Admitted Texas A&M University, Class of 2028

A $1000 endowed scholarship just popped up in my son’s financial aid portal… he accepted it, but will he eventually get an email or letter with more details about it. Requirements to maintain, whether it is renewable?

If you are in the financial aid portal and click on the name of the scholarship, another screen will pop up that will provide some limited information. An example of one of the ones in my son’s portal to see what it looks like is (I’ve cut out the identifying info that is listed below the maroon box):

A number of department scholarships were uploaded this past week. My son received separate emails to his TAMU email regarding the ones that he received this week. Watch for more information as many of these scholarships will require a thank you letter, or even attendance at an event/banquet.

If it is a department scholarship, the majority are for one year only.

Thank you! It says “This scholarship is offered to you by Scholarships & Financial Aid at Texas A&M University. In order to receive these funds, you must enroll full-time, maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress, and meet all program requirements.”

Hopefully he gets an email next week with more information since he accepted it. :crossed_fingers: It was a nice surprise!

And thank you to whomever said to check your email and portal regularly!

For any OOS students, it looks like the OOS waivers for 2024-2025 started showing up this week. If you think/wonder if the scholarships your student received qualified as “competitive”, you can look for it in the financial aid portal under “Awards”, and then “Accepted Aid”, and hopefully you would see a line item that looks like this:

:raising_hand_woman:t2: @Raider97 i suggested checking FinAid tab on a regular basis.

Yay! A $1,000 award/scholarship may not seem like much, but trust me…some students never even get that. Most likely it is a one time award.

Your son should receive an email about the award, but might not. If a scholarship requires a Thank You, he will definitely get instructions on what to do (and that may not arrive until August). He will need to follow the instructions EXACTLY…don’t just haul off and write/mail.
Some require submitting on a certain date to the FinAid office, others require submitting to advisor, big ones have a mandatory dinner/banquet to attend. Some don’t require anything.

I strongly suggest submitting FAFSA yearly, even if he doesn’t qualify. Most A&M scholarships require FAFSA to be on file, and student will automatically get skipped, if they haven’t submitted.

One last thing…if a Thank You or banquet is required, and he doesn’t do what is required, the scholarship will be revoked. No grace.
So remind student to be diligent in checking, following thru.

Thanks!!

Yes, every little bit helps! He was late turning in his offers to his regional recruiter for the Aggieland Bound Scholarship (they had already run out of money) so this $1000 is so appreciated! We found out he is a Houston Rodeo Scholar so that scholarship really helped the bottom line.

Oh wow! HLSR scholarships are AMAZING!!

One word of advice-it NEVER pays to be late for anything, when it comes to A&M. Except for parking (which is a lottery draw), students need to jump on things the day they open up!

*add Sports Pass 1st day
*be ready to log in for registration the minute time slot opens (check for holds on account way before registration)
*make advisor appts early
*submit Returning Student Scholarship application during Christmas break (not necessary to apply when it opens, the window goes from October-Feb 1…but apply/submit during holiday, so it isn’t forgotten about)
*don’t wait to pull football tix until Friday
*follow scholarship Thank You instructions CAREFULLY (if needing to submit)
*never wait until the last minute to submit assignments…A&M IT/wifi is guaranteed to crash multiple times a semester

A&M is HUGE, wildly competitive-in & out of the classroom. There’s zero grace for anything late.
It can be a painful lesson to learn…

Thanks! We are thrilled!!

All good information! Thank you! He was accepted to engineering honors and we are thrilled he will get to register early with the program.

He emailed the scholarship office and they said he would be getting an email with more information about his award.

Just a heads up for those who haven’t heard. Parking assignments came out yesterday.

Someone mentioned scholarships and full time status… my son received an Opportunity Scholarship it requires full time status… he was planning to pick up a one hour KINE athletic class to get himself to 12 hours in the fall (engineering so planning classes for ETAM success). Will that KINE class count towards full time status in regards to scholarships?

All A&M scholarships will require Full Time student status, 12 hours. I’m kinda shocked advisor allowed him to register for less than 12.

A KINE is an A&M class, so yes, it counts just like all other A&M classes. Some are more time consuming/harder than others…don’t assume they’re a blow off. Most are super fun, can be great stress relievers.

If an off campus freshman who applied early got waitlisted on parking, what are his chances of getting a spot in Lot 100? What are the options if he didn’t get a spot? Catch a ride with a friend? Catch the bus? Is there a shuttle from an alternate lot?

He would be at 12 with KINE… we go to NSC this week. Just wasn’t my sure if KINE meets scholarships requirements because someone mentioned the classes had to be in degree plan for scholarships.

Not true, definitely not for an Opportunity Award.
I feel certain advisor will want him to take 12 hours.

@AETX Parking is lottery, doesn’t matter if student applies first or last day.
Depends on Wait List number, but chances are SLIM for off campus freshman to get even Lot 100…the lowest on the parking totem pole.
Super important to live ON the bus route. Lot 100 oversells and is crazy daily, so many take the bus, even with Lot 100 pass.

Son was living 2 miles off campus and was able to get a permit from St Marys a couple of years ago. He enjoyed riding his bike unless it was raining

Also, his house was north of campus and St Marys is just north of campus so the drive to St Marys was easy

Do you happen to know if since he can register as a sophomore in the spring if that will help parking chances? Does Honors help? Is there a type to choose that can improve chances?

None of that will matter. I promise you the parking system is awful for freshman. Lot 100 is the worst. They oversell and it’s like a hunting ground in the mornings.

Best bet is shuttle from apartment/housing. Great system for that.

Off campus freshman are the LAST to get any shot at a parking spot. Doesn’t matter how many hours they come in with, or if they’re honors…bottom of the list.
Parking registration is for the year, not per semester.
If he’s not living ON the bus line, or close enough to walk to campus…find another place to live. Students don’t really ‘carpool’, as they all have different schedules. There is not a site to drive to, to catch an A&M bus.
Like @Christi1993 said, Lot 100 is oversold, so unless student is there by like 7:15-7:25 a.m. daily, nearly impossible to find a spot. Lot 100 isn’t a great lot, but it’s the only option for an off campus freshman.
