African American Barbershop

I am curious; Are there any African American barbershops in Charlottesville? Believe it or not, this is very important.

Thanks.

One of our deans was adamant that you go to Jermell’s on Commerce Street. It is on the free trolley route, a short ride from the Corner. There are two barbers on that street, both with J names, so just be careful about which one you use. My colleague went so far as to recommend a specific barber, JJ. Let me know if you need phone numbers. :)

If someone recommends “J&T” on Main Street, be aware that the shop used to be Jermell’s (I remember when it was called J&T and it was always busy…now, not so much). They may not be aware that he has moved a few blocks.

For ladies, Ebony Images (near Best Buy) was recommended by a staff member who is also an alumna. It’s on the bus route (I think the #5 or the #7).

Thanks Dean J. You always give such speedy replies. Looks like I’ll be going to Jermell’s—so glad that this barbershop exists! lol.

Just be aware that if Jermell looks well-groomed, unless he can do his own hair in a tri-fold mirror, he’s likely getting his hair cut at J&T! :)

Jarmell is the “J” in “J&T”.

Jermell sold the old shop to a woman and it is now a unisex salon called Natur’el or something like that. At Jermell’s new shop, there are three barbers: Jermell, JJ, and Jay. :)

I have walked past the store front that was J&T’s for years and noticed a change in the number of people going there when it switched over. There are far fewer people there…perhaps they all moved with Jermell.

lmao! That’s a lot of Js.
