Admissions Discussion/Decisions - Class of 2024

@momtoaandv My son was accepted 1/31 & paid $100 fee about a week later in early Feb. He received housing contract on 3/27.

Good luck to everyone getting the housing they want!
Anyone know if most freshmen get stuck in bunked beds quads? Or if their housing contract in early enough do they have a shot at getting a traditional double?

is anyone else thinking about taking a summer class? I can’t imagine there will be a lot of potential summer jobs given what’s going on…am wondering if anyone else considering it - wondering if I can get a Gen Ed class out of the way this summer…

Last year, my D19 paid her enrollment fee in early April, so was late in the housing queue. She got a double, but in one of the oldest dorms (Baker West) with no AC. The first couple of months were brutally hot, but she suffered thru. Then, her roommate decided not to come back after winter break, so D had the double all to herself! I was sure they would move another student in, but that never happened.

@momzilla2D Ok thanks. My daughter goes to college in Boston and her dorms did not have AC both freshman and sophomore year, but was lucky and only had a few hot weeks in Sept and May. But my son has been reading that Columbus’ weather very unpredictable in that can be freezing one day, then hot the next. Anyway think he would prefer double with no AC to quad with AC. Just less schedules to deal with.

@DG That’s a good idea. My daughter is not at OSU, but she is hoping that if her internship in NYC is cancelled this summer that her school will allow her to take an online summer class (perhaps many schools will extend registration deadlines?)
The work will help keep them sane and make their fall schedules a little lighter. So once my son makes his final college decision, maybe he should consider signing up for a core class if restrictions are still in place.

My D19 is taking one GenEd class this summer, online at OSU. She had planned on getting a summer job, but that’s out.

D20 hasn’t decided on a school yet, but probably won’t do a summer class. She has a summer job at an arts camp, that has not (yet) been cancelled.

@kittycat1203 - yeah need to reach out to counselor at osu and see. The OOS fee for summer class seems high. Perhaps can do local option and see if transfers. 3k for a summer class seems extreme especially since I have merit money at osu for regular school year. Will investigate.

@kittycat1203 I’m wondering the same thing. My son doesn’t need AC but a double would really be preferable to a triple or quad! It seemed like majority of South dorms were doubles, but I could be remembering that wrong.

@DG Daughter is taking two summer classes since what else is there to do. The cost is the same for OOS as IN-State since all the classes are online. When I checked the prices for our local school the price was just slightly higher, but she just feels that she would not have to deal with the transfers and trying to get them approved, etc.

@boomer1964 - it appears OSU is higher OOS for online classes…agree better to take at the school directly…plus you feel part of community, albeit online only (for now)…

@Boomer1964 - was wrong…its the same in or out of state…

@Boomer1964 - I assume she’s doing gen ed stuff? is good idea I think

@DG The only thing I would caution you about is placement. You wouldn’t want to take a class that you could just place out of. They normally do the placement tests during orientation. I know they do math and language, not sure if others, but if you can speak with an advisor, they should be able to help.

The fees for summer online courses are not the same for IS as OOS. The general fee is the same but a non-resident surcharge is added (both are reduced 25% in the summer). See the following link:

https://registrar.osu.edu/summerterm/

The in-person classes DO HAVE THE EXTRA fee (no such thing this summer) However, online is the same

Thank you, @Boomer1964 , I’ve been confused about that, as well.

You are very welcome. Our local colleges here in GA are about the same. Some might be a little cheaper, but not worth the aggravation. Having said that, there are plenty of weed out classes at OSU (Accounting, Chemistry, etc ) and I would probably consider taking those somewhere else especially if GPA’s and scholarships are on the line.

I’m an in-state incoming freshman at OSU but I’m thinking of taking an online class this summer to get a head start. However, I’m not enrolled at OSU until the fall so is there some way I can still take an online class and have it count as credit?

@Boomer1964 - yes going to look at classes that I will be able to get out of - which appears to be 3-4 classes already…need to reach out to OSU this week and see…

@Boomer1964 do you know if they are in fact considering their regular classes that happen to have to be taught online b/c of Coronavirus as online classes? I’m wondering if they only consider online classes as those classes that are designed specifically to be taken online and are online courses even when there’s not a state of emergency.
