So I was admitted as a transfer student to UCB, UCLA, UCSD, AND UCD. I sent my SIR about a month ago to Berkeley. Recently I found out I got a C in one of my classes, resulting in me not meeting my conditions of admission (no C’s allowed (only Berkeley had this requirement)). My admission was revoked…
This is like if you’re a kid and you work so hard to get a candy as a treat, only to have it taken away right before the first bite.
Is there anything I can do to get back in?
Will other UC’s accept me? The SIR deadline passed June 30th…
What am I going to do for next year? Holy heck this is depressing.
Another transfer recently reported this, in the UC or UC transfer forum. He said the admissions person told him there is no appeal. I’m not sure what your options are. Try the UC transfer forum.

It looks like you should have worked harder for that candy.
You can try calling Riverside and Merced to see if they will accept you.
Call the other UCs and ask them if it’s too late. Kids change their minds every year. I did find one freshman story that changed her mind after attending UCB and then called UCLA and she was admitted and attending there. She posted her story on CC. Luckily for her UCLA started much later then UCB. So it doesn’t hurt to try.
Can you retake that class this summer and reapply? What does the letter from Berkeley say about your options?
Have you tried calling the other UCs that admitted you to see if you could still choose one of those options?
First off, thanks everyone that replied thus far. I found out yesterday about my admission status and threw this post in an attempt to get help as well as use it as a form of 3:00 A.M. venting.
The letter from the dean of admissions says, “We admitted you to the University of California, Berkeley for Fall 2015 semester on the condition that you would earn a B or Better in Physics 4C. We regret to inform you that because you did not meet these conditions, we are cancelling your admission.”
I assume that taking the class over the summer is not an option. Otherwise they would have changed my conditions of admission. However, I should still ask the admissions office for that chance.
I sent an email to admissions to UCSD and UCLA. UCLA has yet to reply but UCSD said they do not accept SIR’s past the deadline. However this seemed the be an automated response. Monday I will call the other schools that accepted me and hopefully have a personal conversation. Do I need to convince them to accept me still? I’m not sure what to say to them yet.
As for UCB, I am going to ask the dean of sciences at my community college to advocate for me and write a letter or something to hook me up. I’ll also ask my admissions officer, Quincy Jones, for the possibility of an interview. I NEED to get that interview and I NEED to show them the type of person I am. I am still in disbelief that I was rescinded.
I AM NOT GIVING UP! I WILL GO TO A UNIVERSITY NEXT SEMESTER!
If you knew the requirement was a B or better, why did you get a C?
Obviously you should not have gotten the C (Were you lazy? Or was the class just hard?) but that’s a harsh punishment. Good luck.
I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page. The other post where he was told there was no appeal was from a student answering the phones in the admissions office. That’s what he told me in a pm. So, I believe anyone can appeal, but whether it will be successful is another thing.
The one big takeaway is that Berkeley is way more stringent regarding violation of provisionals than other UCs. I’ve noticed they’re in the take no prisoners mode.
As an appeal must be new and compelling info from up to the previous fall term, you’re a little stuck. The only possibility might be an emergency situation this term, I suppose. But that kind of seems iffy. You’re in a bind. I am sorry.
@ErinsDad is correct, you could try Merced.
Of course, Berkeley and most of the other UCs are also much more clear on what the conditions of admission are in terms of specific grade and GPA minimums, compared to many other schools which vaguely write things like “we expect you to maintain your previous academic performance” resulting in “will I be rescinded?” posts from 4.0 students whose last semester GPAs drop to 3.5 or so.
Don’t talk to the student, insist you talk to a real admission officer. The answer maybe no but at least you try. In the past when I called and talked to a student working in the office, I get different answer.
“The SIR deadline passed June 30th”
It’s June 28th right now
I think OP meant May 30th
^ ahh my bad
OP I’m really sorry to hear about all of this it seems pretty harsh. I hope things work out for you. And to everyone asking him why didn’t he just get a B… You don’t think he thought of that already? Sometimes shit just happens. The grades you get doesn’t always reflect how intelligent you are (or aren’t). It’s so easy to have a bad day on a test, or even have a disagreement with the teacher on things like partial credit. So many small things can go wrong. I think its over the top to rescind someone for PASSING a class.
Man I’m so sorry about all that, good luck. I know UCLA Is a lot more lenient. I violated my contract and they still let me in, so they may be lenient for you too.
No matter how this works out for OP, this will be a huge lesson to other students.
Yea but that really doesn’t help the OP
Thanks everyone for your input. I forgot to mention I was taking 18 units and I received A’s in all my other courses, except 3rd semester physics. This put me at a 3.42 gpa for the semester, which isn’t the worst. I went into the class with an A, but didn’t do well on final. But to be honest, I wouldn’t know. My professor never posted any grades or handed any grades back (except the first midterm which I aced).
As for the other schools that accepted me, I called UCSD and they completely denied me. They said there is no appeal for late SIR submissions. For UCI, you can only do that 2 weeks after the original deadline. UCD and UCLA I’m not sure of yet, waiting to see what they say.
As for UCB, I asked for the interview but was denied by Quincy Jones. I’m waiting to see if he would let me retake the course. I am prepared to go on my knees at the admissions office at Berkeley and beg for mercy. I can’t tell you how desperately I want to be in…
Ouch. As a parent, I really feel for you. That seems so harsh–are you sure you want to be at UCB? I’m not sure I would want my kids at a school that is so lock-step. Keep us posted on the outcome. Don’t forget that you’re young and have lots of options in life. You may feel desperate to start school in the fall, but a gap year between high school and college can be full of rewarding opportunities in the long run.
