I have had to move to Houston due to Hurricane Katrina. Some of my classses here are not weighed the same for honors credit as in Louisiana. This brings down my GPA and class rank. Plus, I have to start a new EC list and develop new interests.
GPA: ~6.84/7.0
School: Public (very competitive)
EC: not much, key club and small sports group
Summer: planning to take some AP classes for true credit
Volunteer: At hospital?
Any advice on what to do? Do I stand a chance at all, at ED?

Yes, you stand a chance. No, this will not hurt your chances. The adcoms are human, and understand such extreme circumstances and the difficulties of adjusting/coping with such troubles. They will certainly not hold any of it against you. If nothing else, you have a basis for a very strong and personal essay.

Plus you get to check the ‘Affected by Hurricane Katrina’ box.

Well, I am a HS freshman right now. I am sure that adcoms will not be as considerate of my issue in a few years.

yea but you can write about your experiences because of katrina in your essay

I disagree with that, newtexan. I think the impacts of Katrina were/are devastating enough that the adcoms will be understanding of your situation several years from now. Also, since you are only a freshman, that means that you have plenty of time to start building up ECs. One bit of advice though - don’t start stressing out over college too early - it’ll drive you nuts.

Here’s another thought:
If adcoms are not as considerate in a few years, like you are suggesting, then it is probably because your life will be back on a “normal” track, in which case you are in the running, just the same as everyone else, which means you are fine. Also, if nothing else, they will understand COMPLETELY why you may have been “weak” in ECs in your freshman year. So, seriously, don’t worry too much.
