc.
    []Job/Work Experience: Freelance web design (self taught HTML/CSS coding; building e-commerce website for local business) and assistant teaching theatre classes.
    [
    ]Volunteer/Community Service: Not at much as some have, but still quite a lot. Many of my extracurriculars were service oriented.
    []Summer Activities: Community service, TAing for theatre classes, Educational travel experience
    [
    ]Essays: Common App essay was really good, I think. I wrote about my first theatre audition, what I learned from it, and how that experience is still important to who I am today. It was also reviewed by a professional college counselor, who said she was impressed with it as well. My “Why Tulane” essay was written really thoughtfully, and it showed that I’d done a lot of research on Tulane. It was on the longer side, at 800-900 words.
    []Teacher Recommendations: 10/10 Only sent one but it was written by my history professor (who got her Master’s from Tulane) and the letter was absolutely fantastic; very thorough, descriptive, and positive!
    [
    ]Counselor Rec: Really quite good, because my HS is online I didn’t know her too well, but I talked with her a lot about it/myself first.
    []Additional Rec: N/A
    [
    ]Interview: N/A

Other:

  • []State (if domestic applicant): Idaho (had been told that my SAT/GPA look even better with Idaho being one of (if not the) worst-ranked states for education)
    [
    ]Country (if international applicant): United States
    []School Type: Public Online Charter
    [
    ]Ethnicity: Northern European
    []Gender: M
    [
    ]Income Bracket: $45,000-$55,000 (with 6 people in family)
    []Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None specifically

Reflection:
[
]Strengths: Essays, recommendation, grades, unique artistic talent (pysanky)
[]Weaknesses: Potentially that I don’t have enough ECs.
[
]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I was super excited about Tulane from the start, and demonstrated a lot of interest to my counselor. Applied EA and DHS but was first deferred. At the start of this year, I connected with my admissions counselor again and sent her a ton of supplementary material…first an email updating her on second semester course load and first semester grades, followed by art supplement (with additional 1 page essay/artist’s statement), link to website that I created, my official updated transcripts, and an email about my desire to participate in community service in NOLA. I know this is probably much more than I needed to send in, but I’m so thankful that it worked out well for me!
[]Where else you are applying or have already applied: NYU, USC, George Washington, Boston University, Cal Berkeley, UCLA, and others that were either easier to get to or extreme reach schools.
[
]General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Congratulations to everyone who has gotten accepted, and best of luck to those who are yet to hear back. For deferred applicants: Tulane is still an option! I was definitely disappointed by my deferral but am so glad that I sent in the extra info and feel so lucky to have gotten accepted!

@searchngmom nope, no word about a scholarship yet. Ill post what I receive when/ if I do.

Thanks. Good luck!

Admission file review went unde review last evening. Although alll documents were complete before 1st Feb only cert. Of finance was remaining which I sent in yesterday… when should I receive a decision.? Like what is the likely outcome period

Accepted! (February 17)
Previously deferred SCEA (December 9)

Stats on post #872. SUCH a relief to get in to one of my top choices. Now I’m just anxiously awaiting to see if I get any merit aid.

My midyear report was only submitted yesterday, and I suspect that could be why I heard today (GPA was 3.75 first semester, after dipping during junior year).

Hearty congrats, @usualhopeful, I know this was a big one for you. Fingers crossed for merit aid, but don’t forget need based aid can include grants as well.
