So I’ll start off with explaining my situation,I was born in upstate NY ,then when I was seven my family and I moved to Ireland ,and a few months ago we moved back to NY ,and I plan to study at the local community college in Orange county (NY) ,I’m going to be doing it part time at first and then gradually getting into full time for economic and medical reasons (I’m recovering from myalgic encephalomyelitis) ,I’ve been here for a few months but the problem is I haven’t socialized much as I haven’t really had a chance to ,and I’m the first person to go to college in the US(my older brother and sister went in Ireland),and I don’t really know many people here that are around my age ,so I’m basically starting out fresh ,so what advice do you have for socializing ?
Join a club or organization on campus. Most of my D’s friends from community college are the ones she met and hung out with in SGA (Student Government Association).
Also, try to spend time on campus. Learn your way around, spend time in the library, find the places to eat, get coffee, etc. Attend campus events, related to your major and otherwise. Don’t spend all your time staring at your iphone. Actually speak to people.
I’ll second what you’ve already heard - join clubs. Or a sports team. You may find a sports team that doesn’t require you to be a super athlete. My son joined the ultimate Frisbee team and he’d never played that sport before. It was great fun for him. Also, volunteering can be a way to meet people also.
If you try one club and don’t feel a match, it’s not a problem to try a different club.
When you feel up to it, look for a job on campus. You will meet the other students who work in that particular location, and get to know the students who use that facility regularly.
