Advice needed

I am a Singaporean who is stuck between doing either a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree at the University of Melbourne.

As someone who has a greater interest in the humanities and social sciences, I intend to major in Political Science and maybe Economics too under BA. However, I have often heard that an Arts degree would not get me that far in terms of career options and salary unless I go for at least an honours or Masters. This is starting to get me really worried because I can’t imagine myself being stranded with no jobs or very poor job prospects after a few months.

Furthermore, my parents have to fork out so much money to send me to Melbourne but if I cannot get a stable job and pay after my graduation, it is really a huge cause for concern as I hope to repay them back as soon as possible.

Hence, I recently started considering a switch to BCom which is actually a business degree.
Under BCom, I may major in Economics and Marketing. This consideration is due to the conventional wisdom that business degrees are more versatile than Arts degrees in career options, and usually pay better too.

So, coming back to the point, should I opt for BA or BCom?

To be honest with you business degrees are almost as worthless as arts degree.Almost anyone with a heartbeat is doing a business degree, and the market is oversaturated with business graduates. That said,I’d go for the BCom as political science degrees are even less marketable than BCom.If you are lucky enough to get a job with the business degree you are more likely to get a better paying job.

I see, thanks.

Heard that political science graduates usually end up in teaching or the administration sectors, albeit a few exceptional cases of those working in the finance industry.

I’d guess I will probably go for business instead.

If you have a great interest in social sciences, read about them in your free time. The point of college is to increase your income earning potential. Get a degree that will make you money.
