Data is from the “Weekly Report”, Columbus Campus, New First Year Students, at this link…

Pretty crazy numbers. Acceptance rate shot up to 63% from 49% this time last year. That is a ridiculous increase. Instead of messing with their numbers they should have incentivized students to accept with better packages. Where will they even house these kids if they get conversion rates similar to last year? The school should be communicating better with prospective students and those that accepted already. I’m a little disappointed in how OSU is handling this.

International applications are down, as are int’ls who have paid the enrollment fee. If they are anticipating fewer full-pay international students, they may be trying to compensate without further reducing tuition revenue by offering more generous packages. Don’t know, just a guess.

OSU paid I heard 35m in room/board refunds in last couple of weeks, obviously not alone but big student body obviously…merit money was spoken for month or so ago, perhaps hoping for some full pay OOS and full pay in state, will be interesting to see their yields…

@momzilla2D while I agree there will most likely be fewer international students due to restrictions, at the moment there is only a 50 person difference year over year. Additionally, the overall number who paid the acceptance fee is only ~300 so the extra 8k domestic is far and away a much larger number.

@DG I have a hard time accepted paying full OOS tuition for an online learning experience for my daughter. She didn’t fall in love with the teachers, she fell in love with the campus experience, the LLC, the students. In reality, especially for Gen Eds she could take those classes at Rutgers or even CC and get the same knowledge. The positive of OSU is the interaction with the students, the living away from home, the clubs, the football games.

I think Universities need to step up and reassure students that they will not pay full tuition for less than a full experience. They should allow deferral of acceptance and allow kids to take credits at local CC or university and allow them on campus when life normalizes.

@DG I’m wondering if you are an in-state family?

Others on this forum who are OOS…how do you feel about paying the full OOS tuition for an on-line experience if things come to that?

I guess as an additional follow up, normally OSU has ~8,400 students able to enroll this is ~33% of admitted students. What happens if a similar number of accepted students decide to enroll…this would be an entering class of ~11,000 students!!! How will OSU house these students? What about getting into the classes students want? How will OSU ensure professors and staff aren’t inundated and be able to provide the same level of education?

my daughter got into OSU and University of Wisconsin Madison…she wants to go to OSU…any thoughts on differences or similarities of these two schools?

I think OSU played a bad management game of admitting students this year. How are they going to distribute the opportunities to every enrolled students if the yield rate is similar to last year?? And it would be superrr competitive for the students coming in 2021.

@momzilla2D Wondering if I should just email OSU Admissions to inquire about the big difference in acceptance rate…or is that too bold or out of line? Also…is this a public report…do they know that we have access to it? I definitely won’t email them if this is something we aren’t even supposed to have access to lol!

@Pelorider - no am OOS, got National Buckeye and Provost (i think that’s it) scholarships - 35 ACT, 3.9 UW GPA - Mother is alum - Honors (Fisher) - considered UW Madison (no merit), IU (15k merit) - OSU I believe was 18.5k merit total.

@BBALL2002 - re Madison and OSU - both awesome schools - main difference is city vs. college town, and what the preference is, cost, etc. Hard to make a bad choice between the two…

@smgins - totally agree…if OSU is online in the fall (50% chance i think), wont have to pay for room/board…I am DIEHARD football fan and planned to be part of Block O - that will suck, but I do not want to take a year off and am ready to start my business education…OSU refunded 35m in room/board for current students.

@kittycat1203 It is a public report. No issues there. I would encourage you to ask Admissions any questions you may have.

@kittycat1203 Why are you wanting to email them? Is it to inform an impending decision to attend OSU vs. another school? I don’t think they are going to divulge their strategy regarding yield, etc., especially if it relates to contingency plans for the fall. I do think OOS and international enrollments will take a hit for most universities this fall due to the uncertain environment we find ourselves in.

@rbc2018 is right…they’re not going to tell you their process…agree that OOS and intl students will pose some uncertainty for all universities and they all will implement various strategies to deal with it etc…

I guess we are just nervous now about over enrollment…was wondering if OSU would shed some light on it. But suppose you guys are correct…they aren’t going to share their strategy with me. Actually really hoping that admissions would just say there is a glitch in that report and the numbers are incorrect HAHA…that would solve this issue!

@kittycat1203 I think it’s totally fair to ask any questions you/any parent has. We will be paying a lot of $$ to send our kids to college and our kids have choices. The school, if they are really interested in having a high quality student body, should be offering a high quality education and overall experience. It’s a 2-way street…they get to accept who they want, and then families can decide where to go. Would you hesitate to ask a doctor questions about quality of care or any other business providing a service about the quality of what they’re offering? Schools know kids apply and get accepted to a number of schools and then the schools (typically) try to encourage admitted students to accept.unless OSU is just counting on the extra 8k to protect them from having to do any selling or providing a high quality experience —which would be very disappointing. I plan to ask questions for sure!!
