After the launch

This is going into my book of classic Bears comments
“Gmom can of worms are good, that’s what I live on, like occasional Chef Boyedee’s spaghetti”
Gmom, believe me, I didn’t for one moment think this was the norm around the Gmom place and Bears for your info I did quite nicely in NYC thank you and my “other” coast friends think I have a rather biting sense of humor (a la NY) So though I do have a sense of humor there are just a few places where I do draw a line, and then even step over it sometimes. But the language in this site was kindof waaaaay too far over any of my lines. And there was just so much of it but then I didn’t even know about these “sites”.

OH my I missed this one, this goes into the priceless comments by Switters section.
“I read some of the lyrics and burst into tears.”

Back in the day… we used to monitor the lyrics to all D1’s songs and if we didn’t like them, she couldn’t get the song. She was so itchy for an iPod back when they first came out. She must have been in 7th or 8th grade. Half the songs she asked for would get big NO’s written by them. Since she was struggling with severe depression, we really didn’t want her listening to such dark lyrics. I think back then she liked Evanescence… which seems so innocent now. I remember songs like Tourniquet and Going Under and worse. As she got older we had to scale back our control of what she wanted to listen too, eventually giving up on the whole lyrics-monitoring thing. She was never allowed to have internet access to her laptop in her bedroom until she turned 18. Now that she’s 18 we don’t monitor what she does on the internet anymore either.
Back in the day… 8th grade maybe… when MySpace was bigger than it is now, she secretly created a MySpace account portraying herself as 18 (instead of 13) and being ‘interested in men’. She was also dumb enough to put in personal information like our address… she didn’t have it for long before we found out about it and canned it. She created another one behind our backs and this time put that she was from Zimbabwe… which was better… but it was still behind our backs so she had internet access cut off for a long long time. She negotiated with us later on to have MySpace and FaceBook accounts… but only with the caveat that we had her log in information and that we would monitor what she posted – though we would post nothing ourselves. So for the next couple of years we kept an eye on her social computing. But we don’t do that any longer with her. We monitor Manga girl pretty regularly – aspie girl doesn’t quite get the whole social computing thing, so she doesn’t really do much with it and I think she’s not inclined to go to horrible websites. Manga girl loves Deviant art, so I’m sure she gets plenty of eyefulls there. But she has a good head on her shoulders.
Anyway, we were laughing at the 'Hipsters are elusive creatures who will never admit to being hipster…'and didn’t take the ■■■ references as necessarily being derogatory.
D1 has displayed an aberrant interest in weird conspiracy theory baloney and The Codex Seraphinianus – but I suspect teenage girls do strange things. I remember being totally absorbed by the mystery of whatever became of Amelia Earhart when I was about her age.

One of my most secret gluten vices is Spaghetti-os, especially when I’m feeling under the weather – that and Campbell’s chicken noodle soup – but either they changed the recipe (reduced the salt??) or I’m getting so old now that my taste buds have changed because the soup just doesn’t taste as good to me as it used to.

I think it’s less salt.
Oh my, the 18 years (instead of 13) and “interested in men” had me until I read about the home address. We got a cold hard lesson early on when an extremely popular teacher was busted for internet bad stuff. . . like trying to meet young girls who were “interested in men.” So while not the way I would have chosen to get the message across it made the be careful on the internet cautions a lot easier as the school had professionals coming in forever to talk to the kids. They actually handled it very well. But my kid still won’t do facebook to this day.

And yes, I agree, the moment you even smell like you want to be regarded as a hipster you will never be one.

My D warned me about 4chan and told me to not go there. We are pretty liberal minded in our house, and the “f” word comes out of my mouth occasionally always in anger. There are a few co-workers that have no problem using the “n” word and I am always shocked at that. D has a roommate who posts combos of the “f” word on her Facebook and I’m wondering at one point she’ll figure out potential employers are now using social networking sites as part of the interview process.

Swit: My D and her boyfriend are the same combo as your S and his GF. Her BF is the common sense, down to earth one. She calls him “her voice of reason”.

Helloooo People!!!
Bears just wrote to me and I had to check in. I see you have been wracking up the posts and I wish I could read it all but work guilt will not let me right now. I miss you all. Our move was very rocky and I got deep into renovations, painting etc. Then our exchange girl from Berlin arrived and teenage madness ensued (sex, drugs and lying woohooo!!!) and then…two major floods to our basement. Husbands paintings and rare art books were affected and tears were shed. Now our little yard is a huge hole and foundation issues are being addressed. S1 at RISD is doing great. He gifted us with a whole new set of pottery bowls, mugs, cups and a sake set after wintersession. He has just officially declared Industrial Design as his major and is still with the high school GF who transferred out of Parsons into Fordham but wants to transfer again to Carnegie (hi fammom). He also just told me there is a housing crunch at RISD and by the time he got to choose a room for next year there was not much left…so he will be in some graduate housing off campus with no cafeteria nearby. I was not happy but my mom said get over it…he’ll be nineteen and will be fine. When I was that age I was living in the East Village in a decrepit sublet with my boyfriend. Boy my perspective has changed. S2 is getting into photography but got his camera taken away at school and a teacher found racy pictures of some of his classmates on it…not full on nudity but they are playing with the boundry. He sure has a tendency for doing things and getting caught. It was good to find out to be able to talk. But I hate getting those calls.

What was the test you all were taking? I want to take it.

oh and controversy is brewing at RISD. The faculty voted “no confidence” in John Maeda and the administration. They see things becoming to focused on $ and marketing and the integrity of the education itself being put at risk. I am trying to follow along but there is not much info to gather.

mamabear!!!
am I glad I bugged you.
here is the test , how millennial are you? provided by loveblue.
(un)champ is lurker with two live mules, second place goes to smarty.
http://pewresearch.org/millennials/quiz/</a>
here is mine, your whiteness test, I am the most white (LOL) with 142, vast majority scoring on 27 or cheating, heheheh

whaaattt? anpan man failed? or was he a curry pan man, I can’t remember.
would he be booted out or what?
there goes one of worried_mom’s precious bragging right list.

D got home Wednesday and start to have fever in the night. It is magic, her temperature get back normal last night! I don’t need to worry about her flight back next Monday.

Glutemom: Hope your D1 can get back to her energy soon :–)
greenwitch: Craft Central looks fun but Hetty Rose maybe no, too expensive, but really cute!
Bears: Thanks for the “Curatorial program” information, it looks like is a hard one to get in.
Drae: So good to see your post! do you find a nice summer program for your S1 in Italy this summer?

So many posts about “words”… i am very slow on that and never care about what words D used. She is so quite and shy, that makes things easier, but I don’t know what she was really on in the internet world in her high school time. Like now I don’t know what kind of books she is reading. it is not like she keeps away from me, the books are there but I don’t have time to read it. English is still hard for me.

D brought back a whole bag of books home. She want to make her belongs as light as possible since she needs to move out from the dorm May 12th. I am happy to see at least she is planning on moving out now. Hope she and her roommates can find a nice apartment near by Cooper. Good News is her roommates’s parents want them to find a place near Cooper like me now!

love
if there is an only parent in the universe who doesn’t have to worry about those kids’ words or actions it would be you.
books!!!
oh oh can I brag about somethin’?
my kid was assigned to read at his class “Dora an analysis of blah blah” by Freud. they got enuff fund to give copies away for keeps and he personalized its cover with adding immaculate crosshatchings on Freud’s portrait along with really nice drawing of pe*nis next to him.
I thought that is how the cover design was done and gaped at, then realized is was his handy work.
I’d post it if I could in “portfolio” thread! it is so far the very best technical drawing he ever done.
and no, I never got call from the school. the phone would be ringing letters sent if he’d done the same in 7th grade. that’s what I am sayin’
book itself looks suspiciously new. doubt if it ever even opened…

Maeda and staff address the communication gap: [The All-Nighter Bridging the Communication Gap](http://all-nighter.com/news/bridging-the-communication-gap/)

I am a 90. More Millenial than Millenials??? But I am Gen X!! hey, I met Kurt Cobain back in the day. I guess it is because we are so digital with our business being what it is.

As for whiteness I am 55%. I can’t stand Sarah Silverman and I don’t really like beards. We use a derogatory word for those guys…beardos. Is that on the word list?

loveblue…no summer program, he’s working on getting an internship with an artist in Williamsburg (very white of him:)) Look, you are happy your daughter will be in an apartment, cooking for herself and all. I will keep the faith.

drae
met?
Kurt?
what have you done to him? or didn’t do to him?
you coulda saved him. sob sob sob sob sob sob sob
yet
I donno if I wanted to see him in 40s. just the thought.
aghhh nothing done with all this lurking around. aw so much fun!!

You know I have to say that this hasn’t been my happiest week ever but you all just keep putting up these posts that just ring with been there done that and it sure is cheering me up. Drae, a very famous photographer went to my kid’s last school and came just thiiiiiiiiis close to getting booted right before graduation for some photos. So don’t worry, maybe it’s a sign of great things to come.

Speaking of hipsters (I’ve been out of things for a while…), D2 definitely relates to them/herself. She asked for two books on her Xmas list - “Look at this *****ing hipster” and “Stuff hipsters hate - a field guide to the passionate opinions of the disinterested”. We ended up getting them both and we all laughed a lot. She would agree with G-mom’s D that there are many at Mica.

Bears, I love your son’s Freud story! Now there’s a drawing that any young male will not procrastinate on! My D3 had to do a biography of Freud, she had been sick and everyone else was taken. She had never heard of him (this was 8th grade) and quickly heard all the dirt. Part of the project involved the students dressing up and acting like their subject - and this is the shyest, least stage-happy kid! Well, she put on a fake beard, got out the posterboard, and had a therapy session in front of the class with a willing victim.

“Doctor, my corset always feels tight and I just feel like I need to go out and run with the wolves or something”

“Well dear, it sounds like you have ***** envy” and D3 checked off ***** envy on her chart and soon had oedipul fixation, oral fixation and everything else checked off. I heard the rest of the class was fascinated! It’s a good thing there were no drawings involved.

Bears, you are clearly more skilled than I at getting things through the censors!

Drae - I’m impressed with your stats. I blame my bad millenial score on my hatred of all things phone related. If they had a question - “going to what store, to you, is like entering the outer circle of hell?”, I would answer “the Sprint store” with no hesitation!

funny hipster story- the kids came back from camping and in addition to gf and my S one of the other kids stayed with us for a night before getting a bus to NYC today. So my S’s bestie lives in brooklyn, but was here this week too, his folks are from here. All three of the boys I mentioned were wearing skinny jeans and flannel shirts. Its like they called each other before getting dressed. I kind of need to mention in his defense that my S has always dressed like this, even pre-hipster.

found he Freud book
[Amazon.com: Dora: An Analysis of a Case of Hysteria (Collected Papers of Sigmund Freud) (9780684829463): Sigmund Freud, Philip Rieff: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Dora-Analysis-Hysteria-Collected-Sigmund/dp/0684829460/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300493452&sr=1-1-spell)
pe*nis is in the blue area facing left, about same size as his ears, facing up and angled just so as if having conversation/ analysis session with his right ear.
G
stick * in anywhere in between letters seems work the best.
I mean been bad and muzzled every so often I’d be better good at it, no?

switters
thing is, you can’t wear skinny pants if you ain’t skinny. it is prerequisite of hipsterdom.
cherish those bony a*ss while it last, kiddies.

see that, G?
easy easy.

MCAD is having their first Parents Day, where parents get to take classes similar to the students. You had a choice of 1 of 4 classes in the am and 1 of 4 after lunch, with your S/D joining you for lunch in the cafeteria. Decided to go (even tho I’ll probably freeze - April in Minnesota can still be cold!), and am signed up for History of Animation and Monotype (which I had to look up). So it should be fun!
