That will be a wonderful trip! There is a slang in China talking about it like:
Gui-Lin Site seeing is the most beautiful one on earth until you got to Yang-Shuo. There is river in Yang-Shuo, ride a boat to have a little cruise, my sister told me if i have a chance. But I haven’t been there.
We visited Hong-Kong last Summer and D loves that City and even dreaming on find a job there after graduate. Hong-Kong is very international, English is enough to live there. In Hong-Kong you need to tour the Victoria Bay by a ship, It is So beautiful. Better than San Francisco and New York, I think.

G-mom, you will have a great time on this trip! We are all jealous. I think I’ve been mentally drooling over Hong Kong since I saw some James Bond film as a kid that was shot there. That harbor with those tall conical mountains! As beautiful as Rio di Janiero, maybe more.

I think it’s a very good sign that your D wants to return to Mica. Keep up the pressure with getting her to work and practice being responsible in various ways. You have a great motivator there! And her desire to return suggests that she was learning and doing well aside from the executive functioning issues and other issues unrelated to her art.

@Chapman
Gmom why didn’t you come play?
now new nice moderator like Nancy Peloci taking side of the ELITE parent.
Wheaty is doing his cute stuff, the forcefully silenced kid came clean at last.
drama! drama!!!
and
CA esp LA to OC stays mystery to me…

von voyage!! eat them noodles!!no. she can’t … dung.

…I keep forgetting you are from the vicinity… so it ain’t all regional.
that’s also my kid’s OC summer friend’s mom told me. He is at some Cal state. anything else couldn’t be afforded.

Glutenmom,

You’re thinking of Pepperdine in Malibu. Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, U of San Diego and Chapman all get looked at by the same sets of kids. All 4 schools have similar backgrounds, all private and all are good universities.

It’s funny, I’ve heard may San Diego high school kids say they hate the thought of going to USD, I hear the same from OC kids about Chapman, and Malibu kids aren’t keen on Pepperdine. Go figure.

Like I said, all 4 are good schools with USN&WR ranking them: in this order Pepperdine (53rd best uni in the U.S.), USD (94th), LMU (about 120th), Chapman (about 150th).

Pepperdine is largely unknown on the East Coast but it’s a solid school (although not much of an art dept). P-dine is just starting a film studies area. Pepperdine reminds me a lot of Fordham in terms of quality of education and relative obscurity on the opposite coast.

And while I’m rambling… U of San Diego just might be the prettiest campus in the country. Gorgeous. Certainly in the top 3.

Wheaty

^ don’t we adore Wheaty?
Pepperdine sounded yummy, as pepper and dinner so I did bit of peeking- voted the best view campus or some in other thread. if anything, Fordham’s sad location and ugly -ahem be nice be nice- campus won’t attract same kinda kids who wanna do Malibu?

@Wheaty: Bingo! Pepperdine was it! My niece will get her masters from USD next semester in speech therapy. She loves it there. Her sister went to Cal State San Marcos but is now going to school in Fullerton. I have a nephew at Orange Coast College (JC), one at UC Santa Barbara, and another that just graduated from my alma mater, UC Irvine. None of them are into art. I do confess to taking several art classes as a BioSci major at UCI – but I’ve always considered my dabbles in art to be a hobby. Just noticed that a former water color painting instructor of mine (some extension classes at the local JC, not at UCI), Timothy Clark, is teaching two workshops at the Art Student League in NYC. I’m trying to convince D1 to take one of the workshops – just because it would be kind of trippy to go tell the guy that he taught my Mom many many years ago. She’s still in too much of a funk to do that at the moment though.

@Bears: When I went to school, I chose a school based pretty much on cost and what I wanted to do with my life (back then I was pre-med). My parents would NEVER EVER have gone along with my getting a degree in art. But I didn’t/don’t have a tenth of the talent D1 has – art is the right choice for her, she has the ability. Maybe for manga girl too. Who knows. Manga girl is practical though. She doesn’t want to be a starving artist and says she will do manga on the side!

Tomorrow we are going to brave the snow storm and trek down to MICA to pack up D1’s dorm. Her poor remaining room mate will have practically nothing – the microwave, dishes, pots/pans, etc are all D1s. D1 hasn’t informed her room mate that she has withdrawn from MICA yet either, which I think is very rude. But I’m not going to do it for her. The snow is an added complication that we didn’t need. But they won’t let us do it on the weekend and Monday is the only other day we can come. I wonder what they would do if we didn’t come and get her stuff… maybe we don’t want to find that out.

@ Bears,

Sure, Fordham and Pepperdine look completely opposite. I was just making the point that both are excellent academically but pretty much unknown on opposite coasts. I was just drawing the comparison for you East Coasters.

And yes, Pepper-dine does sound delicious!

@ Glutenmom,

So you’re an Anteater! ZOT!!! Have you seen UCI’s new art building? Really terrific! IMO, UCI is going to become a very important art school in the future. The UC system is committing a lot of resources toward the arts. Spending per capita art student has got to be way out of the norm at UCI. Tons of art resources for a small number of kids. It’s quite a commitment and its pretty cool to see.

Wheaty

I haven’t been to UCI in quite some time. I didn’t know they had a new art building. The art department was very very small when I went there. It’s such a nerd school now, expanding the arts is probably a very good thing. One of the things I loved about UCI was the Middle Earth themed dorms. I had to live at home and commute for $$ reasons, but i had a work study job in the infirmary and used to have to go over to ‘middle earth’ to get food for whomever was housed in the infirmary. I wonder if they still have the Wayzgoose medieval festival - I guess I could ask my nephew.

LCAD, though very small, has quite a following – and even some presence at NPD here on the east coast. Here is my confession: when we visited LCAD I saw internship postings from Blizzard Entertainment on a bulletin board. I tried my best to convince D1 that LCAD would be a great school for her to attend – just because I’d love for her to have a chance to work for Blizzard. Ok. I admit it. My secret vice is that I love World of Warcraft. My nephews think I’m cool because I have ‘toons’ that are maxed out and I love to raid. You have to be a gaming junkie to understand, lol.

Glutenmom,

It’s funny that you mention LCAD. I helped get the son of a family friend into LCAD even though he was at the time unmotivated (this is Wheaty code for “terrible stats, simple art skills, and a constant blank stare”). Here we are just 1 semester in and shock of shocks, he’s becoming an artist. He loves the place and he’s suddenly firing on all burners.

Anyone interested in LCAD should look at the students work. It’s very impressive. You are right, it’s very small (they just installed new dorms for 18 kids!) but that little school in Laguna turns out some really good artists.

Gmom, you should check out this gluten-free bakery in Baltimore - [Gluten Free Desserts :: Sweet Sin Bakery :: Baltimore, MD](http://www.glutenfreedesserts.com/)

edit post #465
BON voyage Gmom!

I got it now
I saw the word “bon appetit” and some article about “Von Trapp girl” the one I am sixteen going on seventeen, but did not have that traitor boyfriend for real-
Bon Von Bon Von Bon bon for(French) trips von for trapps…

Welcome …the more the merrier. I learn so much in this forum…a very small part about art and artschools…but also learn about lots of strange minicultures in our midsts, not to m ention exotic foods, rare books, the location of gluten-free bakeries, BandD is right that we discuss soon to be launchees, returnees, momees as well as siblings (my diva, mangagirl, etc).

The recent discussion had me completely mystified especially repeated references to the culture of OC. I finally figured it out (thank you google) but it still seems like outer space…but I will look so knowing the next time I hear references to OC, Dodge, Chapman instead of having the gaumless gaze of a gal from gainesville.

S is getting ready to return to Pittsburgh. Not surprisingly he is frantically working on his project to get rid of his I from last semester. It is a soft sculpture…BandD he could REALLY use your help. I found him huddled in his room with my sewing kit from the 1970’s (cute little box with polkadot material and lace) cursing as he tried to sew up some baby legs he had made for a cactus(?)…they were actually pretty darn good as felt baby legs go but he is a crappy seamstress (should I be glad?..years and years I tried to get him to sew on his own buttons but it takes mega bucks at CMU to get him to thread a needle)…I had seen a battery powered sewing machine at one of those “as seen on tv” stores but knew H would have blown a gasket had I given it to S as a xmas present. It is hard enough on latino H having a S who is an artist but at least it seemed to involve manly things like welding …the sudden interest in sewing has H really nervous.

Good luck G-mom and Bravegirl with the trip!

Sewing… ah, D1 took off with ALL my sewing stuff, machine included, when she first went to Mica. I didn’t know whether to be angry or relieved! I hadn’t used the machine in years, but now I have absolutely nothing to sew a button back on with. I did finally get a new pair of “good” scissors and since they’re small, she tried to take them too so she could use them to trim her bangs!

Should I be mad at my kid or worried that I’ve created a hoarder? She did actually use the stuff at school and I prefer the output she made with fabric over the rusty nail studded wood thingy she made that we put out in the shed.

fammom
I just met lovely ( maybe tooo “lovely” for famdad… wink wink) El Salvadorian who sew and groom and gift wrap and dress and pose.
his entire tribes are here in Brooklyn, taking turn eating sleeping getting jobs and laid off,
seamstress, hair stylist, driver, chef, grad student, HS kid, grandma, uncle, cousins etc.
I asked won’t that make you nuts, wanna be on his own?
he said with this twinkly puppy dog eyes
" why?"
I think I knew 20 plus years in NYC but every time I met kid like him, it tells me what it mean to be really happy and contented.
pass that dream act, year 2011!!! …and maybe easy no-fault divorce for real? thanks in advance.

@sewing machines
All these US years of home-semi industrial-industrial machine dealings, what I miss the most is Woolworth’s store brand cheepo machine that made everything I do now just the same.
the store also had bags of poly-fill, thread and needle, flashy ribbons and such, was across from Macy’s Herald sq. and one near Lincoln center.
you don’t know how valuable ( yet cheeeseeeyyy) something is until it’s gone for good.
love your inner cheese. It won’t last forever.

I like this thread a lot too.

LoveB- has your D said anything about report cards? My S is checking email everyday, but sometimes I think he is not practical enough to know if that is how they will be sent.

Lets see, in other news, I am grouchy that my kid is spending so much time with friends, but happy that he has nice friends. His BFF (who he sees in NYC all the time too) took him for a run yesterday, I hope this becomes a NYC habit. My S actually had the makings of decent long distance (xcounty) runner in 9th/10th grade, he was fast enough for varsity, and oddly disciplined about the ridiculously grueling practices (7 miles, just for kicks) But that went away. Sigh.

I just found out that over the course of last semester he composed/recorded a couple of “albums” of music. Think Tom Waits (punk era) meets Hank Williams…I wish I got to hear about the cool stuff, and not just the drama.

MOVIE RECOMMENDATION- MUST SEE FOR US ART MOMMIES/KIDS
