Back on CC after 4 year, this time with my youngest. We are from VA and looking for Business Undergrad Programs and of course maximizing merit. Our goal as with our first was to get in-state or better. Stats for my youngest are:
Class of 2025
Weighted GPA 4.23
Class rank - our school district no longer reports
SAT - 1330
Not NMF
Hispanic
AP’s - 5
Business related elective all 4 years of HS
EC - 4 years travel volleyball, summer work, pet sitting, some volunteer hrs
Size/location doesn’t really matter but East coast is more reasonable. Schools applying to so far: In state-JMU, George Mason, and VA Tech; OOS-U of So Carolina, Delaware, Arizona and ASU, FSU, Rhode Island,
Looking for schools to maximize her chances for merit and that offer good business undergrad programs. Mainly wanting to make sure Im not missing any good options especially relatively near to us.
If you read this far, thank you!!!
PS: Our oldest went to U of A (Arizona), had a change of heart and transferred from Microbiology to the Eller College of Management (Marketing Major). I cannot say enough great things about the program and all the opportunities available to the students there! Has landed phenomenal summer internships, studied abroad, and is on her way to LA this weekend with the Stars in Marketing Club. Eller Rocks - for anyone considering it. The only bummer is that U of A considerably reduced their merit aid for OOS students and that is why we are looking at other options. Our oldest received almost full tuition but now the cap is at $22K…
FSU OOS tuition waiver keeps getting more competitive. Not sure what the minimum requirements are now but probably 32 ACT/1420 SAT, 4.0 and no C’s. S21 loves it there. FSU isn’t a safety anymore. Nice campus with happy kids. Good luck.
Core only which include languages (plus Eng, Sci, SS, Math), no electives.
Not having calc will likely be a disadvantage at some schools for admission purposes, and possibly to attain max merit. Getting to $30K may be difficult but from my suggestions above I would still try Dayton and Marist. I doubt Mich State or Bentley will get there, but of course ok to still put in an app. Will you qualify for any need based aid?
Schools like Christopher Newport, Southern Illiniois, Central Michigan and W Carolina will all be under budget - because CNU is in state. Millersville in PA should as well. WVU might be worth a look - not sure if it will get there.
It’s unlikely U of SC, Delaware, Arizona, ASU, and FSU will get there. It’s possible URI will - not sure. Mississippi State will get there (for 20225/26). You might look at U Kansas too.
If the 1330 was Sophomore year, I assume another one or two is coming? If it goes to 1360, U of Alabama has a fine b school - and would work. But that’s an If.
I had/have 4 business majors, 2 stayed in state so about $35,000, 1 applied to 20 schools, the highest merit bringing costs down the lowest was Saint Joseph’s in Philadelphia, I think to around $25,000. That’s with 1 B and a 33 ACT. I think Temple and SUNY Bing were her best public options, around $30,000. None of mine were interest in heading west unfortunately.
I assume she is taking the SAT again. I recommend she prepare for the exam with practice exams and tutoring. My son only took three practice exams with a tutor helping him with test-taking strategies, familiarity with common questions, etc after each exam, and he raised his score a good deal. He was also far less stressed the day of the exam.
To control costs, has your student considered taking classes at the local community college, then transfering credits to the school she ultimately wants? We know a gal who got into Purdue’s material logistics program and she took many of her freshman & sophomore pre-reqs locally while living at home, then finished at Purdue. It saved her tens of thousands of dollars. Of course, she would need to do her homework about transferring credits, etc. before going this route.
OK per my husband we can go up to $40K not that we want to spend all the money. Obvs we will be looking at value among any of the options.
I calculated the UW GPA and the AZ Abor UW GPA:
UW gpa 3.82
Abor UW gpa 3.94
Thank you. My oldest was 4.0 UW during covid and got the max at U of AZ. We only pay room and board for her. Crazy and sad that it went away as tuition went up. Their max merit is now around $22K I think which is about half of their OOS tuition.
Aw! I am a Boilermaker. Love Purdue and sadly neither of my girls want to go… We have discussed that option but cost is not the issue as we have saved enough for them and our oldest got her tuition fully covered. We just want to be smart because we don’t believe in spending much more than $40 in undergrad. Rather save the leftovers for grad school.
If she’s open to Catholic schools, Creighton came in under 40K for my daughter and they have a great business program. Miami U did as well, as did Butler.
