bears here
can’t see the video till later… cute boys wagwagwag drip drop drool
fammom check out cooper thread!
switters’ lovely H lead us to see the statistician- turned sculptor’s gallery. maybe something famkid would do.

I love that young Bob Dylan shaped boy. can he sing, too?
I love the fact famkid send you/share his work to you (so we all can see, heheheh)
what is the “creep” in this definition?

Hey…glad it was a hit. I only know the dancer with glasses (S’s roommate) and I assume the main dancer is from the same hip hop dance group. My S’s role was entirely behind the scenes with the exception of the dinosaur mask and also I think I recognized a shirt in one of the piles of clothes in the laundry room.

I don’t know if the guys sing. The roomate/glasses kid is very quiet and I would have described him as a geeky guy who loves all things computer and technical. I was very surprised when I found out he is such a good dancer.

I have no idea what creep is and haven’t spoken to S who is toooo busy with his job and classes to answer questions. The music is kind of catchy.

On facebook last night I saw that S had posted a picture of himself “monitoring his a** off” in the welding room. I was pleased to see that he has taken his job seriously, showed up to work and seemed to be keeping the entire empty room and himself safe, if bored. The fact that he went looking for a job, got it and showed up without an iota of parental input shows how far he has grown up in just a couple of months. It looks very boring right now until classes really get going. I texted him a reminder to use the work/down time wisely…like calling grandparents for their 50th wedding anniversary this week.

fammom- great video and I love that dinosaur mask! Tell your S to keep up the good work.

We just brought D2 back to school on Sunday. She was OK, but called later feeling a bit lonely after unpacking. Her roomies weren’t back yet. Now that classes have started, she sounds a bit better. Oh, these sensitive types - so easy to feel a bit melancholy in the dreary January weather. I’m ready for spring, or at least February.

Did anyone know: what kind of report we can ask from college for tax purpose? Asked my friend and his D’s school parent and he said the school will send them a report say they paid 52000 - scholarship as tuition … (the whole cost is 52000$)
He said each school is different, is there a report name we can try to call and ask the school?

The college should send you what’s called a 1098-T, Tuition Statement. You shouldn’t have to ask for it; it should be sent automatically. Don’t expect to see it until much closer to the end of January/beginning of February; I believe schools have until January 31st to mail (much like employers have until then to send their W-2’s out).

It will detail amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses as well as scholarships or grants provided.

We just got a statement from our 529 holder with what they disbursed, but nothing from the school yet. Does anyone know how the education credit works? We have an accountant do our taxes, but would be interesting to know.

We used the American Opportunity Credit last year. There’s a worksheet to determine the amount.

For this credit, the first $2,000 of qualified expenses actually paid out (either out of pocket or with loan proceeds) is dollar-for-dollar tax credit. You can add 25% of the next $2,000 in qualified expenses to that amount (maximum $500) for a total credit of $2,500.

Based on last year’s forms, the credit was available to married couples with an AGI less than $180,000.

Famm - great video, I posted it on my facebook page.

I have been sooo outed as a cc lurker/participant! My son’s roomate (the dancer with the glasses) checked to see who was looking at the video and he found the trail to 16 views by cc people and looked at t he thread…they called last night asking what the H** (please see thread above…oh boy BandD you made their day!!!). They had to google Dylan when he was young to see why you said that! Anyway, my son did not know my cc habit but seems ok with it…roomate says his mom is on here too sometimes. They took it very well and want to get as many views as possible so feel free to post it where-ever. Still…I am outed…should I get a new name?

Greetings from Hong Kong. I’m here with D1 for business for four days, then we’ll head over to mainland China and do a tour starting in Guilin. The flight was brutally long, I was done after four hours… but still had another twelve to go. D1 was parked in the back in economy class. She seems to have made it through the ordeal just fine. I supressed all my maternal instincts and did not ask the stewardess if my daughter in the back got the special gluten free meals or not… I didn’t even send her a note (though the thought crossed my mind). The powers that be at the airline allowed her to accompany me through the business class check in and then go to the lounge before our flight. She really likes that luxury treatment, lol.

We’re checked into the hotel, it’s about 4:30 Monday afternoon and I’m happy to say that she is sitting there at the window with her paints out painting away. Awesome. I hope she does lots of art on this trip – and gets out and demonstrates some independence.

I’ll check back in a couple of days. I need some sleep!

FAMMoM, you are probably not the only one who’s ‘outed’, lol.

As you’ve probably seen, my D not only lurks, but uses my account to post - so I’m WAY outed!!

famm and redbug: my D knows I am into CC also. She is fine with it …
What do you mean by saying “outed”, sorry, my English is poor.
Gmom: Just realize you will hit the biggest peak of transportation in China. It is near their new Year, new year day is 2/3 and hopefully you can survive!

Love: Outed means something coming to light that was hidden previously. Like when gay/lesbian folks talk about being “outed”. It means that previously they kept their sexual orientation private, and if they are “outed”, this information is now public knowledge. Related to coming “out” of the closet. It often has a negative connotation to it when the individual wants their private life kept private, and someone “outs” them to be mean spririted.

bear here

Gmom - how is your jet lag doing? I love the image of your daughter looking out the window and painting the scene of Hong Kong. What kind of paints did she manage to fly with?

Bleh, stupid CC lost my post. Jet lag is going ok. D1 has yet to leave the hotel. I so wanted to take a picture of her when she was sitting in the window painting but it would have ****ed her off. She raided my watercolor supplies plus brought Inktense colored pencils, micron pens, graphite pencils… don’t know what else. Right before we left she requested a trip to the dreaded art supply store so she could ‘get some stuff to bring along’ but I think she just bought some short handled brushes.

Today she is supposed to join a co-worker’s wife and go shopping in the Central district and maybe visit that Gagosian gallery exhibit that Bears had a link to. Drat, i wanted to do that too. But I have meetings all day and a dinner tonight. No real fun until tomorrow afternoon.

The weather is mild but they seem to have a Hong Kong version of Southern California ‘June Gloom’, where the day is mostly grey and cloudy and late in the afternoon there’s a little weak hazy sunshine. Too bad because I know in Guilin it will be much chillier (but still warmer than home).

Yes the travel is going to be crazy with the big Chinese holiday. I would have stayed a day longer if I had realized the third is the New Year. That’s the day we fly home.

I like the idea that we are vicariously traveling through G-Mom’s posts…excellent description of weather…it was like that on the coast of Ecuador too…the hazy gloom… is this a Pacific thing? .please include description of foods…I am only familiar with American and Ecuadorean “chinese” cuisine. I just made such a dinner which consists of me seeing what is in fridge, chopping a lot and putting 5 spice powder and soy sauce and calling it “comida china” which in Spanish covers all asian food–vietnamese, sushi, etc… Just like, in Ecuador, anyone looking even vaguely East Asian is called “chinito” (little chinaman) even if they are from Korea, Japan or even Bolivia. Fujimori of Peru was generally referred to as El Chino in Ecuador.

I think she left the hotel!!! Hurray!
I am trying to be patient and all that. Today the sun seems to be coming out earlier, I’m stuck in the back of the hotel ballroom staring out the window at the blue sky… wishing I was out roaming the city instead of sitting here looking interested (I went through all these same presentations in Barcelona a couple of months ago, so it’s kind of boring – different group of doctors, but same scientific/medical information). If I thought I could get away with it, I’d sneak off. But they’d probably notice. Plus if somebody has a question about ‘my stuff’ I have to be here to answer it. But my presentation is the very last of the day so I don’t think there will be any questions.

The food… we’ve been so far limited to the hotel. Dinner last night was a buffet with an assortment of different Asian cuisines. There was sashimi, some Thai things, Drunken chicken, some sort of tofu soup stuff, plain old regular salad with thousand island dressing (lol), pork cutlets with cream sauce, um… a carving station with beef… linguine… I think none of it was particularly memorable or necessarily authentic. At the morning break this morning they had little coaster sized plates with one french fry (chip) and a tiny piece of fried fish (English fish and chips) and the same teeny plate with a quarter of an english muffin on it with melted cheese over ham. The plates were all different shapes and colors, so it was interesting to look at.

Tonight we are going to the ‘JUMBO’ floating restaurant for dinner. I wonder how genuine that cuisine will be.

There is another celiac here at the meeting, she was happy when I went upstairs and raided D1’s gf soy sauce supply so she could enjoy the wasabi with her sashimi. I was pleased to see that they have little cards identifying the dishes and noted which were gluten free (however D1 is not invited to any company functions, so she misses out). She does accompany me to breakfast and has been having an omelette every morning along with fruit. she isn’t eating much else. We brought along protein bars and some gluten free snacks so she has been into that stash.

I’m curious to find out how she fared today, and I hope she and the lady went on the tram up to the top of Victoria Peak since the weather looks so beautiful today.

OK, I give up - exactly what is Drunken Chicken???
