AESD Middlesex

Tell me about these 5 schools!!! Anything!!! Negative, positive, good, bad, anything…I’d love to hear!!!

Why just those five? There are many more peer schools to AESD that are ranked higher than Middlesex… such as Choate, Hotchkiss, Groton, Milton and Lawrenceville.

I don’t like Milton that much…

I do like the other ones you named and many more but I’m looking for great dance programs in these schools. Hotchkiss doesn’t have a crew team I don’t believe. Groton doesn’t even have a dance program.

So basically, my reasons for favoring these five schools are personal. It’s not like I think the other schools are bad or anything.

Olivia, I would say Middlesex is smaller, not lower ranked…

I’d have to agree with catg… The campus is somewhat smaller than let’s say Andover or Deerfield, but the curriculum is great with a close-knit community with much fewer students…

I agree with jane and catg. It was ranked as the number two Boston private school by Boston Magazine; ahead of Groton and below Andover. I can post the link if anyone wants it.

Middlesex was originally a feeder school for Harvard.

Please do, Jonathan!!!

Someone on CC emailed me the link but it’s not working now. I tried searching Boston Magazine’s website and I couldn’t find anything either.

I found it!

http://philly4.phillymag.com/images/uploads/pdf/bostonprivate.pdf

I too would also like to know any information you have on middlesex…just pm me, anything would be great!

olivia, look closer at Middlesex, you may find that it is as good as or better than the schools you mention. I may be a bit biased but, when I researched these schools I had no preconceived notion of any school. In fact I had never heard of andover or exeter. I found Middlesex to be among the very best and ahead of the schools you mention as better. Look closer I understand that many value the ivy matric, stanford and MIT. Middlesex ranks ahead of the schools you mention as better. What else can you ask for with regard to matrics. The schools you mention as better also have lower SAT scores and middlesex has a stellar college placement office. I can say thsi as per a parent at the recent Junior parents college meeing. The parent had a child at Milton who graduated last yeear and a current junior at MX. His assessment, Middlesex made Milton college placement office look “like a joke”. His words not mine. My mistake, groton’s SAT scores are higher. If you look closely at thrier matrics and mx top to bottom you will note that they are very very similar in matrics. You then may want to consider that Groton has been notorious for looking at parents schools of graduation (high ivies numbers) and therefore the legacy status for the Groton student

Here is the prepreview you were requesting. Caution: these numbers shown on this chart are outdated and have not changed in at least 3-4 years. I have updated some of the school which I’ll note here. The info is quite accurate; I have used a number of resources, including Peterson’s Independent school books, Web sites, and current view books ( “04-“05 and “05-“06). In some cases I used 4 year numbers instead of 5 year. In Deerfields case I used 5 year matric numbers with 4 year grad numbers. In this case I took an average of the 4 years to get the 5th year number. In the case of St. Paul’s I had all the ivies with 10 or more matrics. Columbia did not have at least 10 matrics so I assumed 9 matrics for Columbia. It may have been 0 or 1 and as high as 9. I chose 9…. Also note that Nobles is really a day school.

SPS ivy 4 years 158/534 30%, Ivy/ mit/ stan ~ 33%

Deerfield Ivy 5 years 270/945 29%

Middlesex IVY 5 years 99/420 24% I/M/S 25%

Hotchkiss 5 years Ivy 120/624 19% I/M/S 133/624 21%

Lawrenceville 5 years 253/1107 23%

Milton has recently been around 25%

Overall it has become more difficult to get into these schools without a hook of some kind. At the recent Middlesex Juniors meeting for parents, the college staff said that of all the students accepted to Harvard, only 50 to 75 students are admitted purely on academics merit. So make sure you have a hook of some kind

thank you prepparent!!!

i think you guys should stop arguing. MX is a peer school, period.

Prep parent, where did you get the fact about Groton’s looking at parents… (#12). To my knowledge, this is totally not true. MS has no less legacy than other peer schools mentioned in this thread. Without legacy, the ivy number in all of prep schools would be SIGNIFICANTLY lower.

“Look closer I understand that many value the ivy matric, stanford and MIT. Middlesex ranks ahead of the schools you mention as better.”
it’s easier for MX to get a higher percentage simply becoz it is smaller…as i said many times…the principle of diminishing marginal utility applies. Harvard might not mind 10 MX kids, but it would be harder for them to swallow 20 andover kids…not becoz they arent qualified, simply for diversity reason.
It’s easy to get 3 out of 10 kids in ivy and claim you ahve 30% ivy admit rate, but it’s harder to get 300 out of 1000 kids into ivies

bearcats, your logic holds true only when talking about one college. remember the above list includes 8 ivy’s, MIT, and stanford. let’s assume that the top 20% of MX and Andover can get into ivy’s. this means that andover will have about 3 times as many kids as MX at ivy league schools, because Andover’s student body is 3 times the size of MX’s. now at any single school, MX and Andover might get similar amounts of kids in, for diversity reasons. but, andover will get more people into those 10 schools across the board because they simply have more people applying.

no but andover has to get 3 times more kids into all the 8ivys plus M S to get the same percentage. Say MX has to get 100 kids into the 10 school, averaging 10 kids per school. Why would colleges mind taking 10 kids from MX, it’s a great school. But then andover has to get 300 kids into the 10 schools, averaging 30 kids. Then the alarm might buzz, the adcoms would be like, we know andover’s a great school and whatsoever, but do we ever want 30 kids from one school?

Great points, bearcats…

You go to Hotchkiss, right? I fell in love with the school from looking at the website yesturday. As of now, it will be one of my top choices!!

I’m now going to look at AESD Hotchkiss, Taft, Choate, Middlesex.
