Admissions Discussion/Decisions - Class of 2024

It would best to call the school to find out. Considering all the classes are going to be online, the cost should be the same. My OOS daughter registered for two classes and the cost was the same. This has been the policy for a few years.

As far as being an incoming Freshman accepted to the Fall semester, I am not sure how it would work to take classes in the summer prior to the stated admitted term.

Thanks @Boomer1964, I was thinking the same thing myself. Is there any way we can know what are some of the other classes on this list?

Thank you

Sorry I’m late!

@momzilla2D - Thanks for providing admission report every week. I am truly surprised to see acceptance rate rise to 63% this year compared to 49% last year. This could have a negative impact on OSU’s national ranking for being less selective. They are definitely doing this to try to protect themselves from possible financial downfall with all the uncertainty.

Basically they are admitting everyone they can in order to minimize the financial concerns they will be having. The revenue loss from what could potentially be unimaginable is forcing OSU to these drastic measures. With the potential loss of revenue from room and board, Fall Sports, and students not returning in the Fall, the consequences will be devastating. The only thing they can control right now is to accept as many students as they can. At this point, I do not think they care about those rankings. But like everything else, there will be consequences and there are many parents/students who do pay attention to selectivity and ranking. I am sure, there will be people getting turn off by this UNLESS, the financial package is strong enough to make OSU an affordable school. Ultimately, this could be just an asterisk for one year or two years, but I can see many looking the other way. I personally do not like it, but I understand it.

@collegeisago - I totally agree with you. If it turns out there are 10,000 students admitted to OSU this year, do they have enough dorm rooms to accommodate all of them? What is the alternative if this happens?

We had a discussion with an admissions counselor concerning these very points…
1- admitted more domestic students as the likelihood of international students being able to come in the Fall is viewed with skepticism. Embassies are closed at least until May and if returning students went home it is unlikely they will be able to return let alone new students.
2- While they do not anticipate having a class size greater than normal (~8,400), they could accommodate a larger class through allowing 2nd years to move off campus. Also, remember that if there are fewer returning international students and or returning domestic students this frees up space in the dorms as well.
3- Admissions believe the overall statistics of the class were not lowered, they allowed more of the people that would normally be deferred and/or waitlisted in that had similar numbers to their normal acceptance criteria. (Perhaps those with bad essays or recommendations - it wasn’t enumerated)
4- Class size can be managed through additional sections being opened and don’t see this as an issue.

The counselor expected to see some news at the beginning of May as they want to have decisions made 2-2.5 months in advance.

I don’t buy into this. Somehow, somewhere along the lines some of these acceptances are not as strong as what was initially intended. The extra 10K acceptances are a very very large number. Bad essays or bad recommendations dilute the class. As I said, I do not like it at all, but I understand it. For sure a great opportunity to the many who got in and will be attending.

It is what it is. This is an unprecedented year. And admissions for next year will be test optional across the country, so it will be another odd year. I guarantee universities are more worried about solvency in the next year than rankings.

@rbc2018 I sat in on a virtual tour for tOSU yesterday with D21, and as of now, they still want to see test scores (ACT/SAT) as part of next year’s Admission application.

@H0llyw00d I’m kind of surprised, because so many big schools have already announced. They must be optimistic that the late summer SAT/ACT sittings will resume. My junior daughter took the ACT in early February and luckily doesn’t need to retake it, so I don’t want scores to go away entirely for her sake! I really do hope kids have options to take the tests they want to take.

In Ohio state law requires districts and community schools to administer the state-funded ACT or SAT to all grade 11 students in the spring of the school year. So most in state students will already have a score to submit in fall.

@BuckeyeMWDSG That makes sense. I guess they took it before the shutdown?

Feb 25 and March 10 were the ACT test dates, SAT March 4 and schools were still open. I think schools were closed by the state beginning March 16. http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Testing/State-Funded-ACT-Test

Oops, missed a week. If anyone has the 4/20 numbers, feel free to add them.

We pulled that report this morning as well. It shows that 8560 have already enrolled vs 7659 at the same point in time last year. The total 2019 class size was 8407 (while 2018 was 8517). We are concerned that in the next few days leading up to May 1st there is going to be a big increase in the number enrolled. Ooops with all the craziness going on, we didn’t get an email out to admissions regarding this possible over-enrollment. Hoping they have a plan for where to house the extra freshman. My son is still on the fence between OSU and UGA. We are secretly hoping he picks OSU due to fact he was direct-admit to Fisher Business. But perhaps there are others similar to us…who paid the $100 enrollment fee months ago, but then their child was accepted into another school at a later date. If a good chunk of kids end up choosing a different school by 5/1 then maybe over-enrollment will not pose as much of a problem.

didn’t know you could pay the enrollment fee and not enroll…interesting…

@DG You lose the non-refundable fee of $100. We weren’t intending on doing this until my son was accepted at UGA on 3/13 in regular decision. Now he is torn between the two schools.

@kittycat1203 - ah I see…reminder I need to reach out to UGA to decline admission…

@kittycat1203 - Will you be paying IS or OOS tuition for either OSU or UGA? What is your son’s major? I think those are two important factors to help him make the final decision.
