Advice

I’m currently a high school student living in the Caribbean therefore I will do CSEC and CAPE exams and I plan to do my SAT. Can I get some advice on how to get into good Universities in the US and and what to do to earn a good scholarship, where I live it will cost my parents millions to send me to school abroad. Help!

  1. If you are international AND can’t pay at least 30k or so, your chances will drop significantlty
  2. Good GPA(3.8 UW at least), high SAT like 2200+, and rigorous courses, good and focused ECs

30k each year or for the 4 year period? and I don’t know how to convert my GPA so I wouldn’t know my GPA. We do a very different curriculum here so would it be calculated based on that also

30k per year

That’s over 3 million dollars where I live

Okay…where do you live?Dont you have scbool grades
There are many threads on CC about SAT/ACT prep

International students who receive scholarships earn the top scores on the SAT and ACT tests along with having multiple extra curricular activities and perfect GPA’s. Even this does not guarantee funding. International students typically pay full fees to attend US universities. Scholarships for international students are very difficult to get.

I live in Jamaica, the dollar is going down the drain about 120JMD gives 1USD

Not if he has high enough Sat and GPA to qualify for merit scholarship like Howard U and U of Alabama

Is there any site that I can use to calculate my GPA I only know what good GPAs are but I don’t know since I do a different curriculum if it is going to be calculated the same, I will probably do some college course DURING my term through high school

Then get in touch with the counselors at the advising center in Kingston: http://educationusa.state.gov/centers/educationusa-advising-center-us-embassy-jamaica

If you cannot visit in person, they should be able to give you some help by phone or email. They are the experts on helping students in your country find good places to study in the US. They will be able to tell you where students like you were admitted in recent years, and whether or not they received any financial aid or scholarships.

Are you in the top 10% of a comprehensive high school, or at a prep school?
Look at the SAT and ACT websites, test yourself with questions. Register with question of the day on these websites, go to khan academy’s website.(Also see the “xiggi and silverturtle method” in the “test” section of this forum)
If you practice and practice and can raise your score to 2100 SAT or 1400 CR+M or 32 ACT, something only 2% all test takes manage, then you can go to school for the cost of life (room&board, health insurance, miscellaneous) which can still be quite a lot (12-15k) but also get a “free ride” if you’re not too demanding on the school’s ranking, plus of course you can try your luck for a full ride at Berea and at some of the top LACs and universities.
