Admissions Questions

I have 3 questions

I go to school in Georgia but my dad has lived and worked in Virginia since May 2005. He has a virginia drivers license and is registered to vote there too. Before living in georgia he lived in Florida where there is no income tax, so he has not payed income tax to any other states. I am a dependent on his tax forms. Will I be considered in state?

I am not sure whether to apply to the colleges of arts and science or the engineering school. I’m dont know want to major in but there is a possibilty i will end up in an engineering major. I also hear that it is easier to get into the engineering school than the arts and science school. If i get into the engineering school how easy is it to tranfer to the college of arts and sciences?

What are my chances doing Early Decision?

No need to ask CC. Check out the UVa website. In 30 seconds, I found this:

“A student, parent(s) or spouse must be domiciled in Virginia for at least twelve continuous months immediately preceding the first day of classes. This means the student parent(s) or spouse must actually reside in Virginia during this period while simultaneously demonstrating their intent to be domiciled in Virginia. Intent is demonstrated by, among other things, paying resident taxes to Virginia, obtaining a Virginia driver’s license, car & voter registrations.”

So, for you, you did not reside in VA and you did not pay taxes to VA, so you are not a VA resident. What address is on your father’s drivers license? If it’s a VA adress, did he pay personal property taxes for the county he resided in?

The taxes are the thing:

“Once you have established domicile in Virginia, you may be absent from the State provided you 1) continue to file resident Virginia income tax returns (Form 760) each year you are out of the State, declaring ALL earned income regardless of source; and, 2) do nothing incompatible with your claim of domicile, such as registering to vote in another state.”

Whoops. Further down in the document I found this:

Q: If my parents are divorced am I eligible for in-state educational privileges if I live outside of Virginia and my non-custodial parent lives in Virginia?

A: Yes, if the non-custodial parent contributes substantially to your support and is domiciled in Virginia.

I guess there’s your answer. Okay, 45 seconds.

Thanks for the info redbeard. My dad has been paying virginia income taxes since may and i would start school next september so hopefully i will get instate. Any opinions on my other two questions?

I can’t respond to the academic questions, as I know too little about that…but I do know a bit about becoming a VA resident, because I’ve been trying to establish residency and have perused many documents in support of my case. This is taken from a section on UVA’s application for in-state tuition:

"Section C (To be completed by the applicant’s parent, spouse, or legal guardian if the applicant is financially dependent or by the applicant if financially independent).

ANSWER THIS QUESTION ONLY IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE VIRGINIA BUT WORK IN VIRGINIA
Will you or your spouse have lived outside Virginia, been employed and earned at least $10,300 in Virginia, and paid Virginia income tax on all taxable income earned in this Commonwealth, and claimed the applicant as a dependent for federal and Virginia income tax purposes for at least one year immediately prior to the term in which the applicant will enroll?"

I don’t know how to properly format this, but I hope it helps regardless.

Thanks silence i have filled out that portion of the application and everything seems alright but my concern was that i dont go to a school in virginia but redbeards 2nd post made me feel better about that. Does anybody know anything about switching schools after getting in or have any opinions on my admission chances?

bump…

I am not sure whether to apply to the colleges of arts and science or the engineering school. I’m dont know want to major in but there is a possibilty i will end up in an engineering major. I also hear that it is easier to get into the engineering school than the arts and science school.

Don’t apply to a school just because you HEAR its easier to get into. Actually the e-school is pretty competetive. And if you get started in e-school and decide you want to transfer – yes, you can do that.

smiles, your considered instate. I had the same question so i called the admissions office and told them my situation. Its exactly like yours. Remember to put it down in the application part where it says please explain any of the situations clearly. LIke i put that prior to the start of my Fall 2006 term, my dad will be domiciled in VA for 1.5 yrs

Thanks bo_bombers i think ill stick to arts and science school. I thought it was easier to get in the e-school because on the uva website it says the acceptance rate for the e-school was 56% whereas the acceptance rate for the arts and science school was 35% last year. Thrills, thank you for the info i feel better about my status as instate student now.
