My DD will be interning in Sunnyvale this summer and is looking for an affordable housing. Any ideas will be appreciated.
there is a group that buys condo and rents them by the bedroom. The master suite costs more, cuz of size and private bath, and other rooms share a bath. My son found this his best choice, given limited time in the area.
Sunnyvale stretches a wide swath of the map from the Bay, east of 101 freeway, all the way west to 280 freeway. And then there’s the adjacent cities of Santa Clara and Mountain View too. Will your daughter have access to a car? If not, I’d think about locating near CalTrain, which can take her up and down the Peninsula and to SF. As you might expect, it can expensive.
Stanford might have some housing options for summer. My D has an internship at Stanford this summer and I know they offer summer housing to students participating in their internships, sports camps, etc… Maybe they might have some additional housing available.
An alternative, there are some “less urban, more rural” homes West of El Camino Real that will have in-law units, which can be rented.
Affordable is very relative. Sunnyvale is more affordable than some of its closest neighbors, but still quite expensive. Looking to rent a room is probably the best bet. Perhaps look for a room to rent near SCU where there will be students who have rented a house for a year but some of them will be working elsewhere leaving an empty room for the summer.
Thank you everyone for ideas.
Further away, there is SJSU, where some resident students living off campus may be away for the summer, leaving short term vacancies in rental housing there.
Earlier today someone told me that there is at least one really nice mobile home park in Sunnyvale. I wonder if any of those would be available as rentals?
How much is your budget per month?
Thank you everyone. Don’t have a set budget. As little as possible.
Knowing the area I would say as little as possible is probably 1000 per month. It depends on how far she wants to drive etc. Have you thought about renting an extra bedroom in someones house
The towns around here have local newspapers. And the local newspapers have ads for rooms for rent. For example, there are two ads for rooms, one in Redwood City and one in Woodside, at fogster.com. These are pretty far both of Sunnyvale. Also, the Palo Alto News and San Jose Mercury news sites may have some rooms for rent as well.
Your daughter should contact the place where she ismdoing her internship. She is likely not the first internnfrom out ofmthe area who needs summer housing. See if they have any suggestions.
Summer in Sunnyvale? Don’t need a car. Use a bike. You can take your bike onto Caltrain, on the busses, on the light rail.
BTW, I’m sure you may know this already, but SF Bay Area Craiglist ought to be the first place to look.
Literally the first listing as looked a few seconds ago was a room for $1,080 in Sunnyvale near Cal Train.
I would assume nothing less than $1000/mo for a sublet room. S2 lives in MV and pays $1400/mo for a BR and bath in a 3 BR apartment and considers that a steal. Since LinkedIn moved into Sunnyvale, prices have gone up. He was in a 600 sq ft 1 BR in Sunnyvale 4.5 years ago and that was $1700/mo at the time. It was an older, not-updated garden apartment complex, very safe and a 3/4 mile walk/bike ride to the CalTrain station.
If I was young and single or married and worked in Sunnyvale, living near Castro St. in Downtown Mountain View would just be about perfect. “Residentially”, near CalTrain, Shoreline, Theaters & the Amphitheater and Castro St. has excellent food, banks, etc.
I’m sure it’s expensive though.
Yes, my S is in that area. It’s a great area with the library, park and arts center right there. Love all the restaurants and other shops, too.
Another vote for MV if the transportation is convenient.
If your D is working for one of the major area employers, there may be shuttle buses to work, which would reduce the need for a car. My S doesn’t drive. Between his bike, the shuttle, CalTrain and buses, he is able to get anywhere he needs to for day-to-day life. .
Thank you everyone. This is her first internship after her freshman year and not for one of the major employer in the area. This was an eye-opening experience for us that if someone is looking for an employment / internship in the SV area, the pay needs to be in the range to make sense financially. We knew that SV is extremely expensive, just did not have firsthand experience. She is finalizing her summer plans and trying to choose between few options.
