Hi Everyone!
My daughter has heart set on A&M (and I want this for her so badly, despite being a UT grad!). We have visited several times and both fell in love with everything about it.
She wants to go into nursing and is involved in many school activities (with leadership), 3.8 unweighted, but has the pitfalls of not being an auto-admit and is not a great test-taker (she has ADHD in the truest form, but is on meds that help). She is one of those kids that is driven beyond belief and I know will succeed. But I know realistically her odds of approval are slimā¦can anyone offer advice?
I have taken her to other schools and talked for so many hours about the reality of things, but she truly has her heart set on being an Aggie. Iām just trying to find out if there is anything we can do help make this a reality or even help her chances.
Thank you!!!
Youāre a bit late in this concept but never ever have a dream school - for this reason. All schools have bad profs, bad roomies, bad food , etc. There are simply no dream schools.
A&M is unique in that it has a ācultā mentality of its grads. Their passion for school is second to none.
I also believe A&M is not a direct admit nursing school. This means getting into the university is step one but then years later you have to apply for nursing. Thereās big danger in that you donāt get in then.
Thereās lots of direct admit nursing schools where you can 100% study nursing vs much less odds as an admitted A&M student. Thereās also many large schools - although maybe not an exact A&M culture match.
Bottom line - have that discussion with your daughter - A&M is one of many places she can attend college but if she truly wants to be a nurse, it may not be the best place.
Not saying they are easy nursing admits, but ASU, Penn State and more have direct programs according to this site - also large schools - verify with the schools themselves of course.
In the end, her record is just that and only A&M can decide. Another option - starting at another A&M campus and transferring ??
Good luck.
@Amie_Rohrbach if this is your real name, I would urge you to change your screen name ASAP. Here is how:
The OP is a Texas resident, and will be paying Texas instate costs to attend a Texas public university. This will not be the case at these other public universities. That needs to be considered as well,if cost is a factor (the OP can clarify this).
Your daughter has excellent grades! And it sounds like her ECs are good. Is the main reason you think she wonāt be admitted due to standardized test score? Isnt TAMU test optional? How does your HS do with getting kids in?
I know many people who were accepted to a&m last year scores below their 25th percentile, but Iām not sure if they submitted scores. Several were offered Blinn TEAM. Does your D get extra time accommodations?
Correct. OP is looking for advice - and I donāt think any of us can offered an assured A&M pathway. So I was looking to provide alternatives in case they donāt make it.
Personally I think if I was 100% sure on my major, then non direct admit cannot be a dream because it can 100% have a nightmare effect.
Not sure if OP knows about direct and non direct admit.
I donāt see any Texas publics on the list I posted. There may be one if OP researches further.
The main advice would be to find alternatives just in case and to really understand the direct vs non admit.
If cost an issue, there are other in State and depending on budget plenty of out of state options to consider.
But focusing on one school, unless an assured admit, is a big no no so try to open your students eyes wider.
TAMU has rolling admission. OP, make sure your D submit application as soon as the TAMU admission is open next year. Good Luck.
I wouldnāt suggest A&M, if the student has their heart set on Nursing. I think the current acceptance into A&M Nursing (which is a secondary admit) is around 4%. It is truly a needle in a haystack trying to get admitted into TAMU Nursing.
My daughter is a recent Aggie grad (not Nursing) and the bulk of her friends either graduated with Allied or Public Health, then went to Tech or UTMB for accelerated nursing program. Our neighbor stayed at A&M long enough to get his Aggie ring, then completed his BSN at UT Health.
These were all wickedly smart students, near perfect HESI scores, 3.9-4.0 gpa, all were EMT certified/pharmacy techs/CNA etc.
A&M is NOT the school, if student wants to pursue Nursingā¦
Thanks for this - this goes back to there are no dream schools - and as parents, itās hard as we want for our kids what they want, but OP, you really need to stress all the potential pitfalls.
Itās great to apply but not to be 100% invested so that when she ends up elsewhere (if she does), sheāll also be happy with that decision.
